[SuSE Linux] First Installation

Greetings, I have recently purchased and installed SuSE Linux 6.1. I have never had any experience with Linux or Unix, just Dos and Windows. The question I have is: Is there a partticular Howto or manual out there that could help me set up a NT-like server with all the settings set-up (File/Print-sharing, Firewall, Proxy, Intranet, Mail, etc.). I would like to use dial-up networking to download my mail, then distribute my mail locally to all the relevant users, any help? [SuSE Linux] Problems with YaST update using FTP

Hi list, I'm a linux newbie, but really enjoying it so far! This list has been great for lurking, but now I have 2 questions for all you gurus (as much as possible, please be specific with your answers - thanks!): 1) How do you set up YaST to update and install via FTP rather than CD? No matter what directory I use as the start directory on ftp.suse.com, I get the following message in the output window: Connecting to ftp.suse.com[209.81.41.5] Check server directory... 550 /pub/SuSE-Linux/suse: No such file or directory. File not found on server 550 /pub/SuSE-Linux/CD1/suse: No such file or directory. File not found on server 550 /pub/SuSE-Linux/cd1/suse: No such file or directory. File not found on server Server directory is invalid! Closed connection to ftp.suse.com[209.81.41.5] Settings faulty! It seems to be looking for the file: suse but it doesn't seem to be anywhere on the server. i have applied the update to yast (by downloading and using rpm) but nothing changed. I have tried almost all the possible directories on the ftp server (which i can connect to no problem with netscape). I have an ADSL connection with the DHCP client installed. it works fine with netscape. My service requires the use of a proxy for http connections but not ftp. 2) This is the really dumb question: How do you apply the patch to the kernal to go from 2.2.5 to 2.2.7? I tried to do it using rpm, but nothing seemed to change. I also went through the kernal config and compilation utility in fvwm2, but I still see the version 2.2.5 message on boot. [SuSE Linux] How does SuSE stack up as a desktop distribution?

Hi, Thanks for the advice, the card was autodetected and yast had no trouble setting it up. The specifics for reference: The card is a model EC2T and has connections for 10baseT and 10base2, it uses the pcnet_cs driver. I had a little trouble, I got an error of SIOCADDRT: Operation not supported by device This is apparently caused by route being called from inetd and trying to set the route information. It seems the pcmcia service handles this as the route is set correctly. Thanks again and sorry about the extra <cr><lf> in the sig last time (someone was having a bit of fun) Tim P.S. [SuSE Linux] Elsa Synergy II card

Hi list, I am looking at the Elsa Synergy II for my home box and I was wondering whether anyone on the list has any information about compatibility problems. Since it is a fairly new card using the TNT2 chipset perhaps not many people have it yet. Therefore, I should like to broaden my inquiry about SuSE compatibility with regards to the TNT2 chip. [SuSE Linux] Latest Kppp

Hello All, I have downloaded the latest version of Kppp in the hope that it will help my connection problem. The file I have got is kppp-1.6.14.tar.bz2, but I have no idea of how to install this file? Can someone give me some pointers please? [SuSE Linux] Sybase Install:SYB_BACKUP failing to start

Hi, I am trying to configure Sybase that comes on the 6.1 CD's. I run the install.sh script and get about 3/4 of the way done to the point where the program tries to start the backup server. It fails there with a "Unable to start SYB_BACKUP". Anyone on SuSE seen this? I believe I have followed the example setup in the packages/doc/sybase/howto to the tee, but no luck. I've gotten on sybase site and looked around, but the fixes there do not apply. I am going to search Usenet and the web further, and maybe re-install from Yast. For the record, I am on SuSE 6.1, kernel 2.2.10, ide drives. Thanks.
