[opensuse] troubleshooting 13.2 USB issues

I have a PC I use for USB work. Somehting like: mount /dev/sdb1 /mnt # mount the destination. cd /mnt dd if=/dev/sdc of=image-file.dd I've had it running with oS 13.1 for a while. I updated it to 13.2 recently and now it is extremely unreliable. Various HDD metadata queries are failing routinely (but not reliably). And often, when I start the dd (like) process, the kernel starts spitting out errors continuously. I'm forced to hold the power-off button to be able to interact with the laptop. This is a production machine (laptop) and I need that feature to be highly reliable, so I need to get it resolved fairly quickly. My thought is to treat 13.2 as a failed update, and go straight to Leap 42.1 now. Any recommendations pro/con that approach. [opensuse] LVM / software raid / dynamic raid? For a backup server of stable data.

This email might be offtopic, not sure. I have a minimum of 10 TB of data I want to consolidate off of multiple USB drives to free them up. The data is almost exclusively static and rarely accessed, but I need to maintain it. I have 2 copies of this data in most cases currently, but it is spread around multiple USB3 drives. (I have dozens of them). The plan for now is just to consolidate one copy of the data. I bought a 10 TB SATA drive to hold a first big chunk. I expect it will get filled quickly as I start to consolidate my backup copies, so I want to be able to grow the volume holding the data by adding disks to the pool and extending the volume. I suspect I will also want to have more resiliency at some point. (ie. raid 0 => raid 5 => raid 6) If I truly had confidence in this storage pool I might eliminate both copies of the data that is on USB drives currently. But even with raid 6, I think I would worry about a total LVM or Volume crash Or even a user error! Even though I know LVM and MDraid somewhat, I don't know if is "dynamic" and "reliable" enough for what I want. And advice out there? Goals: - Create a fileserver that I can add drives to from time to time and grow it's capacity. Probably 10TB drives so I don't have too many spindles in the mix. When bigger drives become available, I'd prefer to use them, so being stuck will all the same size drives is a negative. - Performance is non-critical. I've used LTO-4 tapes to do this in the past, but I hope online is a better choice now. With LTO-4, once I had a new data set (typically 100GB - 2TB) I would make a backup with tape and put it away for the time I needed to ensure I still had it. (Often years). - Share the exported volumes with Windows PCs. (Not critical, but preferred) - have the ability to start the drive pool with a single drive and add to it over time - Allow the added drive to be either as SATA USB3.1 - Allow the Raid "protection level" to be adjusted for a given volume from time to time. === I was actually planning to do this with Windows and its "Storage Spaces" solution. I just this afternoon put a new 10TB drive in a windows PC and added it to the "Storage Space" (like LVM). But my reading says the "resilience level" of a volume has to be set at the time the volume is created. In general everything works as expected with one exception: I have artefacts in context menus and application menues up to complete unreadable menues. Everything else isn't distorted at all. When switching off the compositor, the problems disappear. Switching from opengl 3.1 to 2.0 doesn't help, though. Is there any setting to improve menue rendering in this situation? Or some parameter for the modesetting module oder the nouveau driver? Thx and bye. [opensuse] How to set VGA mode after boot, like bootloader does? (for 'kexec' consistency)

I found that it's the boot loader that sets the initial screen mode before the kernel is loaded. It is often set again during boot by programs that set the console keyboard and font -- and seems to be separate from the mode one is in during a graphical boot. I'm trying to figure out how to set that VGA mode from "userland" (running as root) just before jumping to a new kernel with kexec. If I don't, kexec starts the new kernel in a non-deterministic mode that displays mostly garbage on the screen up until the screen's mode is reset by console kbd+font progs. Alternatively -- I've also seen the screen go blank for the entire boot process until the system displays the login prompt. Does anyone know how to do set the VGA mode from userland so kexec will start in a known state? [opensuse] Graphics errors with Leap 42.2 and Intel

I had some strange graphics errors both in KDE Konsole and in Gnome Terminal after upgrade from Leap 42.1 to Leap 42.2. I had multiple cursors in one terminal windows, typing was invisible, but the output of commands showed up correctly. Also scrolling in one terminal moved text blocks on another overlapping terminal window. The effect was visible both with and without the KDE desktop effects. I use an Intel 4200U CPU with integrated graphics. The secondary graphics card (Nvidia 730M) was disabled with "bbswitch". After updating all X components from the X11:XOrg repository (zypper dup --from X11_XOrg) the problem is gone. Is this a known problem? Hello, I have a problem on my 13.1 server (I know it's no more maintained, I'm working on the move to be done soon) for *one* user (the others works normally) I can't log in nor su # su mary su: failed to execute /bin/bash when passwd: mary:x:1006:100:mary:/home/mary:/bin/bash and ll /home rwxr-xr-x 9 mary users 4096 juin 3 2011 mary what could give this result? [opensuse] tar Veifying Data

Hi All, I am sure most of you are familiar with tar -W which verifies the files after writing to tape. example of command: tar -V labeloftape -cvWf /dev/st0 /home/user1 /home/user2 I have come across the need to verify the files (entire tape or individually) at a later date. So basically I want to put in a tape and then compare it's contents to the files on the server's file system and list the differences in the output. Does anyone know how to do this? I cannot seem to find many helpful suggestions on google (but several people have asked the same question). Hi All, I am looking to set up an email server (on my existing home server). Any recommendations? I want the basic abilities (smtp imap and pop / mail groups / address books etc.) It will mainly be used with my wordpress / osticket installs as well as forwarding emails to lists. I have not set up a linux mail server before so would not know where to start.
