[opensuse] microphone noise using skype
As i tested my skype service on lenovo z570 opensuse 12.1, i heard a rather disturbing noise. I have tried to fix the microphone audio channel, by inspecting devices through Kmix, but i am not an expert at all. What i can report is: Capture device is 'Internal Audio Analog Stereo' , with volume almost at its max level. Capture Streams shows no device. In the system settings, Phonon seems to be ok. Same noise, switching from gstreamer to xine backend Any ideas? Any microphone testing utility? thank you Paolo -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

You should be able to use the phonon module to set the input to the microphone. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Noise sounds like what? Be advised that Skype messes with the mic volume on almost every platform you use t on. Do the Skype audio test by calling skype voice test and it should remember those settings and try to apply them on each call. In any event, are you listening with headphones or speakers? With speakers, skypy is in a constant feedback fight with itself, (echo cancellation) and this can lead to really chopy sound. Sometimes they do this with pre-tranmission adjustment of the voice packets for those plat forms where they can't adjust mice volume without root capability (such as Android 3.x). -- _____________________________________ ---This space for rent--- -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

first of all a would needa guide to terminnolgy Should i use Phonon to fix my microphone? Should i use the Pulse 'audio Recording' section? What are 'CaptureCommunication', 'CaptureRecording','CaptureControl'? What is relevant to 'my microphone'? Kde Help pages are very poor and badly written kmix shows 'Internal Audio Analog Stereo' as the only capture device. Is that what is expected? thank you Paolo -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org
My experience with sound (esp. Microphone) on Linux: Get rid of Pulseaudio as fast as possible. Fixed it for me with Suse 11.1, 11.2 and 11.4. Regards, Martin Am 08.01.2012 20:59, schrieb xPol:

I find that getting rid of Pulse Audio is the most surefire way to screw

Horse manure :-) . The first thing I ever do is to get rid of pulseaudio - or at least disable it in YaST Hardware/Sound[#] - and install alsamixergui and then configure my sound card. Pulseaudio is an abomination - but some people swear by it. I swear AT it. At this moment I am running 12.1 with NO pulseaudio in sight. All my sound works: TV, music, DVD, and in glorious 5.1 sound (if the medium has it). [#] I don't remember if it was an earlier version of oS or another distro which I tried but pulseaudio could not be removed: it was solidly tied to alsa and refused to be removed; but in 12.1 I am able to remove it. I would like to second that. Couldn't get my sound working without getting rid of pulseaudio. Now it is the first thing I do when I setup or upgrade my system. For me, pulseaudio is nothing but headache. Eddie -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

I think the informative term here is "my" given there's varying levels of capabilities and support for different hardware. I did exactly this until, to my astonishment, the default 11.4 PA worked perfectly from day one... system sounds, microphone, Skype, all my favorite multimedia apps, the mixer ... everything. So, I agree if it gives you trouble get rid of it. But I also agree that it works /great/ when it works ;-) Carl -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org
