I switched to it by letting Ximian (formerly helixcode) Gnome switch it for me during the installation process:
However after I did that I couldn't choose any other type of desktop manager (besides failsafe and gnome). Then after I rebooted it told me that the gdm directory wasn't owned by the correct group. It's group was set to "shadow". And after I reboot again the gdm directory is reowned by shadow group. I gave up and started using kdm (login manager) against my will.

Putting the following line in /etc/permissions.local and running /sbin/SuSEconfig should set the correct permissions on gdm: /var/lib/gdm gdm.gdm 0750 Good luck, -jrh
