[opensuse] Tape Drive Error Log Utility

Hi, Does anyone have the linux utility for resetting the error codes on tape drives? (I cannot recall the name) I have a drive with 'Error 5' on the LED display which means a hardware error. It was due to a stuck tape which has since been removed but the drive is still in an error state. I have been on the phone to quantum but they will not support my drive or not send me a copy of the utility. (Wish I had bought a HP with lifetime warranty now). [opensuse] Slightly OT, re: raspberry pi 3 - pretty darn amazing...

All, Here is a quasi-ot post (except for the thought that opensuse_pi would be nice). I don't post about just cool linux often, but if you haven't checked out the raspberry pi, it is a full computer with the footprint of a credit-card. I set one up for fun, and it runs an almost complete version of debian Jessie (rasbian) that is complete with a default LXDE desktop, LibreOffice, Chromium, a full blown development suite gcc/java, gigabit ethernet, a gig or RAM, usb, audio/mic, hdmi output, etc... It uses a SD card for storage, but beyond that, it could be a desktop/server replacement (albeit a bit slower than a gaming rig), it will happily run apache, bind, php, dhcp, etc.. Enough said. For the old-timers, it is a complete treat to work with a $35 computer ($50 with case, 2A power supply and SD card). Drawing less than 1A normally, you could get weeks of uptime from a UPS if you happened to lose power -- like forever. I've seen some posts regarding ARM versions of suse in the past. It would be equally fun to have a suse_pi version to go along with debian, arch, ubuntu, etc.. (there may even be one I haven't stumbled upon yet) Pretty cool... -- David C. Until now I have used SFLPhone but it was showing some age and the fact that the files on Opensuse buildservice has not been updated for quite some time now has been worrying. Now after update to LEAP, it can't install any more due to some library stuff. SuSEconfig has been gone for quite a while. I used to use it to add fonts via scripts. What is the correct method to add fonts (.ttf) these days? They are not in an RPM. And I do not want to run an interactive program. I googled a bit and did not see anything that addressed this. Bad search words, I guess. [opensuse] Epson Perfection 1260 Photo scanner not working with 42.2

I have an Epson scanner which worked until I upgraded to openSUSE 42.2, from 13.1. It no longer works. When I try to configure it in Yast Hardware, I see an Epson Scanner that's not configured and plustek, but it says "No scanner recognized by this driver". [opensuse] Mouse out of control under Tumbleweed

I have installed Tumbleweed for the second time. First time I did not have a problem with the mouse but I lost access to the internet and the system would not reboot hence the reinstall. I also have access to windows 10 on the same machine so I don't think it is a hardware problem. The basic problem is the mouse is erratic in that it leaves pointer trails on the desktop as well as flashing when I try to detect the edge of a window to expand it. I'm hoping someone can point be to a solution. I have no idea if it is a video driver problem or what. Thanks for any help. Up to this point openSUSE was quite reliable. I recently took up a position volunteering at an international school 3 times a week. All the staff here are volunteers, and as a result, we often have some holes in our knowledge. Since I began using openSUSE 5 years ago (my first and only Linux distribution that I experimented with) I have learned quite a bit, but some things were never necessary to learn. For example, Samba shares. I was not setting up an internal server in my house, so I didn't have any need to explore how to set up shared folders and drives. At the school where I volunteer, I work in the engineering department, not the IT department. So even though I am just a user of the network and not a sysadmin, I asked if my workstation could be openSUSE instead of windows, and they agreed, no problem, as long as I can for the most part work out all my own technical problems, since they mostly only know windows. The system here is like this. A few years ago we had someone come through in the IT department that set up the school's network on a linux server, CentOS, and set up samba folders for sharing on the network. It still runs, and those are all the shared drives on the network. As part of the engineering department, I need to access these shared drives and read the files, in particular the drawing files. When I set up my pc as a client for reading samba shares (I allowed samba services for both a server and a client in the firewall), I went into yast -> windows domain membership, and then set up the domain. Then I went to dolphin, clicked on the network icon, and searched through the samba shared folders. We found some of the network folders that came up, but not all. I had an IT guy come here and we were able to manually navigate to the network folder I need, which has the format of: smb://administrator username@servername/path With that format, I am able to access the folders, but only in dolphin and only by manually entering the long navigation path. I tried to set up a network drive with the network folder wizard in dolphin, but it is very difficult to figure out what goes in what field, and which part of the wizard to use. Do I connect via FTP? I read somewhere that samba clients on linux machines can connect to samba folders via ftp. Do I connect instead as if the samba folders are emulating a Microsoft Windows Network drive? In that one, it has fields for entering name, server, and folder. In the FTP, it has fields for entering name, user, server, port, and folder. I tried both, with various combinations of username, server name, path, etc. in the appropriate fields, and it is never able to create a network folder. However, I can still access the network folder in dolphin if I manually enter the folder string, as I noted above. BTW, I am using Leap 42.2 and KDE. [opensuse] Update on erratic mouse movement

