I really like KDE1, one of the things I really miss in KDE2 is all of the handy keyboard shortcuts available in KDE1, and in KDE2 I'm not able to configure the keyboard layouts for the languages I need to either. I don't know what i changed in my rc.config - now i can't load SuSE Help system or support database (Netscape unable to find a file or directory... - i have all on disk). And another problem is an error where starting linux: Starting service httpd syntax error in httpd.conf. All errors starting today. I don't know what i changed. I installed Gimp 1.2 without problems and it working but... Please help me. Mitja

Yo, Ben! I've been following these discussions with great interest (it's been quite fun actually...:-), some of what's been said is both right and wise but a lot of it is also just total crap (but funny). But in such a long thread like this one someone has started believing that someones 'question' actually was a 'statement' and grown out to become a fact! No one has (yet) actually stated that YaST1 will be dumped. Symptom: Hypothesis <= speculation <= fact <= (hysteria?) Strange rpm behaviour/python 2.0

Downloaded the python 2.0 rpms from ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/contrib/i386/madefor70/python/. When I try to install them almost all of my ram (160 MB) and all my swap (2*200MB) is used gradually. This happens regardeless if I try to install with YAST1 (bless her!) or with rpm from the command line. I've tried to use both rpm 3.04 and rpm 3.05 but with no success.

I know this is linux talk however I know some of you folks out there are screwing with THE KING OS too! I just fire up a Kt7 raid w/3 seagate barracudas ide drives 512sdram pc133 1.1gig ad4 ad6 ad7 are raided w/0 and on fire with ata100 highpoint 370's geforce2 ultra and sblive........oh don't forget cutting the video with 90 gigs of drive and bt848 with video........everything works after a 15 minute pile of the stack................. fired up MAC OS X on a dual 450.............needs a few more drivers but BSD has come a very long way this past few months................. 5.0 out this summer promises lots on the toy department............. Don't put BSD off at all, mac user will account for almost as many if not more than linux in the competition on windows................. Laters fellow hackers......... CrackRipper

For any serious office work text editors (emacs, vi, etc) are just to plain archaic to even be considered for html authoring, unless the boss wants to hire a computer science graduate for the office - not likely. Besides, they suck in essential features - they offer zero site management (i.e. keeping common elements on all pages without using frames). bluefish looks very nice, but is a text editor with a lot of sugar in the html department (and then it doesn't even do syntax highlighting?). Don't suggest it to your boss unless you want to make a fool out of yourself (or have successfully convinced the boss that command line is better afterall). Luckily, there is no front page extended crap for linux. I have tried IBM's home page builder (hpbuilder), and it works extremely well with XFree 3.x, it's fast too. Support for javascript but not php. You can switch instantly between coloured html text view and graphics view, any change in one will be reflected in the other. Offers site management (though I haven't tried it), and a large library of visual junk to include on your site. Includes an animated gif editor. It's linked against a special version of wine (which you can download from somewhere), therefore looks precisely like Billyware (your $HOME becomes C:\). It's cheap. The downside is that it currently has minor problems with the menus under XFree 4. IBM says it won't run, but you can always demo it yourself for 30 days. http://www-4.ibm.com/software/webservers/hpbuilder/linux/download.html Still, a native app would be nicer... Volker

Well. I have two reactions to this. Firstly I think it may be a huge amount of work, and probably bothersome work, because yast does look after most of the dependencies for you. You should consider rc.config as being the cornerstone here - an the sub-scripts (so to speak) that it calls. In principle this is good system, certainly better than linuxconf, which is a real nightmare. I would be worried that you would be chasing your tail so-to-speak for quite a while. But if you have the time. My second reactions (I have asked Suse for an official statement on Yast1 but they are unlikely to give one) - is that if you do a good job of it and package the stuff together a bit you may become famous and all the pissed-off Suse people will knock at your door :) Personally I think my days using Suse are numbered anyway, the direction they are going in, and their complete lack of interest in their small-time users is starting to grate on me. They never listen or respond to suggestions or criticism. They are just trying to out-redhat redhat now. Ah well. Shame really, it is a pretty neat distribution. Good luck with your venture ! KDE 2.0.1 Problem

Hi all, Just upgraded my home box to 7.0 and I downloaded kde 2.0.1 from the SuSE site and installed it. When I tried to run it, I got a fail-safe screen and the following message in .X.err: ksplash: error in loading shared libraries: /opt/kde2/lib/libkdeui.so.3: undefined symbol: minimumSizeHint__C7QDialog kdeinit: error in loading shared libraries: /opt/kde2/lib/libkdecore.so.3: undefined symbol: startsWith__C7QStringRC7QString knotify: error in loading shared libraries: /opt/kde2/lib/libkdeui.so.3: undefined symbol: minimumSizeHint__C7QDialog ktip: error in loading shared libraries: /opt/kde2/lib/libkdeui.so.3: undefined symbol: event__9QLineEditP6QEvent Session management error: networkIdsList argument is NULL ksmserver: error in loading shared libraries: /opt/kde2/lib/libkdecore.so.3: undefined symbol: new_metaaccess__11QMetaObjecti The box is running XFree 4.0.2 (which kicks butt, BTW), Qt 2.2.3, and has never had any other version of kde on it.
