How do you even get the penguin to appear? It popped up when booting the setup CD ROM (6.4), but when the actual system started, it didn't appear. [SLE] wvdial.dod writes over chap-secrets...

I am having difficulty, lately, dialing into my ISP and have found that wvdial.dod is inserting quotes around my username and password in my chap-secrets file. When I delete the quotes, they still end up in there. The problem is, my connection never works with the quotes in the password file - my ISP gives a password authorization error, yet when I take the quotes out and do a regular wvdial (not the .dod version) it works perfectly. I am stumped. I tried changing the permissions on the chap-secrets file to root read-only, but since wvdial.dod is also running as root, it writes right over them. [SLE] what to call a stand-alone home PC

Hi List, my home PC is not set up with a network card and not permanently conncted to the internet. I am using a modem to connect, mainly to the local hub at my university. The question that I am having is what to call my home machine. the network configuration menu in yast will eventually guide you to an entry for your hostname and domain. I don't have a static domain of course, so what do I put in there? Trying to just put in a hostname without a domain name will not work. I used to just put my university's domain name in there until I was told by the local system administrators that my security messages somehow ended up being sent to root(a)ufl.edu rather than root@localhost. So, what is the correct solution here? I couldn't find a good description in the SuSE manual as it mainly focuses on how to set up a machine within a network. [SLE] 2 Linux boxes and one monitor

Can somebody direct me to a "how-to" use just one monitor for 2 Linux boxes (on a LAN)? I have considered the hardware solution before by using one of those data switches but they're terribly expensive ($150+). [SLE] reiserfs & quotas

Hi! I have a small lan which has a server with the following file system structure: /dev/hda1 ext2 / /dev/hdb1 reiserfs /usr /dev/hdb3 reiserfs /home /dev/hdb2 reiserfs /mnt/hdb2 /dev/hda1 has an option usrquota included in /etc/fstab, and quotas get checked and set at boot, if I try to do it on reiserfs it wont work - no error, but quotas don't even get checked, nor set (quota user shows no quota set). I hope someone can help me or I will have to reformat the /home partition to ext2 again :( Should I patch anything else, are there some special quotautils for reiserfs. Just solved the problem . . . I compiled kernel with no sound support, installed OSS (from pay) using yast, put "/usr/local/bin/soundon" in boot.local, and the crackling sounds disappeared.
