Which breaks quake2, because when I launch quake via XQF, I just get a black screen and have to reboot. Best way to carve up a 40 gig drive

Thanks to the help on this list I now have my Maxtor 40 gig drive on as a slave. I plan on copying all the cds to the hard drive and do a hard drive installation ( much faster than my old 2 speed cdrom). I orginally planned on 2 partitians on the extra drive, one primary at 1000 cylinders and a secondary with the remaining 3982 cylinders. Orginally I was only planning to use the 40 gig drive for only for storage, but now I am thinking I may be able to install SuSE 7.0 on the first partition after I copy the contents of all the cds to the extended partition. Will this work or is there a better way to do it, I would like to keep SuSe 6.3 on my primary drive, and install SuSE 7.0 on the slave if possible ( using a boot manager which is already installed) rather than overwriting my SuSE 6.3 install that works well ( hate to fix something that works but do want to see the latest from SuSE). Any suggestions? So far I have not done anything to the slave drive other than format it, now is the time to change the partitions befroe I install anything on it. thanks in advance, joe

VMware and SuSE 7.0 ???

Greetings, I just dumped my /dev/hda1 with MS98 on it to use VMware, since Win4Lin doesn't support SuSE 7.0. The most nagging thing is that VMware doesn't pick up on my config correctly ? I see this error when trying to run /usr/sbin/vmware-config.pl ------------------------------------------------------------------- Trying to find a suitable vmmon module for your running kernel. None of VMware's pre-built vmmon modules is suitable for your running kernel. Do you want this script to try to build the vmmon module for your system (you need to have a C compiler installed on your system)? [yes] What is the location of the directory of C header files that match your running kernel? Howdy folks. I just made the move from mandrake to suse. I'm using the evaluation version of 7.0 and I have quite a few questions. 1. LILO. This is a dualboot machine on a 17 gig HD. My linux partitions are all beyond the 1024 cylinder. I downloaded the update to LILO from the suse updates site and ran it. I configured LILO with /etc/lilo.conf (adding the new kernel I just compiled) and then ran LILO as root. Warning: device 0x0306 exceeds 1024 cylinder limit. Use of the 'lba32' option may help on newer (EDD BIOS) systems. Fatal: geo_comp_addr: Cylinder number is too big (1082 > 1023) I tried lilo -L root@ilinisa:/home/abe > lilo -L Added abe * Added linux Added suse Added windows root@ilinisa:/home/abe > looks good right? No lilo at reboot. Have to boot from a floppy. Anybody got an idea? I'm using lilo.21.6-9.i386.rpm 2. DAMN! Suse is fast! Mandrake is i586 compiled and it is damn slow in comparison. Very pleasant surprise. 3. Two X server questions. I've got a Voodoo5 in one machine and an Asus V7700 in another. The V5 is in the machine I installed suse in first. Anybody have X 4.02 or 4.01 working with hardware acceleration? Gotta have quake3 in linux ;-) I've got x 4.01 (downloaded from the suse updates site) working for 2d but, well here's the important log excerpt: (EE) TDFX(0): TDFXDRIScreenInit failed (libdri.a too old) huh? The X4.01 files are dated september 14, 2000. Any ideas? Everything else loads just fine. In regards to the V7700 GeForce2 card. Anybody have that going and how does it work? 4. Uhhh, gnome just plain doesn't work. Everything sigfaults. gedit isn't installed, gmc isn't installed. suse doesn't like gnome? I use windowmaker but I like some of the gnome apps. 5. I downloaded the kde 2.01 updates and it works great except I can't run konqueror in any windowmanager except kde2. Probably a path thing huh? 6. I have a microsoft intellimouse optical USB. It worked until the reboot during setup. I tried enabling legacy USB support in my BIOS (asus a7v board) the usb ports are detected then but the mouse is still a no go. I'm using it on the ps/2 port for now but I really want to get it back on USB. higher sample rate = better accuracy in CS/Q3/UT. Thanks for your help everybody! Hello All, Am building firewall box up out of old parts, however having difficulty finding a supported PCI video card for X. I don't have an AGP slot on this old box. I have three different PCI video cards, however cannot get any of them up and operational in X. Here are the cards and problems associated with each. Card Type Problem ======================|====================================================== Diamond | Setup OK with sax. However unreadable fonts in X. Stealth 64 (2 MByte) | Graphics OK. All text is unreadable including pop-up | menus and task bars. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Matrox | Not recognized by sax. I don't have any of the specs MGA-IMP+/P4 (2 MByte?)| on this card so cannot manually set it up with | XF86Setup or xf86config. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Matrox | Not recognized by sax. I don't have any of the specs MGA-PCI/2 (2 MByte?) | on this card so cannot manually set it up with | XF86Setup or xf86config. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- If these cards are not support I can purchase a inexpensive PCI video card that I can use sax to set up, as I have had no luck with the low level XF86Setup or xf86config utilities (Sorry not a graphics card EE). hd light always on

Hi everyone, Ive just installed suse 6.4 on a halfway decent machine and everything went well, only problem is my hd light is always on! Ive got Linux on a 3 g partition with 100m swap 98 m ram I've never seen the light on that machine stay on, it donst "sound" like there is any activity... but it makes me nervous. If I look on the performance mon in K all processes seem to be fine. thanks rob
