This describes how to have encrypted /boot with single passphrase unlock (rather than twice, once for GRUB and once for Linux). It uses a key file which is on the encrypted volume. http://www.pavelkogan.com/2014/05/23/luks-full-disk-encryption/ The problem at the moment on openSUSE is it seems you can't have non-LVM LUKS volumes (just standard partitions). That poses a problem for encrypted Btrfs, so I wonder how that's supposed to work? The GRUB crypto work seems solid, even grub-mkconfig appears to recognize it's on a LUKS volume, and sets up the grub.cfg correctly. It makes the unencrypted, separate /boot seem antiquated. [opensuse] created new disk array, partitioned w/parted, but cannot mkfs.xfs: dev busy??

How can a raw disk partition be busy? I am able to read/write to it with 'dd': time dd if=/dev/sdd1 of=/dev/null bs=16M count=128 2147483648 bytes (2.1 GB) copied, 5.70285 s, 377 MB/s 5.72sec 0.00usr 2.21sys (38.77% cpu) > time dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sdd1 bs=16M count=128 2147483648 bytes (2.1 GB) copied, 7.65681 s, 280 MB/s 7.66sec 0.00usr 2.82sys (36.94% cpu) I've never seen an unformatted raw partition on a disk be busy before...? lsof & fuser turned up nada... [opensuse] MinGW cross compile on 13.1

A month or so ago I started getting the following message when I cross-compile Windows apps using MinGW from OBS. icon_c.lib: error adding symbols: File in wrong format The lib/dll files have not been recompiled in over 4 years. I am guessing what has changed is the MinGW. Oddly, it only complains about a couple files. Most all works great. Anyone else having problems linking with some libs? Hi folks, I am getting errors updating and I can not resolve it neither via zypper nor YOU. Never had anything like this before. This is a 13.1 (64 bit) system that was previously upgraded from 12.3 (I think more than one year ago). I also upgraded KDE to version 4.11.5 back then. The system has been running fine for the past year and has always been fully updated till this error. The on-disk format has been stable for quite a while, maybe 18 months or more. So kernel upgrades make a huge difference. But the opensuse kernel dev team does backports of the major fixes found in new kernels and puts them into the stable kernels for opensuse 13.2 (not sure about 13.1). But not every possible bug fix and feature enhancement is so easily back ported so not everything makes it. So there's still many cases where a kernel upgrade will fix a problem. I currently have 2* 2TB harddiscs in a RAID1 on a dual boot system with Windows 7 and SuSE 13.1 . I want to upgrade the RAID1 to 2* 4TB harddiscs. Is SuSE 13.1 capable of handling such harddiscs like HGST Deskstar NAS 4TB, SATA 6Gb/s, retail (H3IKNAS40003272SE/0S03665) Western Digital WD Red 4TB, 3.5", SATA 6Gb/s (WD40EFRX) Seagate NAS HDD 4TB, SATA 6Gb/s (ST4000VN000) Toshiba Enterprise MG03ACA 4TB, SATA 6Gb/s (MG03ACA400) ? The manufacturer says ASRock motherboard and BIOS can handle this. [opensuse] Repository Question

Hi Folks, My latest task is to set up an off-line openSuSE repository to serve a subnet without any connections to the outside. Updates to the repository will have to happen via "sneaker-net" with DVD or BlueRay data disks. I've got most of it done by first creating a local repository of the modules that I need. This has gone well using rsync, allowing me to download only the deltas going forward. But I'm having trouble downloading the nvidia repository. The public url as reported by zypper seems to be: http://download.nvidia.com/opensuse/13.2/ But there are no files there. download.nvidia.com also doesn't seem to be running the rsync daemon. Yast2 reports the repository as being here: obs://build.suse.de/home:sndirsch:drivers But I can't seem to find that anywhere either. How can I make a local mirror of the nvidia repo? Or, should I just download the binary-blob .run installs directly from nvidian.com? Or is there a better way to do this whole thing? re: openSUSE 13.2 KDE 4.14.8 (fully updated) Mozilla Firefox 38.0.1 Hi All, I just noticed that Firefox 38.0.1 was hiding the 'http://' portion of hovered-over links in the status bar, displaying e.g.: 'www.example.tld' instead of 'http://www.example.tld/' This is likely a very small issue in the overall scheme of things, but as a web developer, my ability to visually inspect the entirety of a published link by simply hovering over it is crucially important. I thought I'd share the fix: Visit about:config via the address bar and search for 'trimURL'. Double click the setting to toggle it from True to False. [opensuse] openSUSE 13.2 snapper elimination

Hello: This is openSUSE 13.2 with its default btrfs file system. I've been hit second time by the 'no space left on device' error at boot. My system has become unstable during work and when I tried to reboot it the error message appeared. Last time I could fix it by deleting some snapshots using snapper command. I cannot recall how I did it exactly, I found the necessary information on openSUSE forums. I have also edited my /etc/snapper/configs/root file as someone suggested on the forum: NUMBER_LIMIT="10" changed to NUMBER_LIMIT="1" NUMBER_LIMIT_IMPORTANT="10" changed to NUMBER_LIMIT_IMPORTANT="2" Now I would like to get rid of this snapper thing for good. I envisioned three options and would appreciate if received suggestions how to do them (option 1 and 2): 1. Disabling snapper completely. I don't want to keep any snapshots. 2. Convert/transfer an oS 13.2 installation on btrfs to ext3/4 file system. Is this doable? What directories do I have to transfer? (3. Abandon oS 13.2 and go to oS 13.1. I know how to do this.)
