If you have many users, many printers, or anything else complex going on, I recommend using PDQ as a front-end to LPD-protocol based network printing (you can print via the lpd protocol to the local machine). In many such situations, rather than using BSD's lpd as the back-end, I recommend LPRng: <end snip> My scenario is this: an HP LaserJet 2100 attached to a Linux server, a Win98 box w/ an attached HP DeskJet 722c, and two Linux workstations. I want to be able to print from any box to the laserjet, initially. Since the win98 box will be connecting via samba to the printer, I think lprng on the server would be a better choice as I get the impression that samba support in pdq is kinda sketchy. I would like to use pdq/xpdq on the two linux workstations, though. My concern is that last night when I was trying it out w/ the printer connected directly to one of the workstations, using xpdq and a driver file from the pdq-o-matic on the Printer Compatibility page, it printed nicely... when it printed. For lack of a better description, it seemed like the print job got hung up in the printer. The laserjet just sat there w/ the data light blinking, and xpdq claimed the job was finished. If I resubmitted the job, the printer would spit out one, and then go back to blinking. Kinda strange, in my mind, at least. As an added strangeness, the printer never showed up in kwrite, when I wanted to try printing from there. I assume I would have to concoct some sort of /etc/printcap to go along with the pdq setup. Not yet. I must admit, I'm pretty tempted. I like the GUI tools and what not. My question is has anyone used a hybrid pdq/lprng system? I saw a site allude to this recently (may have been on the pdq home page), for systems where there is more than one host/printer. I have my Laserjet 2100 working under the default lpd, and I am a little hesitant to go messing with it.
