I get problems also when using xsvga-3.3.3.3 with an nVidia 128 zxv. Maybe its NOT the hardware but the driver. Any smart cookies out there? His methods may have been too harsh, but it's function was precise. Linux is not Windows. Linux is made to do more. Much more. Windows is not(in my opinion). Windows is made for people who don't want to have to worry about security on the internet. Which is good for people who want to use Windows. Linux you have to do yourself and learn yourself. I definately have done both of those in the last couple of days. If newbies looked at my postings and thought that not using a root password (or using root period) was the way to go, then they and many other people would have been in harms (or hackers) way. I actually did deserve the flames that I got. I was pretty lazy about not using a root password. This list is probably the best I've been associated with, even though some people get aggitated with stupid questions. I've done it myself. I have a few Unix servers at work and they don't have access to the Internet, so I really don't know much about Internet security. I have definately learned a ton in the last couple of days. I guess thanks to people here smacking me on the head a few times. I will start treating my machine more like I treat my work machines, and will get me a book or look up some info on security. I do have a hard time with the difference between my home systems and my work systems when it comes to giving someone advice. They are completely different systems and are setup that way also. My work systems are secure/home is not(well, more now anyways) my work systems do not see untested or uncommercial software, my home system sees all. My work system never sees the root account, my home system always does. With the spectrum being so different, it is hard for me to give someone advice on what they should do. I guess being safe is better than being sorry. [SuSE Linux] suse problems or linux problems

I'm considering getting started with Linux. I wonder if the active suse list with so many user problems is the result of the suse distribution or is the difficulty with Linux itself? I understand that either way I'll have to put in a significant amount of study and work to try something other than the DOS/Windows I'm used to. Thank you. [SuSE Linux] lilo and NT on a second disk drive

Need some help here. I have a second hard disk drive with NT installed. This used to be my first drive but I now would like to place it in the /dev/hdb honored position. This drive used to boot linux and NT using the NT+Linux NT bootloader approach. I would now like to get lilo to boot this drive. It has NT 4 ws installed already with a bunch of junk on it. Is this as simple as editing lilo.conf to point to that location? Any gotchas with this? The drive is formatted as NTFS and has the boot loader active. I read a few of the howto's and the approach seems to be to list in lilo.conf and then run /sbin/lilo. Is this it? -- Michael E. I do administer a large lan running AIX and SCO. I take that very seriously. It is VERY secure. I never use the root account and change the password quite frequently. My Linux box on the other hand is just a play toy. The reason I use it verses Windows is that I just plain love Unix. I use the root account on it constantly. I don't have any security set up on it. The reason? I don't really DO anything with it. Web site here, web site there. Install programs and listen to MP3's. I just happened to try out IRC and found out something about a security problem on my Linux box. I don't think that it is a crime to share my experience with someone else. I really didn't expect to get chastised by other members about it either. Maybe your system needs to be administered tightly, but mine doesn't. And all I gave was a suggestion, not a command. If someone doesn't like it, simply don't follow it. But really, securing your machine if your going to use IRC is not saying that IRC is the evil of the internet and is the only way someone can gain access to your machine. I was just sharing my experiences. Forgive me. I will never post on this list again. I don't know what I doing and I will have to quit my job of the last five years because I can't administer a simple Unix/Linux LAN, which I've been doing very successfully. The driver that's included is not the most up to date. I've downloaded the patches to the AIC7xxx driver from the RedHat FTP site and have version 5.1.4 of the AIC7xxx driver working. My system is run 24x7 and has been very stable. Have you tried doing a <CTRL>-A and checked the setup of the 2490 card? I suggest setting the termination on the card to "Auto" so the card will auto terminate. Since you don't have anything connected to the external connector, the card should be be terminated since it's at one end of the SCSI chain. Also make sure that whatever device you have at the end of the cable is also terminated properly. The latest version of the driver is 5.1.6 and it can be found at: ftp.dialnet.net in /pub/linux/aic7xxx or at ftp.redhat.com in /pub/aic. I find it very difficult to get into RedHat's FTP site and as far as I can tell, the /pub/aic directory is not on any of the RedHat mirror sites.
