[opensuse] Kontacts and Google Mail sync

I was wandering and searching if is there a way to synchronize Kontacts in Kmail2 with Google Contacts. In that manner is possible to keep a contact available from Google Contacts. Any suggestions greatly appreciated. [opensuse] How to enable sound in Gnome installed via KDE?

Hi, I am using openSUSE 11.4 with KDE desktop (default). Now from Yast, I installed two other desktops - GNOME and XFCE. The GNOME version is 2.32 to which I can login. But in the GNOME as well as XFCE desktops, I am not getting any login sounds. I am able to play the songs, but the login sound is not coming. I checked in GNOME -> Menu -> Control Center -> Sound but not able to resolve the issue. You might want to entertain yourself by using wireshark to trace your client behaviour and look at the actual SMTP protocol content. I have looked at too many of those protocols and I can assure you that mail clients remove the Bcc header right from the start. [opensuse] 11.4, problem with printer install

After the repair of my trusty HP DeskJet 400 I was planning to install that printer again on my opensuse 11.4. Much to my chagrin, the install with cups or via yast did not find the driver for this printer. Googgling brought some information why this printer has some difficulties. The HPlip from Hewlett and Packard does not include this printer. But generally it was mentioned that Gutenprint should have the driver. Gutenprint is installed. The printer not detected. I found some sites where the pdd file for this printer was offered. The result of the download showed a .bin file. Somewhere it was mentioned to rename the bin file into a ppd file which I did. Still no recognition of the printer.The Printer is found by cups oas HP Deskjet 400 on USB://HP/Deskjet%20400 Is there some mistake in the addressing? What else should I do to get the printer running? [opensuse] CPU: higher clock speed or more cores? and: ksysguard possible CPU usage bug?

Hi folks, I notice the trend in desktop CPUs is that clock speeds have been steady for some time at 2...4GHz obviously depending on price, while the number of cores is on the increase, current offerings running from one to eight cores. I always thought that more cores is good for doing lots of things simultaneously, but not necessarily for single CPU-intensive tasks, as these are often not able to run in multiple threads/cores at the same time. I'm obviously not an expert, so do correct me if I'm wrong. To check this, on a dual-core system, I tried looking at ksysguard (System Monitor), and as expected I see that a number of CPU-intensive tasks run up to 49% CPU usage (example: file compression with ark). Surprisingly, however, when I switch to the 'System Load' tab in ksysguard, the graph clearly shows CPU1 and CPU2 both running at or near maximum (100%), even though the CPU usage of all processes adds up to much less (say, 49% for ark, and not more than 10% for everything else). Two questions: 1) For typical desktop use, is it more sensible to buy a six-core 2,5GHz processor, or a dual-core 3,6GHz? In other words, should I prefer more cores, or higher clock speed? (I'm aware of the 'benchmark'-style comparisons around the Internet, but it's their ecological validity I'm curious about.) 2) Is what I see a possible bug in ksysguard, or is there something I'm not understanding here? [opensuse] OpenSUSE 12.1 not mounting encrypted /home