It turns out that when I use IceWM instead of Plasma 5 the mouse problem goes away. I'm hoping someone can point me towards a solution. It has to be related to Plasma 5. Are there any controls with regard to the mouse under this window manager? In a prior post I had given some information about my system obtained for Yast. [opensuse] SAS/SCSI Hotplug

Hi, I have a couple of external tape drives. one SAS and the other SCSI. I do not wish to have these powered on at all times because they have very loud fans. I can turn them on and off easily as the drives have a power switch I can flip on when required, but the drives are not automatically detected again until reboot. lsscsi does not show them but after reboot it does. How can I configure the system to automatically re-detect these drives? Or perhaps a command that can be run before the backup script starts? I run LibreOffice Version: 5.2.3.3 Build ID: 20m0(Build:3) on openSUSE Leap 42.1 I just clicked on LibreOffice Help in the Help menu and discovered that it opened a web page instead of a help window. The web page is https://help.libreoffice.org/index.php?title=5.2/Common/Help&Language=en-US… and I can't figure out how to use it to get help! It seems to be some kind of overview/index but there doesn't seem to be any way to actually invoke help. How do I use it? The issue was trivial. The partition table was GPT and I was using fdisk to look at it. Once I used "gdisk -l" to look at the partition setup, I found I needed to mount partition 2. All, I routinely mount USB-3 drives to openSUSE. Normally to 13.1. I don't recall ever mounting anything over 4TB before. I'm in the field today and the only DVD I have with me is a 13.1 DVD. I bought a new Seagate 5TB USB-3 drive. It works in Windows 10 and I have put data on it. I can see the 5TB drive when I boot the PC in question from the openSUSE 13.1 DVD, but it fails to mount. Is there a known problem going over 4TB? Will it work if get a Leap 42.2 machine? (90 minutes round trip drive time to my office, thus the question). [opensuse] Programming F1 with twm or ctwm

I have two computers with an identical .ctwmrc, and it has this line: "F1" = : window : f.iconify On the first computer it works, pressing F1 iconifies a window, but on the second it doesn't work, it just makes the mouse cursor disappear for a second. Sometimes OP (an escape sequence?) appears in the xterm window (if that is the window targetted). This second computer did have a .Xmodmap but I renamed it. I rebooted the system after renaming .Xmodmap. I have found the same problem with twm. I changed the default window manager to twm, the default display manager to xdm, rebooted the system, created a new user, copied the .twmrc file, but still F1 didn't work. xev shows it is sending key 67 F1. I have tried plugging in a USB keyboard, but no difference. What's happening? HI I've had a console session open running 'top' and i switched to ctrl-alt-F7 to login to a graphical session. I put the password in, hit enter and switched back to the console to watch 'top'. My question is, why doesn't the graphical login proceed at normal pace to load the desktop? It seems to halt the login progress until i switch back to the graphical session. [opensuse] Leap 42.2 overwrote Win10 mbr on /dev/sda on grub update for SuSE on /dev/sdb

All, This was somewhat disturbing. I have 2 drives in my laptop, win10 on /dev/sda and Leap 42.2 on /dev/sdb. I boot either by selecting the drive I want to boot with the quick select bios boot option (e.g. press F9, the select hd1, hd2 of network boot) A couple of days ago, there was an update to grub2, and whatever hook is in place forced a grub reinstall. The problem is that grub installed to /dev/sda (writing itself to my win10 drive, instead of writing itself to my opensuse drive). This was quite surprising when I next tried to boot win10. Thankfully, grub detected and set up a chain-load for win10, but the issue is -- why would it touch /dev/sda, when it was booted from and running on /dev/sdb. I was able to recover/remove grub from /dev/sda with a call to bootsect, but I want to prevent this from ever happening again. I suspect part of the problem was the original installation of grub2 by yast and the creation of the archaic /boot/grub2/device.map containing '(hd0) /dev/sda' during install. I have rewritten device.map to contain (hd1) /dev/sda (hd0) /dev/sdb What I need to know is "Are there any other hooks or defaults in the way opensuse calls `grub-install` following a grub2 update that would cause it to write to /dev/sda instead of the drive opensuse is running on?" (after that we can get to 'why in the heck did an update to grub require a grub-install on a working system to begin with?' there was no kernel update or any change that would warrant a reinstall of grub to the drive) -- David C. Hello, Unfortunately, killing the database and restarting the scan did not end my baloo troubles. When I saved a docx document today it crashed again.
