Hi, the ide interface on soundblasters is (almost) like any other. the first thing is to make sure it is enabled in the first place, use the jumpers or the pnp software from <A HREF="http://www.creaf.com/"><A HREF="http://www.creaf.com/</A">http://www.creaf.com/</A</A>> then you want to set the card to irq 15, not 14 (secondary ide). if it is a pnp card, linux may have a problem, unles linux can see the ide interface at boot up. if you do have to use the isapnp tools to turn it on, then you may not be able to do it. Any one else have a SB64? this is from my experiance with soundblasters. the older cards with jumpers are much nicer. You just have to expirment a bit. I loaded up a BIG installation 1st and ran out of HD space ( Over 1 Gig!) so backed off, started again & installed from scratch again. Some things fell into line after I had done it a couple of times. Do I understand why some things are done as they are, no. Do I care, YES. But, even if a newbie would have trouble, you seem to have done enough other installations that it will soon come to you. Bottom line, I prefer Slackware, as I don't like Installation managers that say they do it all, and don't. SuSE isn't perfect, yet, but im my mind I would do this again over RedHat 5 times to sunday. I have only been using this for a week and I like the challenge more on this distribution then on any of the others. It took me less time to make SuSE work (somewhat) than I spent on RedHat or Debian. I'll take the good with the bad and stay plugging away st SuSE. The support is better then I ever saw from redhat and this list has as much information as the Debian list. Stay cool and keep at it. German engineering has always been good and I think that SuSE Linux may just prove that the Software guys over there Know what they are doing. Let me know if I can be of any assistance. By that I mean that it is a desktop option selectable under other window managers. However, it is brain dead as far as the other packages that I have installed. I think that KDE is a work environment in itself -- it has its' own mail. news, browser etc. I still had to access that suse packages from a term from the kde desktop. Hope that this all sheds some light on this for you. Can't be more specific right now as I am on FreeBSD, but if you have some specifics, I can reboot to SuSE. Chris, In the case of an rpm the installation is 'rpm -ihv package.rpm' or 'rpm -Uhv package.rpm' if it is an upgrade. It is wise, however to install the package easy in the a1 set of packages on the first cdrom. (the exact path is /cdrom/suse/a1/easy.rpm). This package builds symbolic links that accomodate the expected locations for rpms and tarballs obtained via downmloads. Sorry for this question, but Im trying to learn the operation of Yast. Example: Say I download a program in rpm format (eg: KDE beta 3.1)and download it to a directory in /root/download. Can I use Yast to install and configure the program and if so how? Or must this be undertaken by hand? Currently I have installed several programs, netscape 3.0.4, Communicator 4.0.4, ezppp and StarOffice4.0. However all of these programs have been installed by hand so to speak with help from on line doumentation. Was wondering if Yast can be used to undertake this process instead.
