[SLE] CDROM in 2.2.16 screwed up?

Hi list, I just upgraded my SuSE 6.4 to 2.2.16 kernel from SuSE and bump! Kodak Picture CD which mounted without problems on kernel 2.2.14 lost a couple of directories. I booted back into 2.2.14 kernel, mounted CD, all directories are there. Reboted into 2.2.16, directories are gone. Some more details on my system, if it matters: AMD K6-2-500 CPU, 128 MB RAM, FIC 2013 motherboard (VIA chipset), ATAPI 48x CD-ROM, k_deflt kernel. Sorry, I can't dig deeper into the roots of the problem, but it looks much like the situation we've had with 2.2.6 (or am I mistaken) "stable" kernel, when suddenly msdos filesystems stopped to work and it was a matter of someone changing some concept in filesystems (to improve them) but forgetting about msdos. What's the general attitude of SuSE towards 2.2.16 kernel? Use it at your risk? Why then label it stable? Sorry for sharp words. I like SuSE very much. That's really distribution of my choice, since 1995 I used Slackware, Red Hat, and finally, SuSE. I really wish to help improve the product. The author has put effort into designing a virus born system which, when installed on your machine, communicates with a number of central servers via the 'net. He's gone to lengths to think through the ways in which these programs can get into systems, how they can morph themselves so they can't be detected by scanning software, how they can spread themselves, and how they can sit dormant, waiting for an instruction to come in that causes them to act. It puts the fate of your machine into the hands of someone, somewhere, who might sometime decide to type the word "DESTROY" into a file somewhere. This is aimed it at Windows, but, given there's no lack of root exploits on Linux machines, this could easily be reworked to infiltrate then attack Linux boxes. Hi! I set up wvdial SUID on my machine so that ordinary users can use modem: -rwsr-x--- 1 root dialout 92084 May 9 05:42 /usr/bin/wvdial BTW, I don't understand why this is not the default setting. What is the purpose of the dialout group then? Unfortunately, when dialout members use kwvdial - which is just a GUI wrapper around wvdial, SUID permissions are denied. [SLE] Disk command

Hi list, I would like to move my whole SuSE6.4 install from one hard drive to another. Right now it is on a 10G drive and I want to move (copy) it to my 20G drive, which at the moment, is secondary master ( /dev/hdc). After the move, it will be moved to primary master position (/dev/hda), and the 10G drive moved to secondary master position. I have seen reference to the dd command, but I would like to be sure that this is what I want and that I use it correctly. I really don't want to do a re-install if possible....there's too much set up. I'm waiting for the new SuSE and/or KDE2 before I do that. Also, would I change lilo and fstab before moving the system so it remains bootable or will I be able to get in with the CD to change these after the move? Or am I opening a can 'o worms? Hi, I posted a response last week, but I guess it didn't make it. It was a nice, detailed message, which I don't have time for today, so I'll just get to the dirt: 1. Run #e2fsck -f -b 8193 /dev/hdx The x is for the drive that's hosed (usually hda) 2. I mentioned before, that without fixing errors, you will have problems such as these, esp. the ld.so.cache (which is a map of all your libraries, and essential for any database, gcc, xlibs, etc..) 3. The messages are telling you that you have dead blocks, or hosed up blocks. You need to fix it, if you really love your system. 4. If the command above doesn't work, try a new superblock (1, 8193,16385, etc) Also, you can use the -y option (says yes to everything) but it's more fun to have to answer to thousands of questions, makes you feel like you actually fixed something. :) email me at ron(a)airenetmexico.com if you need more help. [SLE] xscreensaver 3.24 locks and refuses reentry

Folks - My current setup, suse 6.4, helix-gnome 1.2 runs xscreensaver in X. All works fine, except: If I set the screensaver to lock the screen, it will not let me back in. I have to kill xscreensaver from another console. My guess is something to do with PAM and access to the password file, but I haven't gotten any further.Any help would be greatly appreciated. - Steve __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
