I have 5 disks in this machine. One old IDE as system disk and 2x2 SATA in 2 RAIDS. The disks of the failing RAID are plugged into SATA port 3 and 4 according to the printing on the board, but for some weird reason, they show up in the system as sdb and sdd. Before I put them in, the other 2 SATA disks were sda and sdb while the IDE disk was sdc. Now the "old" SATA disks are sda and sdc and the new ones are sdb and sdd. So... Why, for crying out loud, can't SATA 1 be sda to SATA 4 be SDD as it was in the good old times? [opensuse] Anyone seeing problems with bt download of 12.2 beta 1?

I'm trying to pull the DVD, KDE LiveCD, and GNOME LiveCD via bittorrent (I see that the net install disc isn't available via a torrent), but it seems the trackers are offline? (I'm showing a tracker status of "OK (DHT backup only)" and not seeing any seeds or peers. [opensuse] How do I make the installation system pick the network interface it was PXE-booted from?

It is a bit annoying to boot up an openSUSE installation system via PXE, PXE and then have to wait for the first few dhcp attempts to time out before the right interface is hit. For instance, I've just started an installation on a system with four interfaces. Unfortunately it was the last one (eth3) that had the physical connection :-( Is there an automatic way of letting the installation use system use the interface it was PXE booted from? [opensuse] Secure Wireless Authentication Not Working [WPA2/TKIP/PEAP]

With my new laptop [HP DV7-6B32US] I'm unable to connect to our corporate wireless [PEAP (MS-CHAPv2) /TKIP; 802.1x]. I can connect to our 'public' WPA-PSK as well as my home WPA-PSK wireless. On the RADIUS server used by the WAPs I don't see any activity when I try to authenticate. My previous laptop [DV7-3085DX] connected to the secure network without any issues. Any tips or suggestions are appreciated. [opensuse] Virtualizing Win XP for Games.

I want to run a VM of Win XP on my laptop for games. Though I'd get more power from native, I don't want to damage the current installation of openSUSE. I have used VMware... and it doesn't seem very stable. Haven't tried VirtualBox yet. Was wondering if I should go with KVM. Frankly, I'd like to get about as close as possible to running it straight on the hardware, which is what KVM seems to do. I was trying Avast on SuSE 12.1. But I always got an error message "avast: can not initialize avast! engine: Invalid argument" when scanning files. In the web I found the following site with a solution: http://manoftherambla.wordpress.com/2011/05/02/avast-can-not-initialize-ava… which states that I have to do sysctl -w kernel.shmmax=100000000 as root, which did the trick. Now the question: is this something that I can tune in SuSE 12.1? Some setting to make it permanent (beside compiling a new kernel)? [opensuse] Serial ports on openSUSE 12.1

We are trying to use serial ports on openSUSE 12.1. Nothing fancy or different from how they have been used in the past. Except nothing shows up on the open port. Are there any changes to installed services in 12.1 compared to earlier releases that could have a basic change to simply reading from the serial port? I can see that there is no problem with opening the port or setting the properties. The system calls proceed without complaint. It is our own software as well as other apps that simply read from the ports that do not provide data. Unfortunately, the systems are also new model computers. Never change a single component at a time... We looked around in the BIOS and see nothing related to the serial ports. So I can't guess how the serial ports could be messed up at that point. We have used serial ports on Unix and Linux for a zillion years. The code is not new. Coupled with that fact and that other apps are not seeing data, I can only suspect the PC or the OS. Suggestions welcome. [opensuse] YaST fails online update, claiming there is no room left on /

This is in OpenSuse 12.1, running in a VM created using Oracle's virtual machine software (VirtualBox). Here is the exact error message: Subprocess failed. Error: RPM failed: installing package dbus-sharp-0.7.0-5.3.1.noarch needs 32KB on the / filesystem The disk usage analyzer tells a very different story: Device Mount Point Filesystem Total Size Available /dev/sda2 / ext4 9.8GB 307.4MB /dev/sda3 /home ext4 14.1GB 12.3GB If I read this right, it says that the file system at mount point / has over 300 MB left, and /home has over 12 GB left. How? That looks to me like home is a subdirectory of the / directory and so I don't understand how a subdirectory can have so much more space available to it than its parent directory. First, I don't understand this as I created it with only one virtual drive that ought to have been plenty big enough. As I know nothing about administering a Linux box (though I can write programs to run on one easily), I just accepted the defaults (except the obvious things like setting the correct time zone). Second, I don't understand this device business when the VM was configured with only a single virtual drive. I did see sda2 and sda3 on one or another of the screens during the install process, but I don't know what they're supposed to be, or if they relate to the drive at all. Can someone explain to me what I am seeing, what I need to do to properly diagnose the problem, and most importantly, what I can do to fix the problem so that I can install any updates YaST finds? If the problem is / has too little space left, can that space be obtained from /home without sacrificing any data? After all, apparently /home has 12 GB of room available.
