It could be that this script is > missing or corrupt, or that grub2 itself was messed up by the update > (the script gets its boot device from grub2). thanks for the reply, I kinda figured ballpark as you wrote down, and also saw those scripts and roughly looked at them, still I wasnt exactly sure how grubmkconfig was populating that cfg file, as I said, when repairing the badly behaving 12.3 via usb key, it did show grub2 menu properly, and I managed to save that normally looking cfg file too, but during the early runtime there was that additional script executed which messed the cfg up again and reduced it to memtest as the only entry. so I was wondering if those grub2 scripts did look into the rpm database for kernel packages, or into the /boot/ path for kernel files or how that all worked, or why my entries got deleted :( also when I was first experimenting and hadnt figured out that my cfg had been reduced, I tried to mkinitrd and that wasnt outputting anything at all, so maybe it was some messed up rpm database or something? meanwhile I also figured that some rpm packages seem not to be listed in the rpm database any more. 12.3 boot woes, vanishing everything except memtest, how does grub2 populate the /boot/grub2/grub.cfg I wonder about how grub2 decides what to show in its bootmenu, as I am going insane for the past few hours. This previous 12.2 box was tried to be updated to 12.3 via remote (zypper dup) but the problems only started then. pretty simple setup, single /dev/sda disk, but sda1=swap, sda2=root, sda3=boot, sda5=usr, sda6=var I drove throughout half the country to get the dang thing fixed. Eventually I booted into rescue mode from a 12.3 usb key plugged into the machine. I updated the messed up box to the 12.3 vanilla from the key, it booted up fine after it fixed a small number of packages via the stick, mainly kernel and a few others. Later I rebooted the machine and to my surprise only the grub2 menu came up with the memtest entry, nothing else. I did this silly game a few times over and over, and eventually figured the first time it booted with the normally looking grub2 menu, inside the machine running, there was some task being executed (top) that was called /sbin/update-bootloader .... and the parameter I think was remove and then some string probably the menu string that was being displayed in the grub2. I verified this behavior, and it happens every time on this machine. Eventually I figured to quickly copy the still healthy grub2/grub.cfg file before that script or binary destroys it. But once that update-bootloader kicked in, even the grub2-mkconfig only put out a smallish config with memtest inside only. So then I fore-redownloaded and re-installed the kernel-desktop from the oss-update repo via network, and that gave me a healthy grub2/grub.cfg again. But this is insane. I never came across these weird things before. Before this whole mess I was actually using grub (v1) but that never came up going past the Grub > prompt after the initial zypper dup. Question is how do I clean up this messy machine, there are just too many places these days. /etc/grub.d/ etc/default/ /etc/sysconfig/ boot and bootloader and darn many places. But my main question at the moment is how does grub2 populate its menu or why does the vanilla kernel entry gets hosed and deleted by this obscure update-bootloader piece of software. ARGH. Hi, This is an announcement for those of you using darktable from graphics repo or factory repo. There will be some changes in how darktable uses thumbnail cache files. If you encounter problems with this release please use bugzilla to report any findings. Because compression code is disabled previous cache may not work. Removing ~/.cache/darktable/mipmaps is necessary If you are not using graphics repo then you are not affected (yet). Factory repo takes time to get included but you can factory version from graphics. Hello, I just tried to get some tool monitoring the actual CPU speed. SuSE 12.1, 64Bit has "cpupower" on the DVD. cpupower frequency-info analyzing CPU 0: driver: acpi-cpufreq CPUs which run at the same hardware frequency: 0 1 2 3 CPUs which need to have their frequency coordinated by software: 0 maximum transition latency: 10.0 us. hardware limits: 1.60 GHz - 3.30 GHz available frequency steps: 3.30 GHz, 3.30 GHz, 3.20 GHz, 3.10 GHz, 2.90 GHz, 2.80 GHz, 2.70 GHz, 2.60 GHz, 2.40 GHz, 2.30 GHz, 2.20 GHz, 2.10 GHz, 2.00 GHz, 1.80 GHz, 1.70 GHz, 1.60 GHz available cpufreq governors: conservative, userspace, powersave, ondemand, performance current policy: frequency should be within 1.60 GHz and 3.30 GHz. The governor "ondemand" may decide which speed to use within this range. current CPU frequency is 1.60 GHz (asserted by call to hardware). boost state support: Supported: no Active: no So current CPU frequency is 1.60 GHz and that is ok. When doing intensive work it goes up to 3.3GHz which is expected. But what does " boost state support: Supported: no Active: no" mean? Can I turn this on under SuSE? Processor is a Intel 2500K. Is there some graphical tool to monitor the CPU speed? I've got a setup with 64 partitions - how do I make it accessible from linux? I'm trying to login to my linux box using a remote-desktop session from windows. It connects and lets me sign in to a sesman-Xvnc or sesmanXrdp .. but both get errors after login and disconnect and take me back to the "Login to xrdp" GUI running on the linux box -- i.e. I'm connecting to xrdp, but it isn't starting any sessions or desktops... [opensuse] Shotwell refuses to import videos from my camera or folder on HD or card.

First I was using the shotwell version in 12.3, it absolutely failed to import anything from anywhere. I had to abort several times. I had to update to the version in gnome:apps, version 0.14.1. I had to remove everything from the Pictures photo, plus all of /home/cer/.cache/shotwell and /home/cer/.local/share/shotwell, to force it to rescan the photos. Then I addded back all the photos in their folders to /home/cer/Pictures and started Shotwell. It recognized all the photos... except those two videos. They are in the same folder as some photos from this June; the photos it sees, not those two videos. So I delete all the June month events, and tell Showtwell to import from camera again. It imports the photos, and says the videos are repeated! And refuses to import them. I see the two videos in the "no event" entry. I select them, click "create event". It does... And labels them "Undated"! In fact, ALL my videos are in the "No event" entry! WHY? How can I put them on the correct date? Or force the damm thing to import them even if repeated? Or delete the entire database to force it to import ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING? I can not edit those "no event" to move them to the proper event, even if I have to do that one by damm one. They are in the same /YEAR/MONTH/ folder structure as the rest... why can not it see them? Needless to say, this works with Gnome 2 in oS 11.4, same camera and photos and videos. I'm using XFCE in 12.3. I hate updating software, things break, instead of getting better :-/ - -- Cheers Carlos E. R.
