[opensuse] Suddenly awful sound and...

opensuse 11.3, stock kernel, nvidia with the 256.53 (which is working fine) Hi, I woke up this morning and like I usually do I opened up Dolphin, went to the folder with all my music, found a song I wanted to listen to as I dressed and started to play it. The sound was *horrible*! The song was playing, but it sounded awful, like it was someone scratching a record or something. I thought it was exceedingly strange, but figured a reboot should 'fix' it. Reboot didn't work because the system wouldn't shut down. I normally leave my system running 24/7/365. I've shut it down a few times since I've had 11.3 installed and *most* of those *few* other times, it did the same thing...it just hanged at a dark gray screen (not black). Once I waited half a day to see if it would clear up and shut down - it didn't. I had to hard boot, which I know is very bad, but I had no other choice. Once I got back to startup, now the system startup (fast boot) is slower than molasses in January. It used to pop through and get me to my desktop in 30 seconds or less...now it's taking almost 3 minutes, and when it does get back to my desktop, the sound is still horrible. What could have happened overnight to make my system suddenly useless like this? I've looked at the msg.log thing in /var/log, but I don't understand it enough to get anything out of it unless it specifically said 'YOUR SYSTEM IS ABOUT TO BLOW UP' or anything along those lines. Is there some kind of bug that's keeping my system from shutting down or restarting? (downloading a new kernel is prohibitive because I'm on dialup) If any other info is needed to help me figure out why *suddenly* my system has turned to garbage, please just shout out and I'll get it here. [opensuse] Libre/OO kerning/leading spacing bug - makes re-creating OO documents Libre impossible - any help?

Guys, A lot of my practice is word processing based. Key to that is the ability to re-create documents saved in .odt format. Currently that is impossible in LibreOffice due to a font/line spacing difference between OO and Libre. I need help figuring out what the problem is while the Document Foundation works on the bug: https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=35803 Does anybody have any idea what is causing the difference in kerning/leading/spacing --and-- more importantly what I could use as a temporary work-around until the bug is resolved. Right now, I have had to stay with OO to preserve the ability to re-create pleadings/etc.... But, with everybody moving to libre, I would like to understand this issue a little better. I have tested both Linux and windows versions of Libre and confirmed the bug is present in both (see bug for screenshots, etc...) What say the OO experts? -- David C. [opensuse] iconv - how do I make recognize 'unicode-1-1-utf-7' as utf-7 ?

[opensuse] Setting up Postfix/Cyrus Mailserver - File errors

I'm setting up postfix/cyrus imap on a new install of openSuse 11.4 (64 bit). Having a few problem, but before I get into the details of that, there is some strange problem that is causing cyradm and SMB/NMB to not run. When I try to run cyradm I get a message that login is disabled. Not sure what this is about. Also Samba won't start properly, and I'm suspecting what ever is causing the cyrus imap issue may be causing the Samba issue as well. This seems to me to be some file system problem or maybe a permissions problem, not sure? I switched to runlevel 1 and ran fsck, no errors reported (default EXT4, all mount points on / ). I have a separate box with also clean 11.4 install (32 bit) with none of these problems. All help appreciated. [opensuse] Thunderbird - Hylafax/Avantfax attachment name encoding problem??

Guys (mozilla/email gurus), For some reason, the .gif thumbnail and .pdf attachments names are not being handle properly in thunderbird. When a fax is received by hylafax/avantfax, a thumbnail of the fax is created in .gif format as 'thumb.gif' and a .pdf of the fax is created as 'fax.pdf'. Both of these are included as attachments to the mail notification sent by hylafax/avantfax. The php code that defines this is: define('THUMBNAIL', 'thumb.gif'); <snip> define('PDFNAME', 'fax.pdf'); In the past, the fax notifications have come through with the proper attachments 'thumbs.gif' and 'fax.pdf'. Now, in thunderbird, instead of getting 'thumbs.gif' and 'fax.pdf', you get attachments of 'Part 1.1.2' (instead of thumb.gif) and 'Part 1.2' (instead of fax.pdf). I can save 'Part 1.1.2' as whatever.gif and save 'Part 1.2' as something.pdf and view them fine, but the problem is that something isn't working correctly in the attachment recognition in thunderbird. But what?? I have posted to the hylafax-user list and they have suggested it is an encoding issue in tbird. For grins, I have opened the emails in windows and they do come through as (ATT00007.gif and ATT00010.pdf) for example. That's fine, because the filetypes are correctly recognized. Hmmm this is a new one. On a reasonably fresh default install of openSUSE 11.4/KDE4.6, I've been trying without success to install Skype. $ zypper install skype-2.2.0.25-suse.i586.rpm Loading repository data...
