[opensuse] Icons still gone
As requested, I detailed the situation leading up to the loss of icons in a separate message. I don't know how the icons are attached to the application names on the KDE screen, but there should be some way to reattach them. If there is not a blanket fix, I am willing to do each one separately until I get them all back. Someone will have to tell me how. Please help. --doug -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

open the files in ~/Desktop - you'll find entries like Icon=xterm_badge-symbolic in there. Check, if these icons are still existing on your machine. Probably the icon theme doesn't contain them any longer.

This should be highly unlikely, all applications install an icon to a fallback location (/usr/share/pixmaps or /usr/share/icons/hicolor) and all the major desktops and toolkits will fallback to searching there if they do not find the icon on there own. openSUSE has checks to ensure packages are doing this. -- Simon Lees (Simotek) http://simotek.net Emergency Update Team keybase.io/simotek SUSE Linux Adelaide Australia, UTC+10:30 GPG Fingerprint: 5B87 DB9D 88DC F606 E489 CEC5 0922 C246 02F0 014B

Looked at /usr/share/pixmaps: found icon for "tml18free.png, which was the icon for TextMaker18 free, but not any other missing icons. under /usr/share/icons, see only icons for Fossamail.png and lightscribe.png, both of which are on screen. There is no file /usr/share/icons/hicolor. --doug -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

That seems to be the case. I have "Desktop" open in Dolphin, and there are just gray outlines shown where the necessary icons should be, i.e., next to convertall, google-earth, lmms, planmaker-free, qjackctl, and so on. Is there a way that a full set of icons can be thrown at it? Of course, some of the files are not found in the Suse repos, like the free-office set.

Go into Configure Desktop > Desktop Behaviour > Virtual Desktops. In there you can configure how many you want. The default is two, I have four. You can switch between them with Ctrl - Fx. With virtual desktops you can have different things, perhaps task related, on their own desktop. For example, I usually have a Windows 10 virtual machine on 2 and National Geographic magazine, opened full screen, on 3. However, as I mentioned, switching between desktops has no effect on the icons. In fact, assuming you had nothing open, you can't tell which desktop you're looking at by the icons. They all have exactly the same icons, in exactly the same locations. The only way you could tell which desktop is open is by the desktop switcher on the task bar. Looking at it right now, I see I'm on desktop 1 and it's indicated by a blue colour. Desktops 2 & 3, which have something open are dark grey and 4, which isn't being used, is light grey. In addition to using the key combination, you can click on that desktop switcher to select the desktop you want to open or click on the app, on the task bar, that's on that desktop. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

They are retrieved from a system level. A thing you can try, is re-setup your plasma: - Logout - Cltr+Alt+F2 - Login with usersname and password - mv ~/.config/plasma* ~/.config/oldplasmaconfig - Ctrl-D to logout - Ctrl+Alt+F7 to login, you now see the stock plasma desktop. - Right click the desktop, Properties - Set it to show the ~/Desktop folder. -- Gertjan Lettink a.k.a. As a long shot let us know the output of "env | grep QT" if Qt can't decide which style it should be using it will show no Icons, in a kde system this should just detect kde without anymore help from you, but i'd have to go read the code again to figure out what the actual test for KDE is. -- Simon Lees (Simotek) http://simotek.net Emergency Update Team keybase.io/simotek SUSE Linux Adelaide Australia, UTC+10:30 GPG Fingerprint: 5B87 DB9D 88DC F606 E489 CEC5 0922 C246 02F0 014B

To be honest, your system seems to be far from a default install. If I start Konsole, it starts as my user, not as root. The new user has the icons, so they are on the system. Every time you begin with root permissions, which you shouldn't. To be honest, your system seems to be far from a default install. If I start Konsole, it starts as my user, not as root.
I was as surprised as you are that Konsole starts as root. For the most part, it hasn't been a problem, altho perhaps now it is. If you have a suggestion to make the Konsole start as user, I'll try it out. But first, I'd like to get the icons back!

doug No, no no. You should not even start Konsole with root permissions.
Are you sure your desktop is not running as root? Try using "xterm" instead of "konsole". If it doesn't exist, install it. Then run "ls -l" and post the result here. - -- Cheers, Carlos E. R. system complains: contains unprintable characters
--doug
That means you typed it wrong. Copy the command from the email, hit Alt+F2, type Konsole, start it and paste the command with Ctrl-Shift-v
Did exactly as requested (first moving Konsole to user doug, as mentioned previously)
Got the message about unprintable characters. The box had the option to apply, so clicked on apply. As far as I know, nothing happened. Here's the input sequence:
Password: linux-4qnb:~ # su - doug doug@linux-4qnb:~> rm ~/.cache/icon-cache.kcache doug@linux-4qnb:~>

To be honest, your system seems to be far from a default install. If I start Konsole, it starts as my user, not as root. The new user has the icons, so they are on the system. Every time you begin with root permissions, which you shouldn't. Open Dolphin as your user, NO ROOT permissions, from the View menu set it to show hidden files and folders, enter ~/.cache and remove the file icon-cache.kcache
I started Dolphin from the screen, from the 3-bar icon at the top right I set it to show hidden files. In the search box, (Magnifying glass, top right) I put ~/.cache Nothing appears anywhere I look. What am I missing this time?
--doug
I found the .cache hidden file. WITHIN IT I found a .cache file, (on a dark gray background) and I removed it. I still have none of the missing icons on my desktop. What now?
--doug I'm sorry Doug, but this is a mess. I did not tell you to remove a .cache file, but to enter the ~/,cache folder and remove the icon-cache.kcache file.
Logour, hit Ctrl-Alt-F2 and login with your username and password ( NOT ROOT ). Then do: mv ~/.config ~/.config.old Hit Ctrl-Alt-F7 and login. You should see the same as the new user, so Icons for Home and Trash and a startmenu with icons. First report if that happens. If so I can help you to have the desktop show your Desktop folder. -- Gertjan Lettink a.k.a. I probably loused it up again. I'm sorry I'm such a Dummkopf! I appear to be logged in as user doug, not the new user. If I open Dolphin, I see a screen of dot files, including .donfig, many of which are the names of files that were on the original screen, and some of which are the names of files that I lost the icons for, and then some of which are NOT dot files, nor are they files from the original desktop, like Music, Pictures, Public, etc.,and another directory that was not on the desktop. --dummkopf ~/,config is a folder, not a file. And yes, they are the contents of your / home/doug . So it's normal you see Music, Documents etc. But I'm not going to do anything anymore until you follow the instructions I gave re. removing the ~/.config folder whilst not logged in on the desktop.

you might as well take it off list if you can not be bothered to follow protocol and observe some modicum of courteousness. and as an elected representative of the openSUSE community, the example you show is very poor.
