[SuSE Linux] System.map revisited.

Awhile ago I asked a question about a mismatch between my newly compiled kernel, and the system.map. One of the Suse experts said that the system.map was inconsequential. [SuSE Linux] Window Maker 0.50.1 fails under SuSE 5.3 ?

[SuSE Linux] Chat + USR Modem reaaaaally bugging me!

I'm finally able to use both kppp and wvdial successfully with my USR Sportster Flash modem (v90) but its really bugging me that I am totally unable to get CHAT to work... When I run chat, and believe me I've tried just about every INIT string I can think of, I get zero reaction from the modem - no blinking of lights or result codes - and chat just times-out.... But it occurs to me - how does chat know which port to address?? (cos' I think maybe it doesn't??) Does it simply use /dev/modem or what? There is nothing In can find in the man page - on the USR site - or in the serial or PPP Howto's. All the documentation I've seen seems to assume that if you can dial-out okay using minicom or kermit, then chat must work too... Minicom works 100% - and even if I use it to initialise the modem, then exit minicom without resetting, chat still fails. Is anyone able to throw some light on this please?? I've wasted days fiddling with this and hate to be defeated! I didn't have mine secure because, I really don't care, if it gets distroyed then I just simply re-install it. [SuSE Linux] IBM ThinkPad 760EL

Can someone point me in the right direction on setting up an IBM ThinkPad 760EL w/ 5.2 & KDE? <p>On this box, NT gets a nice 800x600x256 mode but I can't even get good fonts with Linux. I have been to the laptop support web, but found it a bit confusing with all the other notebook specs in there. Hello All, Thanks dizzy, I've tried the way you told me , and it doesn't work, I think the named daemon isn't running. Can you tell me the entry of the named daemon in the inetd.conf file? I haven't found the daemon runnning neithor top nor ps show it. Hi all; As all of you know (that have been using WP8) it has a spelling and grammer checker. WP underlinesthen with either blue or red. This almost drove my wife mad before a friend told me how to turn it off. Now she suggests another color. She wants to add the "non-Politically correct" checker! Any non-PC words would be underlined in green and WP would suggest the more PC word. In fact WP could be programmed not to use some non-PC words for any reason. Some of the words would be: NON-PC PC Chairman Chairperson "N"-word Black / Colored (etc) I would go on, but you get the idea. How about everybody adding their best-loved PC word. Then we'll send them all to Coral and see about it being added to WP9. LATER! [SuSE Linux] Recommendatiosn for low mem/slow machines?

I recently got an old 386 with 4M ram and decided to put Linux on it. The HD it came with was only 80M which was too small, so I tried a 1G drive and set the CMOS type (it has no auto or user entries ) to type 60 which would give me 220M. Strangely the Suse 5.3 boot disk sees it as a 1G drive and so far has had no problems using it's full capacity. The problem I have now is that it is extremely slow, which I expected - but I was wondering if anybody had any suggestions of changes I can make to speed it up (apart from upgrade the HW). I installed Suse via NFS 2 days ago and so far it is as par as yast finishing up with 'setting up Perl'. I intend to modularise the kernel to minimise memory it uses and stop http/squid e.t.c running. Would it be better to use Suse 5.2 instead of 5.3?? is it smaller?
