Hi Alex, The Abit KT7-RAID motherboard uses the Highpoint 370 chipset which is ATA/100 (which you refer to in your mail). It appears that Highpoint already have a patch available for Linux (only works with 2.2.16 kernel), so what would be useful would be if SuSE could produce a boot disk with the kernel already patched. I haven't tried the patch yet as I am awaiting delivery of SuSE 7.0. Boot from SuSE 7.0 cdrom. Default Yast2 will be start.Press <Abort installation> button and and after this on the screen will apear the Yast1. Go to <System information> button and choose <PCI>.There you will find something like this ( my case ) : Bus 0, device 17, function 0: Unknown mass storage controller: Promise Technology Unknown device (rev 2). Vendor id=105a. Device id=d30. Medium devsel. IRQ 10. Master Capable. Latency=32. I/O at 0x8800 [0x8801]. (a) I/O at 0x8400 [0x8401]. (b) I/O at 0x8000 [0x8001]. (c) I/O at 0x7800 [0x7801]. (d) I/O at 0x7400 [0x7401]. (e) Than you can reboot the system again and the pass to the LILO prompt this information : "ide2=a,b+2 ide3=c,d+2" as a command line parameter to the kernel. If you have just one HDD then pass just the line with ide2. The kernel will see the HDD like 'hde'. Than you can acces this drive. [SLE] syslogd and cpu usage

Hi all, I'm still kinda new to linux so here's a newbish question: I put setiathome on the system and run 'top' to keep an eye on whether seti is running or not. I noticed that when it isn't that syslogd seems to take up 70-90% of the cpu usage and the hard disk drive light on the box flashes like mad. Is this sort of thing normal? When seti is running then syslogd drops to aroung 40%. [SLE] At my wits end

I wrote to this list once about my problems getting SuSE 6.4 Evaluation working. Installation goes fine. After rebooting, the computer locks up when my Promise Ultra66 is probed for it's IRQ (i'm assuming, it happens after getting addresses and IRQs for IDE 0 and 1.) I tried the following: -chose the "support for many EIDE controllers" kernel in Yast -downloaded and installed 2.2.16 version of the EIDE kernel from suse ftp -compiled a 2.4.0-test8 kernel (kernel panic, could not mount my root FS) -compiled a 2.2.17 kernel with Andre Hedrick's IDE backport from http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/people/hedrick/ -pulled all other PCI cards, tried Promise in other slots -installed kernel from boot floppy -passing parameters to the kernel from LILO, which I read about at http://www.linuxnewbie.org/nhf/intel/hardware/udma66.html ...none of which fixed the problem. If I boot from the boot floppy and "Start Installed System" from there, I can use my installation (though USB mouse ceases to work, odd.) If I pull the Promise card, the hd boots fine. I've also tried changing just about everything in the BIOS, thinking maybe something was wrong there. My Abit BF6 motherboard and Promise card both have the latest BIOS versions (BEHUH and 2.00build18, respectively.) The drive i'm installing Linux on is an IBM DTTA-371010, which is hda (primary master on motherboard.) I'm ready to give up on Linux here, I can't for the life of me figure out why I can boot from the boot floppy or CD just fine, but that same kernel won't work from the HD. [SLE] Path in terminal emulators?

How do I get the KDE, Gnome, and Xterm terminal emulators to show the current path like the command line does? I'm using SuSE 6.3. Hello Linux folkz, Yesterday at work I was installing SuSE 7.0 on Athlon socket 7 ABIT MB based PCs. What I noticed that on these boards were two pair of connectors: Primary and secondary ATA/100 and primary and secondary IDE/66. These motherboards have an additional BIOS ATA/100 which recognizes devices connected to ATA/100 connectors. When I tried to install Linux on these computers, setup couldn't find hard drives connected to ATA/100 connectors even previously installed Win NT worked with the same HD configurations. Only after I switched hard drives to EIDE/66 connectors I successfully completed Linux installation. Could somebody clarify me if Linux can't work with ATA/100 devices or there is another way to make Linux to work with ATA/100 devices. Thank you in advance for any suggestions. I don't know if I just had too much time on my hands or waited patiently for the 'MSU v Missouri' game tonight but I went through the list of US retailers on SuSE's site and looked at the sites of: http://www.chumbo.com and http://www.softwarebuys.com They are mightily alike?! Then I compared their prices and they are of course NOT the same for SuSE Pro 7.0. [SLE] IBM Deskstar 75GXP (DTLA-307020) IDE Hard-Drive

Hi, I looked into SuSE's hardware database to see if the above hard-drive is supported. Couldn't find any reference there. I've seem some references to IBM hard-drives in the mailing list archives, but none specifies the model. So, 1) Is it supported? 2) My motherboard (Asus K7V) maxs at UltraDMA/66. I assume that a UltraDMA/100 would work, is that right? (Yes, I know that with a controler I could take full advantage of it... but that's gonna be a 2nd stage.) Ive given up tryign to get linux to run on my system since upgrading my graphics card. this is a real disappointment as i couldnt wait to see how fast it was going to fly.
