[opensuse] ssh X forwarding - what's missing?

Hi, I have just installed openSUSE 11.3 on a PC, basically did a minimal X install. However, when I ssh to this box with ssh -X <host>, I cannot run X applications, e.g. xterm. I get: xterm Xt error: Can't open display: xterm: DISPLAY is not set The problem is probably on the remote PC because I can use X forwarding from the same client to other remote hosts. [opensuse] Playing with IPv6

With all this talk about IPV6, and today being a bit of a slow day, I thought I might play a bit with using 6to4 via 192.88.99.1. (we already have an IPv6 range, but unfortunately our Lancom DSL router doesn't speak IPv6 yet). So, I did the following: ip tunnel add tun6to4 mode sit remote any local 212.25.14.42 ttl 64 ip link set dev tun6to4 up ip -6 addr add 2002:d419:0e2a::2120:2501:4042/128 dev tun6to4 route -A inet6 add default gw ::192.88.99.1 I'm not completely certain what 2120:2501:4042 is, it seems to be a "coded" variation of "212.25.14.42" (I got it from http://6to4.version6.net) However, I must be missing something as I'm unable to ping an IPv6 address, e.g. www.switch.ch - I can see the echo request going out, but nothing ever comes back. What might I be missing? [opensuse] SuseFirewall IPv4 vs IPv6

I use a 6in4 tunnel to obtain IPv6 access. It uses sit1 as the tunnel interface. I have configured the firewall to have sit1 in the external zone. Today, I tried running nmap to my firewall, on both IPv4 and IPv6. Here is the results of the IPv4 scan: PORT STATE SERVICE 22/tcp open ssh 993/tcp open imaps And IPv6: PORT STATE SERVICE 7/tcp open echo 9/tcp open discard 13/tcp open daytime 19/tcp open chargen 22/tcp open ssh 37/tcp open time 80/tcp open http 139/tcp open netbios-ssn 143/tcp open imap 445/tcp open microsoft-ds 993/tcp open imaps As you can see, there is a significant difference. The IPv4 scan shows exactly what I expected. However, IPv6 shows several other ports open, which are not supposed to be allowed by the firewall. Does the firewall in OpenSUSE 11.3 not properly filter these common protocols on IPv6. Also, I see no diference whether I scan the firewall or a computer behind the firewall on IPv6. [opensuse] Trying to upgrade from 11.1 to 11.3

I tried upgrading my laptop from 11.1 to 11.3. The upgrade seemed to go fine, but when the system boots up the desktop doesn't load correctly. It's set to use gnome. All I get is a blue screen with my pidgin window in it, but it doesn't have the normal title bar or border. I have no desktop icons or task tray. Right clicking doesn't do anything. I also had nvidia drivers installed so I thought that was the problem. I managed to get an X session going over vnc (where the desktop didn't work right either). I was able to get into yast, add repositories, including nvidia, and do a full update. Unfortunately it's still at the same spot. Also when it starts it seems to try and start a remote desktop session to one of the servers I normally connect to. Not sure why it's trying to do that. Anyone have any suggestions for troubleshooting this? How can I see what things are tryign to auto load on X startup? How can I reset gnome's settings? Maybe there's something in there from 11.1 it doesn't like. I'm going to try creating a test user to see if a fresh user has the same problems. [opensuse] Opensuse and faulty wifi connection

Hi I don't know if anybody else has experienced something like this. But please chime in if you have any idea or information. My otherwise very nice and rather new HP ProBook 4720 has a serious problem with wifi. It gave up on my home net (very old 802.11A/B) It can see it on the iwconfig level, but quickly diconnects. At work there's another net (802.11.g?) and it connects. But it loses connection several times a day, and will only reconnect if I disable and enable wireless. The Probook has a RT3090 chip, and rt2860sta is automatically used. There's a wifi button on the keyboard, but it never changes color. I _think_ that the problems started about 1-2 weeks ago. At least I know that the home net worked in the beginning. I'm not sure if I did something, if it's an effect of upgrading something (kernel, e.g.) or what. [opensuse] VirtualBox and Windows XP with a wrong system license

Several years ago, I bought a laptop that, of course, had a legit license. Since, the laptop died and switched to another laptop using a WPA crack. Now, using the same install CD, installed it in VirtualBox along with the same WPA crack. Since MS hates this thought, is there a way to run on both platforms without a crack program and without pay for a new license. In my old mainframe world, you could get a generic product key that would allow the packages to run in a VM machine. I have done a lot of Googling to no avail on this subject, so I thought I wold go to the source and ask this list. [opensuse] /etc/mtab not fully populated with kernel 2.6.37 from tumbleweed

The subject pretty much says it all. Installing kernel 2.6.37 from tumbleweed mucked up the system to where only /proc and /boot are shown in mtab (consequently other tools that rely on it break). Is anyone else seeing this? Any ideas of a fix? [opensuse] grub install error logs

I was using repair from an 11.2 net install disk to fix a grub problem and can't find the logs. I know repair has gone away but maybe somebody can remember or perhaps its similar enough to normal installation that the logs are in the same place? I selected repair and chose to reinstall grub. There were various problems but it didn't give me any details so I need to find the logs (and/or a manual page, the help was useless) (1) It gave me a list of filesystems that didn't have mount points. I diligently edited the list but when it came to use it, it said some filesystems did not have mount points. Later investigation showed that it had created the mount points for all the filesystems that were on physical disk partitions but had not done so for any filesystem that was on an LVM volume. What's the story there? (2) When it tried to install grub it popped up a dialog box with some unhelpful remark like "An error occurred" but provided no hint of where to find further information. Help provides nothing; browsing the filesystem didn't turn anything up (I guess I missed it). So this is the most important question for me. Where is the log? (3) I subsequently chose the option to edit the configuration files manually, but it just displays an empty GUI.
