How cool is this. ?? I can see a future in which i dont have to use WinBloze for work or play. Currently i use delphi to program if i want to. If i went for a programming job, delphi is what i'd want to program in from choice. dids. KDE2 vs Gnome

I spent the day on this old beast with Helix Gnome. There's been some nice work done with it, and as I mentioned in an earlier post, playing MP3's WORKS much better with the Gnome app. than with FreeAmp or anything else on KDE2, which seg. faults. :) I expect that Gnome will, and should eventually become as fine a well polished app. that KDE2 is, but it's NOT there yet. That said, I still think that SuSE should include it on 7.1. The install is TOTALLY painless over the Net. What ISN'T in Gnome that should be, is the various term. support at console. The Gnome term. is totally worthless when accessing via telnet to a server, like an RS6000 with AIX. Mouse movement isn't anywhere as smooth as in KDE2, and stretching any window in any direction is a bit of a hassle, as it frequently doesn't want to work properly. These are just a few of the many annoyances I found in Gnome, but then, nothing is perfect. :) Gnome deserves our support, because Linux is in part about choices, and we must always insure that we have them. The only reason I boot to 'Bloze now mostly is Quicken or TurboTax, although I'm using GNUCash for the most part instead of Quicken. There really isn't any other reason for me to use 'Bloze. printer permissions

Hi everyone. I think this is easy but I can't figure it out. I have a Lexmark z32 printer with the (excellent) driver from Lexmark installed. The paper choice/resolution etc is controlled by the program /usr/local/lexmark/z32/lexmarkz32 This program writes to a file at /var/spool/lexmark/z32.conf. My Question: root can write to this file from the above program and the resolution etc is changed accordingly. Try as I may, I cannot get myself as a normal user to be able to do the same thing. I have given the file global rw permissions but it remains at the settings I last used as set by root. Could it be something to do with the file's permissions in /usr/local? Or the /lexmark directory in /var/spool? Thanks, Steve. -- SuSE Linux 7.0

Hybrid of X3 and X4....

Are they gonna do another mix of Xfree 3.3.6 and Xfree 4 (hopefully Xfree 4.0.2)? That was the only thing that made me mad about 7, really got anoyed by that, but I just ripped it out and put Xfree4.0.2 on it, but it would be great to see them do 4.0.2 standalone and if they still need 3, do it as a seperate option. Red Hat seems to think this is a nice feature, I find it anoying.... any other thoughts? Andy

gateway security

Hi I would like to make our mail server/masquerading gateway more secure while still being able to log in remotely (using ssh I presume?) for admin purposes. It is also running Webmin. What is the best way to do this? The internet connection is only a dial-up ISDN, but the gateway can be connected for several hours at a time, and I am concerned about possible attacks.
