[opensuse] Need better ... icons? thumbnails?

I have Apache set up on my file server so that I can access ~anton/public_html, and I have symlinked in "My Documents" and "My Photographs" and "My Music" and "My Downloads". This means I can pull down anything I've downloaded or created onto my phone or tablet via my home based wifi. The thing is, though, I only get directory listings. That's OK for documents, which have meaningful titles, and for music, similarly, but the photographs just have the strings generated by the camera, sequence numbers. DSCF0043.JPG DSCF0045.JPG or date sequences 2013-09-09-DSCF0152.jpg Yes, I do have subdirectories by date or sometimes by event 2014/05/Gardenparty/ but the files are still those unhelpful strings unless I have specifically renamed them. I'd like to see proper thumbnails. I don't want full blown "Gallery" software. I have that on one of my blogs and to be quite frank the process of uploading to it is tedious. The work-flow of downloading from the camera, running 'exiftool' to stamp with copyright and move the downloads to "<year>/<month>" is scripted and automated. Once there I have no problems viewing them with Konqueror/Dolphin and drilling down with Gwenview/Darktable. The point here is that Konqueror/Dolphin lets me see the thumbnails. I saw, for example, this http://www.askdavetaylor.com/create_apache_image_browser_script/ but have not been able to get it to work. And yes, I've added the cgi module to the Apache2 config. I've also added ExecCGI in mod_userdir.conf, which I realise is a security risk, but I'm not sure how else to address this. Can anyone help with this? Once again, I don't want a full blown gallery. [opensuse] problem with OpenSUSE 13.1 x64 latest kernels and IBM Lotus Domino Server 8.5.3FP6

There is a problem running IBM Lotus Domino 8.5.3FP6 on OpenSUSE 13.1 X64 with new kernels. In the Live Domino Console we're seeing the Application Server report: "Listener failure: 'bindsock' is missing, not executable, not owned by root, not setuid root or user needs net_privaddr privilege." Latest working version was kernel 3.11.6-4. Everything newer causes bindsock errors. Issue is exactly the same as seen few months ago on Ubuntu. [opensuse] The "right" way to clear up /tmp?

What is the "right" way to clean up /tmp? I know about the setting in /etc/sysconfig eg, what is documented here: http://lizards.opensuse.org/2009/07/19/howto-regular-cleanup-the-tempfolder… But... that isn't really working, and I rarely reboot - maybe once per month at most. Is there a better way to keep this under control? Should I even be bothered with it? Why be concerned about what's in /tmp? Well, lately my computer is chewing through the 20GB / partition at a rather fast rate. I started looking around and discovered that /tmp is over 3.5GB and growing. The other rather overpopulated directories in / are /usr/lib and /usr/lib64... together those two account for 4.2GB of my install... I've started poking at what's installed, but... it's not really any different than usual. Basically, I'm running out of room on my 20GB / partition... something that has never happened before. Finding the culprit is proving to be... a challenge. [opensuse] On the topic of thread hijacks

For your consideration: two people talking publicly -- one asks a proper question to the surrounding populace, get's an answer from a second in the crowd. first formulates a reply, and get's another answer from that same person. At this point a third party steps up and, for all intents and purposes interrupts, shouting at both (and anyone in earshot) "'you're doing it wrong!" Is this extremely rude? I find this is not only quite rude but highly insulting. In a face to face situation, I am entirely likely to tell the offender to shut up and go away. If I've seen this person do this repeatedly, I'm quite likely to be quite angry and heated about it. As long as I don't lay hands on, I'm actually fine, but s/he's quite likely to have hurt feelings and feel insulted while totally ignoring the insult they've already delivered. Is that OK? Is there a better way to address it? Some might say I've done the best thing possible in the first option... The conversation moves forward after a bit of tense back and forth. Some might say what I need to do is go and get a "cop" and have the rude, insulting, anti-social person addressed officially. Here, it seems the later is preferable... And I find myself in agreement. In the long haul, calling a cop (list admin?) clears the problem up. While the first one may FEEL faster, it actually doesn't fix the problem of individuals who feel entitled to force themselves into discussions while offer nothing of substance to that discussion. My apologies to all for my poor judgment. I did neither the list nor myself any service that way. In the future, I'll ignore miscreants and just mail the list admin. [opensuse] troubling line quality results

Since some days I had problems to connect with the internet. After checking the net speed and the line quality with the pingtest of Ookla I found that the computer I always use had a line quality between D and F. According to the test side barely usable for a lot of programms. (computer C) Did run the test also on a reserve set with a fully updated Tumbleweed and much to my surprise with that machine I have a very good line quality A or B. (computer A) Having a notebook with (not fully updated) Tumbleweed gave me a surprise C line quality. (computer B) All computers are connected to the same router. Cable length same. With every repeat of the ping test the results are same. All connectors are clean and according to my logic, the results of all three computers should be same. Could some body come up with the reason or reasons for this troubling result. Details of the computers: A) Desktop Computer 1, Line quality A or B, has a dual core Intel Pentium D, CPU 3,40 GHz, Network card PRO/100 VE Network connection (eth0) B) Notebook Computer , Line quality C, dual core ATOM CPU N270, 1,6 GHZ, Network card Atheros AR8121/AR8113/AR8114 PCI-E Ethernet Controler (enp3s0) C) Desktop Computer, line quality D, E, F, Intel Pentium 4 CPU 1,80 GHZ Network card RTL-8139/8139C/8139C+ (enp1s5) Opensuse Tumbleweed was freshly setup on A and B. Computer C was updated from 12.3. What wonders me is why computer A is still using the old eth0 and both computers with worse line quality are using the new name setting. I am not using the old time protocol, so I don't use that time4 server. If I read that correctly, that time4 server is for the old time protocol, but they recommend NTP, which I am using at time.nrc.ca. Also, as I mentioned, Clocksync, on my Android phone, also using time.nrc.ca agrees with the NIST sources. So, I have one device using time.nrc.ca agreeing with both NIST sources and one that does not. It does not sound as those the server is the problem. BTW, one of their servers is time.chu.nrc.ca. [opensuse] On suse being difficult ...

It has been claimed that later versions of Suse are difficult to use as they are installed but it has been my experience, after installing a few of these versions on PCs of older (80+ years) folks who definitely are not computer savvy, that they are able to use their system just fine with no followup calls needed after the initial how to explanation. These users might as well be using a thin client since most of their work - email, banking, etc - is web-based and all they need is a web browser. and Libre Office to handle their occasional office work. Between the web browser and L.O., there are all the included games and other apps that make them happy. Every user is, so far, tickled to death that they don't have to worry about those nasty Windows malware programs out there and, so far, they have not had any issues. I hope it stays that way. So, Suse is hard to set up and use unless you are an experienced user? Evidently not.
