[SLE] PCI Modems

Any one out there know how to get PCI modems working/recognized under SuSE Linux 6.3? Am having an absolutely horrible time and believed I have tried everything. Can you add serial ports? Does the kernel have any options for PCI modems? When I run statserial I get some output for /dev/cua1. I believe that that is more or less grand-fathered and we're supposed to be pointing to /dev/ttSn. Can anyone offer any help/suggestions? You might be better off using a terminal program. [SLE] K panel

Hi everyone. Just installed the iMac kde 1.1.2 theme (for no particular reason-don't like iMacs anyway) from the kde site but now I've got an awful blue apple icon where the K menu should be in the panel. I simply can't live with this apple menu icon. Changing themes does not help. The apple persists. Have also reinstalled the kde base system. How can I get my K icon back? HELP! I am trying to set up my XNTP Clock, but am confused as to WHAT command I need to give to make the correct "Soft Link" Do I need to Create Device < refclock-0 > and then type :- ln -s refclock-0 127.127.8.0 ? Below is the ntp.config section that is baffling me :- ___________________________________________ ## Radio and modem clocks by convention have addresses in the ## form 127.127.t.u, where t is the clock type and u is a unit ## number in the range 0-3. ## ## Most of these clocks require support in the form of a ## serial port or special bus peripheral. It was not labeled a winmodem either. I believe that what Michael was inferring, is that there are almost no PCI modems that work with Linux. This seems to be due to most PCI modems being Winmodems. What is the make and model of your modem? There is the off chance that it might be a "real" modem (one with a complete chipset), but chances are it isn't. Most people on this list will tell you to get either an external modem, or an ISA modem. Questions similar to this tend to come up every couple of weeks on this list and the person asking usually seems to wind up purchasing a new modem (external or one of the old USR ISA modems). Check the Hardware DB on the SuSE site. This will give you a list of modems that are known to work with Linux. Not to say that others won't, just the ones listed have been proven/reported to work. [SLE] freash 6.3 install

Well i did a freash install of 6.3 after some problems i finally have it up and running. The upgrade from 6.1 didn't work. I got SCSI bus errors and had to do a clean install. couldn't compile the kerenl with out errors till i took out the block device for loop back then it would compile. PPPD still times out on the connection if no activity. This never happened in 6.1. It seems the newer the distro, the more problems i have getting X to work with my video and moniter. I have ATI 3D Expersion vid card with 4megs on it and a old moniter. I did get it to work fine in 6.1 by copying over my old XF86Config from a Caldera install. but 6.3 it just won't work any more. On the good side. This was the first time i've been ablr to get sound to work with out any hassle.
