[opensuse] valgrind - swapping with SSD locks machine during swap - bug or feature?

All, I think it was James that had a similar question, but at the time I had no context to compare it to. But I had an occurrence last night where running valgrind on a simple bit of code that allocated 4.5G causes the my box to swap. The machine was in hardlock during swap -- no mouse pointer movement, not keyboard control -- no nothing. I was contemplating a hard reset while I sat waiting... and waiting... and waiting (probably no more than 3 minutes -- but that provides a lot of time to think about whether you need to nuke it or not) I have had boxes swap hundreds and hundreds of times over the decades, but never had a box exhibit this "hard-lock" behavior before. I now valgrid sets up its own protected environment to do its work in, but I don't see why it swapping would have any worse of different impact on the system than anything else swapping (I just don't know -- but wouldn't expect it to) Is this a bug, a feature, a valgrind special environment issue? If I recall the earlier thread (there have been a couple - Why swap?, etc.. recently), James or whoever it was was seeing similar unresponsiveness during the swap. I ran into this answering a question on StackOverflow. With 8G of RAM total allocating 4.5 while you have a full desktop with a dozen or so tabs in Firefox, etc. will cause your box to swap. [opensuse] Adobe Flash still needed

[opensuse] keeping multiple kernels on ARM systems ?

I'm sure many have this feature enabled, just in case. Keeping multiple kernels and module versions around. On one of my ARM systems, yesterday I ran an update "zypper patch" (Leap 15.0), which installed a new kernel 4.12.14-lp150.12.82-lpae, the old one being 4.12.14-lp150.12.48-lpae. Both initrds were rebuilt, I have two kernels, two sets of modules - but my dtb was cleared out: /boot/dtb-4.12.14-lp150.12.48/ - empty apart from one file I had renamed to .old. I use my own DTB, but this did not prevent the system from booting, instead it did stop the network from coming up (wifi device not correctly defined in the openSUSE supplied DTB). I had to climb some 10meters up a ladder to retrieve the box, disassemble it and put a serial console on it :-) Question - the multiple kernels feature ought to have retained my dtb directory contents in /boot/dtb-4.12.14-lp150.12.48/ ? [opensuse] LXDE and XFCE4 power settings?

During the installation I selected LXDE as the desktop. I noticed that XFCE4 power settings were installed. Is that intentional? Are they supposed to work? [opensuse] Missing menu in libreoffice draw

I'm just trying to start using libreoffice draw. Leap 15.0 LO Version: 6.2.7.1 (yes I know it's old) The help for Arranging Objects says: "2. Choose Modify - Arrange ..." and searching the help reveals that Modify is supposedly a menu. But there is no Modify menu. Menus are: File Edit View Insert Format Page Shape Tools Window Help A quick web search hasn't shown anything helpful. Does anybody know how to fix this? I have been a devotee of Artha for probably more than 10 years, on several systems, and now I find it's GONE??? It worked up until a couple days ago. System: Tumbleweed. [opensuse] SMB1 Support

Hi I have an old computer which only supports SMB1 protocol. Is it possible to create a share in Samba and force that share to be SMB1? Would be good id I could also only allow this one client IP to connect to it if this is possible too? [opensuse] Desktop search in KDE on Tumbleweed

I'm new to both Opensuse and KDE and I'm trying to get my head around the file content search capabilities of KDE and Baloo (running in a fresh install of Tumbleweed). Is anyone familiar with Baloo in KDE on Tumbleweed? In particular at the moment, my requirements/expectations are: (1) Dynamic indexing of new file content and changed file content. I'd expect this to be almost instant on a freshly installed system with only a few files. (2) Search of arbitrary files types from the GUI. On point (1): I've successfully set Baloo to index file contents and it can do so when forced (which I've been able to confirm using the "balooshow" command). However, Baloo doesn't seem to want to dynamically index new or changed files. For example, I create a new text file with some unique content, try to search the file contents from the KDE GUI, but the contents are not found until I issue a "balooctl check" command to force re-indexing. As far as I can see, Baloo is supposed to use a file system watcher to see file changes and re-index new/changed files dynamically but it doesn't seem to be doing it. If it is just waiting, how long do I have to wait? And can I increase its responsiveness? On point (2): Both Krunner and the search box on the KDE start menu appear to filter file types for which they return data but I can't see how to alter this. For example, I can create a text file (file.txt) and a HTML file (file.htm) in ~/Desktop, both containing the text "jabberwocky". If I then use "balooctl check" to make sure that they are both indexed, I can confirm that their contents have both been successfully indexed by using "balooshow -x file.txt" or "balooshow -x file.htm". These two commands correctly show the indexed words in the two files. If I use the "baloosearch jabberwocky" command it will correctly return the two files: "file.txt" and "file.htm". BUT, typing "jabberwocky" into either the KDE start menu's search box or Krunner will only list the text file, not the HTML file. In other words, it seems that the GUI is filtering the file types for which it interrogates the index. How can I force it to search for all file types unless I explicitly choose to filter them? I've not yet tested beyond text and HTML files types. If anyone can help me with this or point me to somewhere else to ask, I'd be really grateful. For what it's worth, my use case for this is as follows: I have a large collection (about 1.5 million files) of various document file types, including text, HTML, MHTML, PDF, DOC, DOCX, ODT, and various others, as well as some image file types that have embedded metadata (e.g. description text or tags). I currently use a different desktop search system to index and search these files and metadata and I'd like to migrate to Baloo under KDE. In principle, I know that Baloo can do all this but the details (e.g. dynamic index update) and GUI integration don't seem to be quite as transparent or smooth as I'd have expected. The desktop search system I currently use is Windows Search on Windows 10: It is extremely fast in both indexing (virtually instant for new/changed files with no noticeable effect on system speed) and search. Also the GUI integration is outstanding (available from the start menu and all file manager windows). However, I'd rather move from Windows to Linux. As I mentioned, I know that Baloo is capable of file content indexing/searching (and I think metadata too) but the actual implementation in KDE (at least as implemented on Tumbleweed) does seem to be lacking in smoothness, for want of a better word.
