Hello all, I was wondering what is the best way of detecting and disabeling someone who is scanning you? I have a port scanner to see who it is but I need to get rid of them. Is there a program specific to Suse 6.4 that will help me out here? I've had a couple of DoSs from two IP addresses simultaneously. Any help would be appreciated. My browser (IE5) on my client (Win2000) dies before my router (SuSE 6.4+wvdial.dod+modem) connects to the site. Can I either give IE a longer timeout or give linux a longer time out? [SLE] Network security

I have a static IP, but nothing points to my machine yet (meaning DNS or any links). The only way people could find my IP address is by my mail or port scanning the network, I'd guess. Anyway, I surprised how often my firewall rejects connections. I get quite a few telnet and ftp attempts (those are blocked not by the firewall, but with tcpwrappers which does a finger of them when they try to connect), but also for port 137 which is netbios ns. Anyone know what people are trying when they try to connect to port 137? Is this just a fact of life that everyday people try to access? [SLE] Partitioning Problem

SuSE v6.3 on a pentium with a 20 GB HD (along with two others) installed as the primary slave. I want to change the type of the last three partitions on the 20 GB HD (it's partitioned into 10 DOS partitions) from DOS to Linux (I have RH v6.1 on one of the other HDs on the platform) in order to install v6.3. I had started the process yesterday and was about half way through the install when there was a power failure and the machine rebooted into W95. At that point I discovered that W95 wasn't reading the changed partition table. I use PowerDesk 4.0 on that machine (on both of my machines as a matter of fact, although first on Igor, the pentium) because of the unexplained failure of the original MS file manager. If I go back into YaST and change the linux partitions back to DOS, PowerDesk will read the restored partitions, after reformatting ( with the new feature of not supporting long file names) as before. I would appreciate some insight and pointers, as to what I'm doing, or failing to do! Thanks in advance. Stephen P. Hi I have a dumb question : I still am not sure exactly where to add commands to run programmes I want to start at boot time; I want my ISDN dial server to start automatically whenever the machine is booted. Hi everyone. Have the (very nice) xpdq interface running on 6.4 with my HP560c printer. I can print ascii and PS files. The documentation tells me that I can add other formats too and gives an example for jpeg. But it doesn't work. Anyone using pdq? Hi! I have two questions: 1. I have noticed that my ATI XPERT@WORK 8MB graphic card only runs at 24bit depth @ 1280x1024 resolution. In windooze it runs at 32bit depth at the same resolution (I have suse 6.2 and the XFree that came with it). Is there perhaps a newer X-server for this card - I have xmach64-3.3.4-7 installed. 2. Can someone please tell me if there are some specific changes needed to upgrade to kernel 2.4.x (pre) from kernel 2.2.16pre2. THX in advance! I'm using Suse6.4, I need to send a group of members with sendmail, can sendmail be configured to send a group of member with an email address, eg: when I send to this email address, member(a)abc.com, then the members that have been included in a file or may be other methods, as long as they can be indicated as the member of abc.com, then after I sent to this email address(member(a)abc.com). all the member of abc.com will recieved one copy of my mail... thanks ckh :) _____________________________________________________________________ Sure, you can have free email. [SLE] etherboot machine will not start inetd

I have a machine which is booting under etherboot fairly normally, but has a couple of errors: 1. inetd will not start 2. the keyboard will not work Since inetd will not start, telnet is broken. There is no log/messages file produced so I was worried about NFS access on the NFS server, but I have got a log/boot.msg (2.05 BogoMips WOW :) ) There are too many files to send them all, but if someone has an idea what they would like to see then let me know. Hi, I am new using SuSe so maybe my questions are a little dumb, but I can't find a solution. As a precedent I can tell you that I am the proud owner of a @Home connection to the internet. That is simple on windows98 but with linux I still can't figure out what is going on. By the way I am using SuSe 6.1, I hope that is not too old. I tried to hard code the configuration with the data provided by @Home. and I couldn't get my connection to work. I think the card is recognized because if i give dmesg it shows that the card is recognized (I put part of the output): ----- tulip.c:v0.90 10/20/98 becker(a)cesdis.gsfc.nasa.gov eth0: Macronix 98715 PMAC at 0x2400, 00 80 c6 f8 3e c0, IRQ 11. ------- but even with that i couldn't get the connection to work. Hello suse-linux-e, Hi, ALl Now I have two kernel Kernel 2.2.10 from SuSE 6.2 and Kernel 2.2.12-20 from My other CD. both there in /boot. and the modules different on /lib/modules/<version> Now if I boot there is a error messages "Modprobe: Can't modprobe char-major-62" What is char major 62, before has two kernel it's fine. [SLE] Voodoo3 2000/Quake3 problems...

I have a dual-celeron with a Voodoo3 2000 and a fresh install of 6.4. The 3dfx module is loaded but when I try to run quake3 I get: "No default configuration 'mesa3.1' in init file _GlideInitEnvironment: libglide2x.so expected Voodoo Graphics, none detected" None of the 3dfx tests work either. If I run test3Dfx it gives me the "expected Voodoo Graphics, none detected" message. The testGlide2x works correctly, I get the 3dfx logo. The testGlide3x does not, I get the blue screen but no logo. Anyone know what the problem might be? Do I need to reload the Glide3 rpm? I just installed SuSE 6.4 and can't get the UMP Midi plugin to work. I had this working on SuSE 6.3 and I tried to set it up in the same way on 6.4 but I must be missing something. The plugin shows itself on the web page but there is no sound. Netscape's Help->About Plugins shows the following: ===================================================================== Mime Type Description Suffixes Enabled audio/x-midi Larry Hoff's UMP plugin version 1.10 mid, midi Yes audio/midi Larry Hoff's UMP plugin version 1.10 mid, midi Yes ===================================================================== I am able to play Midi file using both Timidity and KMidi. If I switch Netscape to use Plugger 3.2 instead of UMP for Midi files that works also. (This is not good enough since there are no controls for playing/pausing/stopping the audio with the Plugger 3.2 plugin. I'd much prefer to use UMP.) [SLE] MD5 Passwords

I am running SuSE 6.4 on an AMD K6-2 450 Mhz with 128 meg of memory and a 20 gig harddisk. I have been researching encryption and I sucessfully swicted my system to use MD5 passwords by editing /etc/pam.d/passwd and add inthe md5 modules. I have also rebuilt my password database to use MD5 encryption. However, I have a problem now with sudo. When a valid sudo user tries to run anything as root and it asks for the password...the password prompt fails. Is there some way to force sudo to use MD5 passwordS? I have tried to add the same module to /etc/pam.d/sudo but the problem still occurs. Any help would be appreciated.
