[SLE] Trident 4DWave Audio Chip Set

Hello, I have successfully installed Suse 6.3 on an Intel system, but am having trouble with the sound card. The card is an Aztech card that uses the Trident 4DWave chip set (PCI). Has anyone out there gotten the sound to work with this particular chipset?? I believe the correct driver exists in /lib/modules/2.2.13/misc, and that I am somehow not setting up /etc/modules.conf correctly. Any help would be appreciated. [SLE] VMware License ? Promo code ? (Where are these ?)

Hello Everyone, I finally installed VMware from the SuSE 6.2 CD set (6 CD's total... I bought the box set last year). First issue, when I startup VMware at the root prompt I get a nice message saying there isn't a license in the /root/.vmware directory path. Second issue, the message states that I will need to go to the www.vmware.com/suse web page and register. I tried, but I don't bloody don't have a 'Promo Code'. Where the bloody heck is this 'Promo Code' ? Has anyone out there in SuSE land figured this business out ? Thank you for your help in advance. I've been looking around for Java-related stuff and discovered I'd already (I think) installed the gnu java compiler, gcj off the SuSE 6.3 CD. Unless I'm mistaken this is part of gcc. When I try to run gcj, it says gcj: libgcj.spec: No such file or directory Anybody know what libgcj I need? All I can find is for gcc version 2.95.1 and I have version 2.95.2. I did download libgcj 2.95.1 rpm but it wouldn't install saying I needed gcc version 2.95.1. -- Kenneth R. [SLE] 3 problems: mime types; print weirdness; port 7101

{Running 6.3 (upgrade from 6.2); 2.2.13} Sorry for the length of this post - I guess I got a little carried away.......... Problem 1: I logged on as a user the other day and received a whole series of error message boxes like the following: Could not find mime type application/x-scalc in /home/mdcleary/.kde/share/applink/StarOffice.kdelnk I get a total of seven of these messages. Each one says the same thing except for the part following "application/". The other applications are x-smf, x-sdraw, x-sds, x-swriter, x-sgl, x-sda. After clicking on "OK" to all of these messages, everything seems normal. I looked in the StarOffice.kdelnk file, under the "Application" tab, and there are two windows at the bottom of this tab. In the left window I can see all of these applications listed along with some others. I don't see any reference to mime types. This DOES NOT occur if I log in as root. Does anyone have any idea what this means & what I can do to get rid of these messages? After upgrading to 6.3, I ran the StarOffice setup both as root and user. In both cases, it opened a window which said that it had detected that SO 5.1 was already installed, and gave me the option to either uninstall it, or repair the installation. At first I just canceled out of this. After seeing the error messages as user, I tried the repair option. This did not seem to do anything. Any ideas? Problem 2: In /etc/rc.d there is a README file which explains the SuSE boot concept. I decided to print it out last night. I went to the directory, clicked on the file and it opens in the default editor (kwrite I guess). I choose File/Print and the print dialogue opens, and I click OK. At the bottom of the editor window I see a message that it is "printing .....etc.". All normal so far. But then nothing happens - it doesn't print. So I go to another document and go through the same process, but this time it prints fine. I compare the permissions on both files and they are the same. I go through this routine both as root and as user with the same results. ----By the way, I have an HP 712c printer. I have been through the pbmtoppa and apsfilter setup stuff before and have been successfully printing starting w/ 6.2---- I printed a test page from StarOffice no prob. I printed a page off a web site using Netscape no prob. But I still can NOT print that README file. The only thing I could think of is maybe it was the file size. The README file is ~6300 bytes or so. Some of the other stuff I printed was only 1 - 2 K. I'm sure I've printed bigger files before though. Oh yeah, I have also tried selecting text in the README & printing just the selection. Nope - does not print. Can anyone tell me what I've missed here? I'm completely stumped. Problem 3: After I had been messing about w/ printing, I was using Netscape for a while. I logged out and then logged in as a user. I typed in "startx" as usual, but it would not start. This is the same behavior you sometimes see if you are using xfstt (which I am) - you need to start xfstt first, or X won't start. I set this up so this is done automatically and I was kinda surprised when this happened. So I typed in "xfstt &" but was then informed by the console that it couldn't open port 7101 and that I should try another port. I then logged in as root and tried to startx w/ the same results. Finally, I rebooted and it was back to normal - could startx w/ no probs. Anyone know what was going on here, and how I can avoid this occurring again? [SLE] YAST 1.03.4 display problem

