Sorry SuSE: 9.1 is Waste of time and money!

I am sorry to conclude that my upgrade from SuSE 9.0 Pro to 9.1 Pro has been waste of time and money for me, so far. The same I have to say about the free SuSE "Installation support". The reason is that my SuSE 9.1 installation only detects 1 of my 3 SCSCI devices (as I wrote in another subject on this forum: http://lists.suse.com/archive/suse-linux-e/2004-May/3254.html) Yamaha 4416S CDRW recorder detected HP DVD Writer 100i NOT detected Epson 1640SU scanner NOT detected It's rather stupid. I have installed 9.1 using the DVD disk just in the HP DVD drive, but after the installation of 9.1, the KDE/Konqueror /media/recorder cannot access it and YaST2 cannot install additional software from it. Only one "Cdrecorder" is found in My computer and that is the Yamaha 4416 drive, which the KDE/Konqueror file manager assign as /media/recorder11. I am sure 9.1 is the reason, as I hadn't this problems with 9.0. I have tried both an update and two several new installation of 9.1. Neither SJDS nor Windows on the same multiboot PC have problems to detect these devices. In my opinion SuSE should therefore debug 9.1 better and longer, and not leave the problems to the customers. I see SuSE notes on their web saying that they know SCSI scanners are not detected in 9.1. But regarding my HP DVD writer problem, the SuSE support (as usual) don't take the responsibility and argue that this problem (a combination of IDE disk and SCSI devices) isn't included in their free installation support! This sounds remarkable, and I have never had a modern PC of so simple model or configuration that it has fitted the limited rules for the free installation support. Terje J. Hanssen

[SLE] RealPlayer G2 on SuSe 6.2

Yesterday, I finally got sound going on my Linux setup. I downloaded RealPlayer G2 and it worked beautifully. Today, RealPlayer run but no sound coming out. All other sound functions still work. I can still play my CD, have system sound BUT no sound when I run RealPlayer. /var/log/message said kernel: Sound: DMA (output) timed out - IRQ/DRQ config error? but KDE sound still work. I have re-installed RealPlayer 3 times now, still no sound when I run the RealPlayer. Any help is appreciated. Adding fonts?

Hi all, Reading some mails on the GIMP mail list, I ran across the procedure to install some more fonts for not only Gimp, but the system and StarOffice to use also. Well, I installed the fonts, went to the shell and issued the command xset fp+ <font directory> and then the rehash command and all fonts are there! Ok, that went well, but each time I restart the system, I have to do it all over again? Hi, I am trying to set up a simple repo, I read on the opensuse site about a binary called genIS_PLAINcache, because I can't see to find it or the package yast2-packmanager either. Can someone help. [opensuse] DenyHosts daemon mode on openSUSE 11.3

Hi, I am trying to run DenyHosts on OS 11.3. I can get it to sync and update the hosts.deny file, but with "rcdenyhosts status" it reports as being "unused" just after I started it with "rcdenyhosts start". I tried also with yast, setting up as a service (daemon) and starting it. It also stops immediately. In the denyhosts.log file there is no error info, just what it used to set it up at start. I've gone through the configs several times, no joy. [opensuse] What is the "official" way to mount floppy in openSUSE 12.x?

Hello: The subject says the question. [In pre 12 suse versions I had a /media/floppy directory where the floppy could be mounted at (by using the floppy icon on KDE3's desktop). In 12.x there is no such directory, and if created it will be removed at next boot, as I know correctly. Of course I could make a floppy dir under / or somewhere else, but I'd prefer its location to be in /media, since floppy is a media. Why should it be then outside of media dir?] What is the official way of mounting floppy in 12.x.? I have openSUSE 12.1 with KDE3 currently. [opensuse] Any chance of convincing Gimp to consider a .png as a valid saved image?

If I scan a dozen images, I have to keep track of what I save to PNG or JPG, because GIMP insists that none are saved and that I'm going to lose my data. It wants me to save as XCF and I will not. Guys, With the iphone we were able to configure good print function via CUPS/Avahi, is there anything similar that can be done with an Android tablet? Looking, it doesn't appear that there is any basic print capability provided by Android (3.2 Honeycomb). I would like to print to by openSuSE server in the same manner I do from iOS. Anybody found a good solution? I have found PrintBot, but that isn't a solution because it cannot be used legally where confidentiality is required. (data is transferred to a 3rd party server before printing). I need to find a direct print solution. What says the braintrust? -- David C. [opensuse] How Much Swap?

Hi Folks, Back in the '80s we configured swap space to be 1.5 x RAM as a rule of thumb. But I'm configuring 6 boxes now that contain 64-GB of RAM and I'm wondering if swap should be anything close to 96-GB. The boxes have only 128-GB of SSD for the operating system, so I'd like to minimize swap as much as possible. As background, these devices will be used as dedicated data acquisition devices. They will pump data from four Gig-E Ethernet ports and store it all in a 24-disk RAID-6 array. Preliminary measurements show we should be able to maintain continuous throughput until the RAID is full. So, any opinions on swap size in relation to RAM? Since the ... maybe upgrade yo kde4.10.4 or something else in the regular updates, but before the system upgrade 12.2->12.3 .. Sometimes .. only sometimes ... When I click on a URL in Thunderbird to go to that like in Firefox there is a small pause, a freeze while the pointer won't move and then the screen turns to hash. At that point the machine is dead-locked up. Can't hot-key to another screen/activity, can't telnet or ssh into it, it doesn't respond to pings. They have rebuilt it from backup, but now Thunderbird shows everything in my Inbox, whereas before my extensive set of filters would divert messages into separate folders. The folder hierarchy was under the ISP account, not Local Folders. I do not have Serverside folders with this account. I presume I'll have to recreate the original folder structure. I know the usual mantra is "Why not try it?", but I don't want to mess things further if the ISP will eventually restore my folder structure. I don't quite understand the difference between serverside filtering/folders, locally created folders under an email account, and local folders under 'Local Folders'. The last one seems to delete the mail from the remote server, which is not what I want. [opensuse] external router problem

