thanks for reply, you're right, my problem therewith is, that after installation of packages yast reboots the system (i am not sitting all the time im front...). How to avoid this, so that i can run mkinitrd manually. better of cause would be, if yast would call mkinitrd correctly. [opensuse] remote and diskless install - mkinitrd

Hallo, I am going to install openSUSE 13.1 on several computers, remote and diskless. therefore I set up dhcpd/PXE/atftp. Everything works fine, for Install i use SSH. root will be mounted using nfsroot. Install works fine, but the automatic build initrd lacks support for network and nfs. possibility 1: How do I avoid automatic reboot after setup to call mkinitrd manually better - no need to run mkinitrd manually after each kjernelupdate: how to tell opensuse (install) or later yast/sysconfig to call mkinitrd with these instructions (-D eth0 -d X.X.X.X:/share --with=nfs --with=network). [opensuse] hexadecimal boxes on webpages

Right. This is annoying me, I have to get an instant answer! Can somebody tell me why I get these symbols in all sorts of places on the Internet (Twitter, random web pages, etc.)? দইসাবু This may not seem like a particularly openSUSE-related question, but the reason I ask on this newsgroup is because it would seem that for many other computer users these symbols are replaced by meaningful characters, but on all my openSUSE installations I see these nonsensical symbols regularly. The thing is, it's possible that some of you won't know what I'm talking about if your own system interprets them correctly and shows the actual characters above, so for your benefit, I'm referring to little boxes the full height and width of a text character (or bigger), containing four hexadecimal figures. Like: ---- |04| |A6| ---- From their placement on Twitter I assume it's often emoticons or obscure symbols available in some Windows font I don't have that I should be seeing, maybe Wingdings or something like that. What is it about openSUSE / Linux / Firefox or whatever else that results in me seeing these hexadecimal boxes instead of the correct characters? I use UTF-8 system-wide. For a long while I genuinely thought it was some geeky meme that required people in the know to reference some list! Until I started seeing them in far too regular places, like on Wikipedia articles. I would like to write a bash script, to manage some passwords (cat /dev/urandom, grep, awk...) What advises would you give, so that theses passwords can not be seen by others during the script execution ? * should I use files ? [opensuse] CryoPID ?

Hello, I have been looking for something like CryoPID: Freeze and Unfreeze processes in Linux [ http://www.linuxscrew.com/2007/10/17/cryopid-freeze-and-unfreeze-processes-… ] but the original site at http://cryopid.berlios.de/ seems to be out of order. Does anybody know if there is a newer version for kernel 3.1.10, 64Bit or any similar tool? I just need to put the state of a process into some file so that I can shutdown the machine and resume, where I stopped after boot again. I know that this is not an easy thing. [opensuse] Trying to push up oS 13.1 onto Lenovo G505

Hi all, I decided to spend this dark rainy weekend with setting up oS 13.1 with KDE on the above brand new laptop. Well, minor succes. In more detail, no success. First I tried to install only opensuse. I had troubles with booting, because this machine has UEFI. After several combinations of settings, I had so-so working oS which I updated. I was not a wise thing. At boot time, I got four entries, with two groups consisting of the original and the updated kernel and the corresponding advanced options with recovery mode. This last was only bootable. Normal boot failed because it did not find backlight controller. Haha. There is no one This morning it turned out, sometimes Win7 would be necessary. So I tried it with dual boot. It was an even major fault. Dead end, No drivers in win7 for this machine. One can collect them from Lenovo site. The only way to apply them would be to write them on CD, because no USB, as I said. DVD writer is dead for years in the desktop machine. Tried to went back to oS 13.1. Devastating fault. Tries to install on the USB stick, the partitioner does not seem to apply on this 1 TB disk. I decided to wipe down the whole HDD with Win XP installer, but of course I have a dozen in the lab, but none here at home. And then I found an Ubuntu 12.04 LTS ISO on my main box, wrote it to USB, and Installed on Lenovo. Smoothless!!! I saw the whole disk, got WLAN within a minute from plugging in the stick. So it was OK. The only cpmlaint was about a fake GPT msdos partitioning. OK, I perhaps garbled it up previously. Then thought the whole disk is back, let us try it again, and I will have some windows in virtualbox. Installation was eventless, but could boot only in recovery mode again. Hm. I updated to KDE 412, and everything disappeared, including net connection. Only the KDE desktop remained. In the meantime I made a bootable 13.10 UBUNTU stick. Does any of you has experience with this machine? I suspect it is not for oS. As it is stated in the papers it is for WIN 8, that I definitely do not want. Best regards, Albert

I am running oS 11.0 on this box. Why not update? Don't ask. Bad news. [opensuse] CUPS problems follow up

This subject has been discussed a lot since last month update. A winning concept seems to have been to update cups to the most recent version in the Printing repository, thereby disabling cups.socket. However on my 13.1 and KDE 4.12 with a network HP printer there is one problem. CUPS web interface is there and the printer is found. I can print and scan. Everything seems to work for a while i.e. after some ten minutes LibreOffice looses contact with the printer. Other programs do not seem to have this problem. Restarting LibreOffice and it works for a while. The behaviour is independent of LibreOffice version. My present solution is to re enable cups.socket and then the problem is gone. [opensuse] GNOME laptop power-management is practically missing

Hello, Despite recent openSUSE 13.1 kernel update, GNOME power management in my Lenovo G470 is still pretty broken. Somebody suggested this could be due the BIOS or firmware installed in my laptop, but power-management is perfectly working whenever I boot into WIN7. GNOME Power-Management still lacks to: a) Notify the user when battery level is critical b) Suspend on RAM automatically at reached battery threshold c) Hibernate automatically at reached battery threshold Currently GNOME Power-Management simply shut-down the laptop when battery reaches critical threshold that's a very annoying and irritating behaviour.
