[SLE] Users having a Shell-Account: they can see everything!

Dear List, I have a couple of Shell-Account-users who can chdir to the root, and dir everything in my filesystem. Is there any way to confine them to their homedirectory like ProFTPd can? I can't remember if you can tell kppp to look on a specific port rather than /dev/modem. If kppp is not looking at /dev/modem make sure /dev/modem points to the correct port - ttyS0 for Com1, ttyS1 for Com2. If you start Minicom can you connect to the modem & get a response when you type "at" & return? Look in /var/log/messages for the trail of woe leading up to pppd dying. Still struggling with the command line dialup. Kppp works fine however. wvdialconf tell me 'no modem detected' wvdial dials up and connects then immediately dies with 'PPP deamon has died' and procedes to redial. Any ideas anyone? (6.3 with Diamond external 56.6 modem) Best wishes from Steve. [SLE] netscape pdf plugin problem

With SuSE 6.3, my netscape always starts with an error sayng that a pdf-related plugin could not be loaded: ERROR: libc.so.5: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory Cant load plugin /usr/X11R6/lib/Acrobat4/Browsers/intellinux/nppdf.so. Ignored. However I have acroread installed and the file is there: ldd -v /usr/X11R6/lib/Acrobat4/Browsers/intellinux/nppdf.so /lib/libNoVersion.so.1 => /lib/libNoVersion.so.1 (0x40013000) libc.so.5 => not found libc.so.6 => /lib/libc.so.6 (0x4001e000) /lib/ld-linux.so.2 => /lib/ld-linux.so.2 (0x80000000) Version information: /lib/libNoVersion.so.1: libc.so.6 (GLIBC_2.0) => /lib/libc.so.6 /lib/libc.so.6: ld-linux.so.2 (GLIBC_2.1.1) => /lib/ld-linux.so.2 ld-linux.so.2 (GLIBC_2.1) => /lib/ld-linux.so.2 ld-linux.so.2 (GLIBC_2.0) => /lib/ld-linux.so.2 The missing libc5 is also there (package shlibs5): ldconfig -N -X -v | grep libc /usr/i486-linux-libc5/lib: libc.so.5 => libc.so.5.4.46 What's going on? [SLE] nscd && useradd quirks (6.2)

Hello list, I'm a newcomer here. SuSE 6.2 displays some strange behaviour if a user is added via useradd and the nscd daemon is running. Originally I thought this was a PAM related problem (although has nothing to do w/ PAM) because of the problem itself which is: After a user is added via user added, ``passwd newuser'' chokes, claiming that ``newuser'' doesn't exist. Try it again a few seconds later (up to 10 seconds later) and all is well. Thanks to Thorsten Kukuk (kukuk(a)suse.de) who was kind enough to respond and say that it is useradd's fault; as he states "useradd doesn't clear the nscd cache, so the user is cached as non existend." The easiest workaround (suggested by Kukuk) is to disable nscd (via /etc/rc.config). This works well but nscd is somewhat handy to have around. Kukuk says that this problem has been resolved in SuSE 6.3; upgrading to 6.3, at this point, is not an option. My question for the list, or any SuSE techs, is how exactly has the problem been resolved in 6.3? A useradd that clears the cache? Some tweaking of the nscd.conf? Constructive feedback would be much appreciated; I'd like to get this quirk ironed out w/o disabling a potentially useful service. Hello When checking my logs this morning I found a line in /var/log/warn that I have not seen before. Feb 3 21:08:55 "hostname" in.identd[21840]: request_thread: read(11, ..., 1023) failed: Connection reset by peer What does this mean? Short answer: yes. If you only want to LOOK there is a filesystem driver in the Linux kernel for the NTFS filesystem. Unfortunately, this driver is still very unreliable when it comes to writing. Some people have reported complete crashes of the NT partition after writing from Linux, while others experience no problems. If you want to use it to exchange data between Linux and NT, you might be better off using a FAT partition, which both Linux and NT can use without problems. [SLE] Caching only nameserver

I'd like to run a acaching only nameserver. I have taken the following steps. Started named, and set up named.conf with a forward first entry, and a forwarders entry that points to a DNS server. ( This wasnt necessary, since I have the root.hints file). Are all requests automatically cached? Or do I also need to run nscd, with a nscd.conf that caches hostname requests. [SLE] Linuxconf screwed up my settings

I downloaded linuxconf from the suse web site and installed it. I looked at it and thought I made no changes, but when I came to boot up this morning, linux wouldn't start. I got a bunch of questions and tried every which way to answer them. It always hung at a point where it said it was running some sysvinit scripts and then a few garbage characters, done, and some more garbage. I can boot a rescue system but I don't know where to go from there. [SLE] Three Q's: /dev/pts, NSCD, identd

Hello again to the SuSE list. Well, I finally did it--upgraded from 5.2 with kernel 2.0.36 to 6.3/2.2.13. Now I've got three questions that aren't addressed in the SuSE manual, AFAIK: 1. 'mount' shows a mysterious "devpts on /dev/pts type devpts (rw,gid=5,mode=0620)". What's that all about. 2. What on earth is that NSCD that I've disabled? I've read 'man nscd', but it doesn't help. I use a PPP dialup connection, and rely on my ISP's nameservers, BTW. 3. Same puzzlement re that 'identd' daemon that started on each tty. What would it do for me? [SLE] Home Network problem?

Hi all, I've got a two computer network setup at home. Computer #1 is Opus, it's a 486/66mhz with 8mb ram. Computer #2 is CW (Chilly Willy), it's a 486/100mhz with 32mb ram. Both are running SuSE 5.2 with kernel 2.0.33. Opus is connected to the 'net by a 56k modem. Opus has no problems with connecting to the 'net in anyway. CW is connected to Opus by twisted pair cable. I can ping to CW from Opus ok and from CW to Opus is fine. I can telnet both ways and I have a nfs file system set up between the two. My problem is when I want to use lynx, netscape, pine, ping etc from CW to the net it does not work. Lynx, and netscape just sits there with a "looking up xxxxxxxxx first" and I have to do a kill from /root. Using ping all I get is 100% package lost.
