[opensuse] Tar not restoring symlinks

Hi all. I have had a disk failure on a server today. So I replaced the disk with a new SSD and when I am trying to tar my files back from last night's tape the symlinks are not restored. I am getting an empty file where the symlink is supposed to be!! I have run: tar -tvf /dev/st0 > tar.txt and I can see the symlinks are saved on the tape. I am restoring using: tar -xvf /dev/st0 and I have tried tar -xhvf /dev/st0 I have tried extracting with -h too as shown here but the symlinks are still restored as empty files! https://www.golinuxhub.com/2013/12/how-to-preserve-symbolic-links-with-tar.… Can anyone help me please? [opensuse] installing Gimp 2.10 on OS 15.1 failed (or: how to get webp for gimp?)

Hello, I need to be able to read and safe webp graphics in gimp. I am on Opensuse 15.1 and that comes with gimp 2.8 which doesn't support this format, it is (as I read) included from Gimp 2.9. I found oneclick install for Gimp 2.10 for OS 15.1. Tried it. It failed because libmypaint-1.4 cant be found. I installed without, but then Gimp doesn't start. I searched for libmypaint - found oneclick 1.5.1 - tried, but it didn't install because of an rpm error. 1.4.0 is only available for OS 15.2 (haven't tried to install it, should I - on 15.1?) my questions: - How can I install Gimp 2.10 on 15.1 and resolve the missing libmypaint-1.4? - or alternatively: how can I make Gimp 2.8 to handle webp graphics? [opensuse] Icons gone!

Hi--In just a few minutes, including 2 reboots to OpenSUSE TW, I have lost my screen icons for a number of apps, to wit: Brasero, Qsynth, LMMS, QjackCtl, ConvertAll, Google Earth, FreeOffice 2018 Textmaker, FreeOffice 2018 Planmaker, Thunderbird and Firefox. Is there any easy way to get them back? Or is there a harder way? I tried sending FreeOffice 2018 Textmaker to Trash and replacing it from the task list (the black thing in the lower left corner) but that didn't work. As you can tell, the names of the apps are still in place on the screen. I am not averse to dragging the icons back one by one, if necessary, but I don't know how. [opensuse] Firefox 60+ Input Sizing Fixes?

All, This is a continuing frustration that I would like to find a solution for. With firefox ~60+ all the input boxes are 2-3 times there normal size. This makes for some pretty comical page renderings, e.g. https://paste.opensuse.org/86155530 Node the City, St input is roughly 3X it's normal size and bleeds over into surrounding elements. (the button is about 50% larger than it was) I know this is a Gtk+3 problem that moved the normal sizing of all widgets to the theme. However a year plus later there still isn't a fix. I have Adwaita icon theme which is about the only Gtk+3 theme in town, but still these problems persist. How can we make sure that pages render correctly with the current Firefox? For 10 years all the inputs looked like they belonged where they were put. Now the inputs on pages look like they were put together by some junior high school kiddo following his first "Intro To HTML" tutorial. What can be done to fix this? (having the user hack a special exception for every page on the internet in userContent.css isn't a solution...) -- David C. Hi, all -- OK, so Istvan's question reminded me of a question I had which, I confess, I haven't yet researched. As noted, I like UTC, and I even like my machines to think in UTC (if I want something to happen while I sleep, I can math and set it up properly), but I'm lazy enough that I want the clock in the corner of my screen to show EST or EDT depending on the season. When I set up my 15.1 machine recently, I told it I'm in America/NewYork (or some similar name that is geography-based), but ... that meant that the system ran its cron jobs in EST/EDT, too. I have since gone into settings and told it UTC, and it obediently shows UTC on my screen *and* runs cron jobs (and writes logs, and ...) in UTC; yay. But ... How can I set up my environment so that KDE shows me US/Eastern (whether Standard or Daylight, of course) and someone else who's based on the west coast US/Pacific and such all without messing up the system time? If this were just a shell question, I'd set & export $TZ and be done, but the GUI seems tied into the system settings. When accessing this repo in, say, zypper: https://download.opensuse.org/repositories/devel:/languages:/python/openSUS… does anyone else get this error? Download (curl) error for 'http://lnxrelease-02/yum/stable/main/binary-x86_64/repodata/repomd.xml': Error code: Connection failed Error message: Could not resolve host: lnxrelease-02 The URL does indeed look strange. I deleted the repo and added it again, and it made no difference. [opensuse] chroot of a JeOS openSYSTE 15.1 install

I am doing a little experimenting with running openSUSE in a chroot jail. I'm basically after a compiler environment. I have been doing this with a couple versions of openSUSE and it works quite well. I have just tried setting this up in a slightly different way, and I have encountered a strange thing. I want to be sure I have not overlooked anything. I have unpacked the contents of the JeOS KVM image for 15.1 (current download) to a directory. I am unpacking it this way because I do not really need the cow file. I'm just after a minimal install to get things going. The chroot directory is exactly the tree in the cow file. Just in a directory instead of a cow file. I can chroot into the directory and do lots of things (having first mounted the system's /dev, /proc and /sys folders, and copying the system's /etc/resolv.conf). I can install software with zypper (the stuff I will need to be able to compile things). Here is the strange thing: If I add a package with zypper, it installs fine. zypper continues to know that the package is installed. The package functions as expected. If I ask rpm about the package, it does not think it is installed. Why would the two programs not have the same idea about what is installed? I have never installed software into a chroot directory that contains a complete openSUSE install. So maybe this is how it has always been. I'm not sure where to start looking. I guess I can stick to using zypper and skip looking at rpm. But something worries me about this.