I've just installed openSUSE 12.1 on my Dell Inspiron 1525 laptop, alongside an existing 11.4 installation. In other words, each system has its own / (root) partition, but they should both mount the same /home partition, which is encrypted. 12.1 is on /dev/sda3, 11.4 is on /dev/sda6, both formatted with ext4. 11.4 asks me to enter the password for the encrypted partition halfway through the boot process, and is then able to mount it under /home. 12.1 never asks for the password, until the system is fully loaded and I am logged in. Then, during the session, a notifier message pops up saying that device id something_or_other requires a password. The 12.1 grub menu allows me to choose the 11.4 system to boot, but selecting this option takes me to the 11.4 grub menu first, from where I select the system I want to boot, eg 11.4 desktop, 11.4 failsafe or Windows, but it doesn't know about 12.1. What do I need to change to access my encrypted partition in 12.1 and mount it under /home? BTW, I've checked the 12.1 /etc/fstab and the /dev/mapper entry for the encrypted partition has automagically changed the 'noauto' option to 'nofail', as suggested in the Release notes. that make me think OBS is the worst Idea ever... Hi all, I just experienced some of the difficulties with OBS based on scribus and I want to summarize it. Maybe someone can draw some conclusions from that to improve the situation. Suse 11.4 delivers Scribus in version 1.4 RC1 which is - due to major technical issues - practically unusable. As none of the subsequent RCs made it to update (where I think they belong because they fix major issues) I started looking for alternative repositories to get a newer version of Scribus. Problem 1: Unfortunately one does not get very helpful information about which of the various repos should be chosen. Among others I found Education/openSUSE_11.4 from which I installed Scribus 1.4 RC3 (or RC4, i can't exactly remember, it was 9 months ago). And I was lucky with regards to future RCs as the Scribus in this repository was regularly updated up to RC6. Now Scribus has been released as final 1.4 some two weeks ago and I was wondering why the heck it was still not updated in the Education-Repo. So I searched OBS again. Below is the list of repos for Suse 11.4 which provide Scribus in some version: Repos Version openSUSE:11.4/standard 1.4 RC1 Education/openSUSE_11.4 1.4 RC6 KDE:Release:47/openSUSE_11.4 1.4 RC6 KDE:Distro:Stable/openSUSE_11.4 1.4 RC6 KDE:UpdatedApps/openSUSE_11.4 1.4 RC6 spins:open-pc:kde/openSUSE_11.4 1.4 RC5 KDE:Distro:Factory/openSUSE_11.4 1.4 (final?) KDE:Release:46/openSUSE_11.4 1.4 RC5 KDE:Unstable:Playground/KDE_Release_46_openSUSE_11.4 1.5 svn Problem 2: No one tells me whether the repository I use is still alive, the packages in there are still maintained and whether I should change to another repository to get e newer version of the software. There are 5 versions of Scribus in OBS (RC1, RC5, RC6, final and 1.5 svn). In at least 9 different repos (and I stopped counting after the first page). To me that's ridiculous. Its an unneccessary multiplication of efforts. And still there is no regular update (through openSUSE Update) to the final version so with the standard-repo openSUSE still ships a crappy, segfaulting RC1. Thats why I think OBS does not work. At least the way it is set up and organised at the moment. And it is basically impossible to recommend OBS to a non-nerd in any way. [opensuse] 12.1 installation failure, need help

Hi - Well this is a fine mess I find myself in! I just installed openSuSE12.1 x64 on my media center. This is a complete new install into a separate partition. My previous version - openSuSE11.3 works fine. The installation of 12.1 pretty much went smoothly, only one hiccup, it froze when it tried to reboot, with some sort of display problem. But when I restarted the computer, 12.1 came up fine and showed my desktop. BUT I have no mouse or keyboard functionality! Kinda makes it hard to do anything! When I move the mouse, I do get a popup from something called BlueDevil which is asking if I should authorize my Logictech wireless mouse, but since I cannot move the mouse cursor, or do anything with my Logictech wireless keyboard, I am stuck in a Catch22 no-mans land... So, could the wizard who designed this part of openSuSE12.1, or some other guru, tell me how to get my mouse and keyboard working? BTW, the mouse and keyboard work fine when the GRUB boot menu is displayed. And all works fine when I boot back up 11.3..... So not a hardware issue, this is a configuration screw-up of 12.1. Booting into safe mode of 12.1 does NOT resolve it either.... [opensuse] microphone noise using skype

As i tested my skype service on lenovo z570 opensuse 12.1, i heard a rather disturbing noise. I have tried to fix the microphone audio channel, by inspecting devices through Kmix, but i am not an expert at all. What i can report is: Capture device is 'Internal Audio Analog Stereo' , with volume almost at its max level. Capture Streams shows no device. In the system settings, Phonon seems to be ok. Same noise, switching from gstreamer to xine backend Any ideas?