Hello: I would like to connect to the network from my openSUSE 12.1 system using a Pirelli DRG A225G router. According to the router's manual I should configure the DSL connection by configuring the router through its web interface. The web interface should be accessible from a browser at the 192.168.1.254 IP address. Unfortunately I don't have a clue how I can access the router. I have connected the router's LAN1 connection to the computer's network card connection by an ethernet cable. I connected the DSL/phone cable to the router's DSL connection. On the router the following lights are lighting in green: POWER, LAN1, WLAN, DSL, INTERNET. But I can not access the router from a web browser: http://192.168.1.254/ does not connect to anything. Pinging 192.168.1.254 gives "connect: Network is unreachable" message, even if I turn off the firewall. How to configure an external router in opensuse? How could I make this connection work? I tried to google but could not find any relevant information. Furthermore as I can access the net only through a voice modem currently, I can not do extensive queries. [opensuse] Curious problem with Chromium on 12.3

Recently, I've started having a problem with Chromium on my notebook computer. When I try to go to GMail or Google+, the the app shows an error: "Aw, Snap Something went wrong while displaying this webpage To continue, reload or go to another page." This happens only on my Thinkpad E520 with openSUSE 12.3 My desktop computer, also 12.3 has no problem, nor does the E520 when running Windows 7. I can access those pages with Firefox on the E520 with 12.3. At the moment, I have no extensions enabled. Other sites work fine. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling Chromium. [opensuse] kmail does not complete a check-mail but works in icewm and LXDE

On my computer I have two versions of openSUSE 12.3. One based on Tumbleweed and one running a normal update. On both systems I have the problem that in KDE my kmail does no do a check mail. The 3 pop mail accounts do show but do not fetch mail. If I logout and go to icewm or lxde kmail works right away. Some times going back to KDE I found that kmail works there again but this is not every time. I use the traditional ifup. Could somebody help me out? I may need to open a new thread, but I atleast understand my problem now: >From a opensuse 12.2 machine I can initiate 2 ssh tunnels: For the first one I call /usr/bin/autossh iac(a)www.intelligentavatar.net -i /root/id_rsa_iac -p 22 -ynNT -R 33333:localhost:22 -o ExitOnForwardFailure=yes -o ServerAliveInterval=60 -o ServerAliveCountMax=3 which invokes: /usr/bin/ssh -i /root/id_rsa_iac -p 22 -ynNT -R 33333:localhost:22 -o ExitOnForwardFailure=yes -o ServerAliveInterval=60 -o ServerAliveCountMax=3 The remote host www.intelligentavatar is running centOS 6.3 and the above properly causes a port 33333 listen on 0:0:0:0 for IPv4. For the second one I call /usr/bin/autossh iac(a)cloud1.intelligentavatar.net -i /home/iac/.ssh/id_rsa -p 22 -ynNT -R 33333:localhost:22 -o ExitOnForwardFailure=yes -o ServerAliveInterval=60 -o ServerAliveCountMax=3 which invokes: /usr/bin/ssh -i /home/iac/.ssh/id_rsa -p 22 -ynNT -R 33333:localhost:22 -o ExitOnForwardFailure=yes -o ServerAliveInterval=60 -o ServerAliveInterval=60 -o ServerAliveCountMax=3 (I have 2 different private keys in 2 different places which is why the lines don't line up well.) For the second tunnel, the remote host is a openSUSE 13.3 machine recently installed and with all security patches in place. On that tunnel, the remote host is ONLY opening port 33333 for local host use, both IPv4 and IPv6 local host. I'm pretty sure it is not a key issue because the tunnels are being eststablished for both. It is just that when openSUSE 12.3 is the remote end, I have to be on that server to use the tunnel. Not really what I want / need, and I don't understand why the difference. Is there a bug in opneSUSE 12.3? [opensuse] latest drivers

Hi all, Last week we had a discussion in our department. We provide others with a ready-to-run usb-stick, we often we get reports of hardware not working (while we know that in a subsequent release of a distro it is working) My idea was to switch to Tumbleweed, not only using: ../repositories/openSUSE:/Tumbleweed/standard/ And also the others in ../repositories/driver:/wireless/openSUSE_Tumbleweed and ../repositories/driver:/nic/openSUSE_Tumbleweed And perhaps those in X11:/lxde, filesystems and security:/chipcard/ But i was confronted with reports from Greg, indicating a rough ride with regards to display drivers. [opensuse] btrfs fsck at boot??

Over the w/e I converted my 12.2 desktop to 12.3 by the 'change the repository and zypper up' method. A few problems with kde4 that I don't think have to do with me - more n that later. As regular readers will recall, this desktop is running one big btrfs that occupies the whole disk. No separate /boot or anything. This was a 'show it can be done' exercise and on the whole is doing well. Going over the boot messages in more detail to make sure all is well, post conversion, I notice a few errors reported from the btrfs startup. They don't seem to affect function, but it makes me wonder... I can't run btrfsck (yes I know its depreciated) or the equivalent on a mounted file system after boot. I do know that the other systems I have run the other FS fsck at boot. How can I get 12.3 to run btrfsck at boot? -- How long did the whining go on when KDE2 went on KDE3? The only universal constant is change. If a species can not adapt it goes extinct.
