I have Gnome Helix running fine on my SuSE 6.3 machine. Start in runlevel 2 Make sure /var/lib/gdm is chown'd to gdm.gdm Run gdm as root from the command line Select Gnome as the Environment and tada. (I installed all GNOME-HELIX as RPMs!!! And they all installed without errors! - Just got the packages needed. Did you get the ones specifically for SuSE 6.3?) [SLE] YAST/System Adminstration/Backup

After finally getting my new system set up under 6.4 I wanted to create a backup, but the only packages included are those that were modified from the original RPMs. Files that are not part of an installed package are not searched for on the system. The option is given, but when I say YES, it continues to the next screen with no processing. On my running 6.3 box the entire system is searched and many files are added to the list to be tar'ed. Does anyone else experience this same phenomenon? [SLE] xfree 4.0 (Oops!)

Here is my current situation. <sniffle> I installed the latest XFree on a SuSE 6.3 box (with KDE 1.1.2). I installed in via the included install script (Xinstall.sh) after backing up my current configuration. I then used XFreeSetup to setup my various hardware. Now, I can't seem to load KDE. I am assuming that there is a link or script that I need to change, but I am unsure as to which one (and where). </sniffle> I suppose I should have waited for an RPM ;) When I type startx, it takes me to the grey screen with an X mouse cursor. Everything is working fine to this point. I can move my mouse, correct resolution, and I can left-click to get a menu to exit. Could someone point me in the correct direction for editing something so startx can find KDE or whatever? [SLE] Getting an NTL cable modem. Advice/experience sought.

I am currently running a SuSe 6.3 Internet/file server using a 56K modem. The Linux box acts as a server for an NT box and W98 laptop. My current ISP offers static IP and SMTP mail delivery. I am getting an NTL cable modem installed later this week. My new CM ISP uses dynamic IP and POP3 mail delivery. I have just bought Suse 6.4 and will be performing a fresh install when the CM is set up and ready to go. The Linux server will have two NICs, one for the internal network, the other for the CM. One is a tulip based LinkSys PCI card and the other a D-Link via-rhine based PCI card. I have been using the Linksys card for my internal network successfully for a few months now. As I have never set up a Linux box for POP3 or dynamic IP, I was looking for any advice on setting up my server for use with the cable modem. Any advice on setting up sendmail (which will only be used for outgoing mail), firewall, masquerading, and squid for such a setup would be appreciated. My main question really is regarding the use of DHCP. How does routing work when the IP can change at any time (as far as I know NTL reallocate IP addresses after about 4 hours)? When using a modem routes can be set up in the ip-up/ip-down scripts. However, the CM doesn't use ppp, it appears as a standard network via the NIC into which it is attached. Does the dhcp client daemon automatically adjust the routing ? If so, how does this affect firewalling and masquerading ? Is anyone out there running such a setup with Suse? Any recommendations for howtos, documentation, web sites and personal experience gratefully received. I am still making an attempt at getting my USB 4100c to function under 6.4. Scanimage can't find any devices. Does a "here's how to make it work" exist anywhere. Any clues/suggestions ? You can try installing the libhd package and running hwinfo. This is the hardware detection library YaST2 uses. It's a little more verbose than YaST2 and could give you a clue what's going wrong. It helped me to find out that YaST2 was choking while trying to detect my modem. After unplugging it, YaST2 worked.
