[SuSE Linux] how to get pcmcia network autosense to work?

[SuSE Linux] adding a diff to xf86.spec (riva/tnt)

Is it ok to simply add the diff to the source package of X? I simply added the 3.3.3.1 diff to the spec file (difff #4) and it seemed to compile corectly. I was just wondering if there is some danger when doing this. Next I'll be doing the same thing for mesa. Also how can I tell if it actually compiled correctly? X seems a bit snappier but I'm not sure if it's because i expect it to. There really does seem to be a difference in the time it takes KDE to load. I guess I'll be able to test mesa with xscreensaver once I'm done compiling. thanks, rimez p.s. [SuSE Linux] Operating Under the SuSE Rescue System

I recently posted a message complaining about not being able to operate my SCSI tape drive under the rescue system. I should have gone into more detail. Sure the SCSI tape module must be loaded. There is a problem, however, when your file system is mounted under /mnt. Certain commands simply do not work even though they are in the path. When I issue 'insmod st', the message is: bash:/mnt/sbin/insmod: No such file or directory Note that this is not the same as "command not found" and, moreover, it does not help to give the full path to the module st.o. I get a like message when I say e.g. 'emacs whatever'. Yet other commands work normally. [SuSE Linux] Where to Put 'depmod -a'?

I've read documentation saying to put the statement /sbin/depmod -a in a nonexistent file and other documentation sayind to put it in "some rc file" in /etc/init.d. Well where *exactly* is a good place to put it? [SuSE Linux] OK, Let's start out slowley this time: How to build a kernel or the alternatives?

I posted a number of questions and sincerely appreciate all the responses. You guys are great! Let me state again that I am a ultra-mega-newbie. What I am about to request help on scares the @#$0ut of me. My situation: 1) I boot from an IDE drive. I have a tray/cassette arrangement that allows me to have a whole IDE drive dedicated to whatever OS I an working on. 2) I have SCSI peripherals such as an HP 4c scanner, Pioneer multi-CD-ROM changer, A Pinnacle Micro RCD-5020, and a Pinnacle Micro Ultra 5.2. What I think I need to do for starters is to build the standard IDE kernel, the one I can select from the list under YAST, and just add SCSI support to it so I can access all my other devices. How do I accomplish this? Again, I will not be booting from SCSI but from a IDE drive, but need SCSI support for my devices. I assume I need to rebuild my kernel, if I don't I would be happy to hear the alternatives. By the way, I have the 2.2.5 load. With all the banter I don't know if it makes a difference or not. i've been running both 2.2.9 and 2.3.3 on my laptop, they seem equalably stable. [SuSE Linux] vgalib nonsense

Dear SuSE folk: Has anyone on this list solved the vgalib for SuSE 6.0 with 2.0.36 kernel? By that, I mean has anyone been able to make games like abuse and doom work? When I try to run any of these kinds of games, I get an error message concerning vgalib.so.1 and the games won't run. The offending file is a dynamic lib to vgalib.so.1.3.0 or something like that... Any help sincerely appreciated. Oh and BTW, does anyone know how to set up quake in Linux so it doesn't require root privileges to run? [SuSE Linux] QT development under SUSE 6.1

hello, I have installed 6.1 and the KDE update 1.1.1 and the qtdevelopment update. I am having trouble compiling a helloworld type program. All it does if seg fault. I had tried to develop with egcs but could never get anything to compile, so I switched to gcc and gccfront. Now the code compiles but will not execute. Has anyone had any success with QT 1.44 and SuSE 6.1. Are you using egcs or gccfront. Do you have a sample of your compile line. I would really like to get this going. I have tried for quite some time now to get my modem to work under linux, but I have failed. When I do a 'Query Modem' under 'Configuration/Modem' in kppp I get an message like this: Sorry, the modem is busy. [SuSE Linux] SuSE 6.0 and PPP (fwd)

It seems this posting didn't make it through. Second try. Since I've updated from 5.3 to 6.0 I've got a problem with dialin PPP (not dialout!). My setup: +----------+ ethernet | | -----------------+ Box A +----------PPP (dialin!) | | +----------+ A runs quite some services. Amoung them, it is a PPP server with just one modem attached. The modem is for staff so they can dialin from home, get their mail,... The routing table is OK, the arp table has an entry for the ppp0 device pointing correctly to eth0. Since the upgrade to 6.0 packets from ppp0 aren't forwarded to eth0 any longer and vice versa. (checked it with tcpdump running on both devices) First I thought the vanilla kernel shipping with 6.0 might be compiled without forwarding/gatewaying enabled. Unfortunately, after having compiled the kernel myself the problem persists. :-( Is this a known problem? Maybe a bug *shudder* in that particular kernel (2.0.36)?