I recently upgraded to 6.3 and in the process of the upgrade my YAST program does not properly display the [ ]'s on the package line under Choose/Install Packages -> Change/Create Configuration ... For example I get i aaa_base SuSE Linux base package instead of [i] aaa_base SuSE Linux base package I've tried reinstalling YAST several times but to no avail. [SLE] Problem with the printer

Hi there, I have an annoying problem with my printer. Everytime I boot the computer it'll go a little crazy and start printing. Not a whole page - about 1/4th. Then It'll print just a little bit every 10 seconds. It'll print the whole title of, let's say, a letter at once and then it'll slow down to that ultraslow pace of a little bit of activity every 10 secs. I tried reconfiguring the sucker but to no avail. When I turn it off and then on again, it'll do something even crazier: it'll start printing the same damn header over and over (on a fresh A4 every time, not on the sae one) and it'll also print some weird signs. After a few turns it'll slow down again to a little activity every 10 seconds again. I'm at loss here! [SLE] Motherboard hell

I don't know whether this is a Suse specific question, but it is Suse related because I am running Suse Linux. I had a CD-R drive that was connected to a Mac and I wanted to connect it to my PC running Suse Linux. Right so I had to buy a SCSI adpater. I bought a cheap ATTO and adapter cable to conenct the wide ATTO to the narrow CD-R. To get this to work I had to set the termination on the board so the upper bits would terminate and the lower ones would be terminated by the device. However, couldn't get into the boards Setup utility. I got the message: No Setup Utility Available, Please Flash BIOS. Back at the store where I got the card, it worked. After several more goes, I downgraded to a older ISA Adaptec AHA 1510. I recompiled to kernel and it works! Great I've got the CD-R up and running cdrecord works like a dream. However, now the floppy doesn't work. I can no longer boot off the floppy. What's more, if I mount the floppy one of three things will happen. 1) The mount point /floppy/ becomes an executable /floppy, 2) Linux says "Wrong fs, two many mounted filesystems... etc". 3)The floppy mounts but the file names and data are corrupted. These are on floppies which I know worked, because they mounted fine on a Linux laptop and on a Mac. This happens whatever filesystem is on the floppy, whether msdos, ext2 or hfs (I have hfs support compiled into the kernel). The problem gets worse the longer the computer is on. Weirdly I can mount floppies first thing in the morning, after a couple of hours, I can't. If I take the SCSI board out the floppy works better, but not perfectly. Sometimes, perfectly good disks are rejected. Does this sound as if the motherboard is fried, especially together with the ATTO problem? It is a Pcchips M571 Socket 7 board with SiS IDE controllers, graphics and CMI8330 sound. Another odd thing is that there is one 32MB SIMM, but the manual which came with the board says that these should come in pairs. I've emailed ATTO about the earlier problems and the only solution that we came up with was some incompatibility between the ATTO board and this motherboard. The ATTO board checks out fine. If the motherboard is fried, any recommendations for something that is reliable and sturdy, for a machine that does lots of web browsing, quite a bit of compiling, lots of word processing, and lots of LaTeX work? Please help Yes, since a VFAT file system is not able to store permissions, it is not possible to change them. But you can define the permissions which the files appear to have. [SLE] Getting rid of wacky files

As a result of a disk clobber, I ended up with some files with weird permissions, dates, and sizes (but correct names). A typical permission set, according to ls, was: ?--------- and the dates had years such as 1926 and 2010. As root, I couldn't do anything to these files; rm, chmod, and mv all gave the message ``Operation not permitted''. How can I make those files go away?
