Re: [SLE] LenZ or other SuSE Employees- Please let the loyal SuSE users know what's up!!! (was RE: [SLE] SuSE 7 Deluxe)
Ok, I wasn't going to bite on this one, but now Tim
hit a soft spot with me. I personally feel that SuSE
is the premier distro, having used others in the past.
I have spent money on 6.0, 6.1, 6.2, 6.3, and
recently, 6.4. So, SuSE has $150 of mine - and worth
every penny. Now, I think (flame retardent - I said I
think, not know) that Red Hat and Caldera are vacuums
for unwielding new users willing to spend cash for the
unknown. Had all the newbies out ther realized that
the most complete distro - one that RH sells for $70 -
$100 is available from SuSE for $30, they would have
jumped. Oh well, let time, experience, reputation,
and performance be the judge - then SuSE will have
market share - without moving to the "you get what you
pay for, since you pay more for us, we must be more"
marketing scheme. So, I don't want to see SuSE turn
into RH, or worse, closer to Microsoft.
Here's a parting thought - when I bought my 6.4, it
was right next to MS 2000 Server Edition priced at
$999! I laughed all the way to the cash register. I
hope I, in the future, am not paying $999 for GPL
software. Because then, the 50+ hour download will be
worth it!!

It's disappointing to see the distro going like this, however, price is my main concern, so I must ask... How do those German prices compare to that of previous versions? My main fear is that even if they are the same, retailers might start charging more for the Professional just so they can charge over $20 for the Personal (right now, what will become the Pro edition costs $29 at most retailers I know of).
I sure hope it doesn't become like Caldera and RedHat where the version you want costs as much as Windows (even Microsoft charges only $20 for minor updates). Doesn't make sense paying too much for a free operating system...

According to a SuSE add in c't, there will be two versions, Personal and Professional. The first one has 3 CDs, 3 newbie-compatible handbooks (installation, configuration, applications) and 60 days of installation support. The Professional version comes with 6 CDs or 1 DVD, 4 manuals and 90 days of installation support. Personal'll cost 89 DM, Professional 129 DM, the update SuSE Linux --> Professional 79 DM.

I agree with you Ron. I surely hope SuSE doesn't switch to RedHat like packaging, I really really really dislike RedHat's high prices for free software they (for the most part) didn't create. I thank Michael Hasenstein from SuSE for his explanation of pricing, which sound fine, although it still sounds like it isn't as good as the old $29 6-CD full manual package. -Tim ----------------------------------------------------------------- Timothy R. and also Red Hat commercialize the service also, for example to download a file quicker from its FTP, we have two options, using the slowest ever FTP server at ftp.redhat.com or using pay one at priority.redhat.com (http://www.redhat.com/apps/commerce/support.html) I think redhat should choose, whether its want to commercialize the boxed version or the service (FTP), and *not* both. Anyway, I prefer Mandrake than RedHat, because I think the installation process of Mandrake is more user friendly then Redhat, and at mandrake we can resize the partition of existing windows, very easy, using the disk drake. -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/support/faq

What has all this RedHat mandrake stuff got to do with a SuSE list. I've got lots of good reasons why I use SuSE rather than RH/Mandrake but I'm not sure how comparing the two/ dissing RH gets us much further in discussing how to use SuSE. Mike
