Ok, I wasn't going to bite on this one, but now Tim hit a soft spot with me. I personally feel that SuSE is the premier distro, having used others in the past. I have spent money on 6.0, 6.1, 6.2, 6.3, and recently, 6.4. So, SuSE has $150 of mine - and worth every penny. Now, I think (flame retardent - I said I think, not know) that Red Hat and Caldera are vacuums for unwielding new users willing to spend cash for the unknown. Had all the newbies out ther realized that the most complete distro - one that RH sells for $70 - $100 is available from SuSE for $30, they would have jumped. Oh well, let time, experience, reputation, and performance be the judge - then SuSE will have market share - without moving to the "you get what you pay for, since you pay more for us, we must be more" marketing scheme. So, I don't want to see SuSE turn into RH, or worse, closer to Microsoft. Here's a parting thought - when I bought my 6.4, it was right next to MS 2000 Server Edition priced at $999! I laughed all the way to the cash register. I hope I, in the future, am not paying $999 for GPL software. Because then, the 50+ hour download will be worth it!! Ron Heron --- "Timothy R. [SLE] Very strange DSL/Netscape problem

Hello, I've got an ADSL connection that is pretty speedy for me. Using Netscape and the javascript at www.dslreports.com I consistently get 1 to 1.2 mbps downloads when I am logged as myself. I installed only Netscape Communicator 4.73 for my wife and when I log on as her I am only getting 275 to 300 kbps, one third the speed!!! I can't figure what the hell the difference is. Netscape is setup the same for both of us. Any ideas on what I can check to see why she gets such low speed???? Oh yeah, I'm using kdm and WindowMaker if it matters. [SLE] SSHd

I am wanting to install and "play with" the SSHd. Is there a place that I can download a binary type RPM for SuSE 6.4? If not, I can use the source (as Obi Wan would say). [SLE] Installation problems ( updated ) / installing without a floppy ?

Hi all, I have a laptop which I wish to install SuSE onto I have a few problems.... firstly I should point out the physical constraints... the machine is a libretto 50ct pentium 75 (overclocked to 100) 16megs memory 810meg hd 1 pcmcia slot the floppy drive is external and plugs into the pcmcia port. I have a freecom cdrom drive which plugs into the parallel port or pcmcia port the floppy works when I first boot.... and the SuSE installation starts fine... however when it comes to changing to the modules disk the floppy drive no longer responds...and this leaves me stuck.... I can accept that the floppy may well have a PCMCIA setup that is not supported is there any other way to install SuSE onto this machine...! any help much appreciated... [SLE] bug in the dhclient-script file

I just confirmed there is a bug in the dhclient-script file. The one included with 6.4, as well as the updated rpm package, caused my dhclient to reset my hostname when it renewed the lease. As a result, after 5 minutes, I had to logout to open a new program as I had just become a foreign entity in my own machine. It would set my hostname to the first readable directory entry in the / directory, which was bin. I replaced this file with the one from the isc version and everything is working fine now. There are 3 lines that would need to be deleted to make the files the same, or just get the script file for linux from isc. [SLE] Apache won't start after upgrading 6.3 -> 6.4

After the upgrade (6.3 to 6.4) Apache won't start with the following message: Starting service httpdSyntax error on line 193 of /etc/httpd.conf: Cannot load /usr/lib/apache/libphp3.so into server: libc-client.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory After some searching the file libc-client.so is indeed not present on my system (after the upgrade a lot of other links are broken, so I thought it was a similar problem), but libc-client.a is. I've trying to find the package which should contain the file, but without succes. Can anybody help me to solve this one? regards G.H.M. That's precisely why I stopped buying RH long ago. The retailers can't move all the Personal/Professional/Enterprise versions of a particular distro fast enough to keep up with the release cycles. So, to unload all the old inventory, they keep the older versions on the shelf long after the latest-n-greatest have been released. That, plus the edition nobody buys at the retail level (i.e. an overpriced Enterprise Edition). This is Bad Move, in my opinion. I switched to SuSE because the retailers in my area usually kept old and unpopular editions on the shelf and I could never find what I was looking for. The SuSE packages came in a one-size-fits-all package, was reasonably priced, and didn't take up half the store aisle, thus it was typically up to date.
