Hello, I am trying to open Apple iPhone 'File.HEIC' types. I discovered by installing GIMP 2.10.24 on my openSUSE TW computer (all updated-to current), that I can now open and then export an HEIC image-file into a format now readable (by Okular and Gwenview) through Dolphin. I saved this particular testing file to the pc previously. I didn't know before that by installing and using Gimp that I could then export the "HEIC" file types. I don't own an iPhone it's actually a aquaintance's. (So it's not super easy to do the mounting of the device for testing). I followed an article here a bit and did have success in mounting the phone previously (Per login Instance basis, not permanent across powercycle). https://www.dedoimedo.com/computers/linux-iphone-6s-ios-11.html Do some users have opinions on how to go about mounting an iPhone more easily? How far off or difficult is it to make openSUSE able to mount iPhones more easily or what is the preferred method now? What is the preferred app for viewing these "HEIC" file types? For instance taking photos with iPhone then using the pc to more easily create adds for selling items online. I wanted to include some software information also if that could help. Hi Folks, I've got a little problem here that I bet someone here could handle. I've got a couple of thousand zip files that some knuckle-headed package created that have to be unpacked for inspection. They're named with a long date-time group with the .zip extension, as in Fri-Apr-30-185859-PDT-2021-logfile.zip Alas, they all unpack to the same filename: logfile So what's the easiest way to unzip them all and add the date-time string to the resultant logfile name so that they all don't unpack to the same filename and step on each other. Awk maybe? A clever pipeline with xargs? Or? Regards, Lew

google borked

I generally use google with javascript disabled, to reduce their ability to track me. I noticed today that their site no longer displays correctly. If I disable their CSS as well and scroll down past lots of junk oversize icons etc, I eventually can see some search results. Even better, the search results are direct links with no google redirection embedded. So good news, but mostly bad news. Does anybody know anything about what is going on? And is anybody aware of any tools to make such google results usable again? Yes, the likes of duckduckgo or startpage give me some functionality, but not as much as I had yesterday with google + noscript. :(

su with xauth and display

How does opensuse automatically set the xauth and DISPLAY when using su? I'd like to do the same thing with debian. Also, I remember long ago there used to be a way to run an x-server in an x-window. I think it was called zephyr but this seems to be an entirely different thing now. Does anyone remember or know a way?

openSUSE devs, Don't know if the powers that be are up on this, but quite alarming and I still can't figure out how to test for it. Apparently corrupt versions of systemd-daemon and gvfsd-helper have been used -- for years. https://www.theregister.com/2021/04/29/stealthy_linux_backdoor_malware_spot… Any body got more on this? -- David C. Recognized but unusable hp 1109w printer on Leap 15.2 up to date

Setup in yast or hplip both see and recognize printer but all text pages and attempts to use this printer fail. I have followed the usual methods and was able to install another older printer which works to a degree random out of paper faults on older printer. I tried different usb ports and still no go. I have no idea what to try next. The ppd files are installed. boot fail on 15.3 rc zypper dup

Just a word to say that I did a zypper dup to update my 15.3 home server. probably to Rc version, given the date. At the end it asked to reboot, what I did, but the reboot didn't succeed, ended with a file not found grub error, a "mod" file missing (don't remember which) I could reboot on the usb pen with 15.3 image, in rescue mode and chroot in actual 15.3, use yast to rewrite the grub system and now it works nothing very special, just a warning jdd -- http://dodin.org

I have finished sticking needles into my Office365 voodoo dolls, someone in Seattle will have been writhing in pain. I know, I known, but it feels _really_ good. I am about to go watch "Line of Duty", I'm totally hooked. At openSUSE, tonight someone crashed the galera cluster, unfortunately nothing much I can do. It seems to be myself and cboltz "on duty". In between, I've been listening to David Gilmour playing old Pink Floyd stuff, I can never tire of that.
