[opensuse] KDE3 Enthusiasts - neat opportunity for opensuse and others

Guys, For those that don't know there have been several groups that have looked at the logistics of centralizing, for lack of better words, a location for handling changes to libraries, build tools, etc. that effect kde3 in order to allow kde3 to be maintained in a sane manner and prevent the wheel from being reinvented 1000 times over distro-by-distro. Of course implementation will always be distro specific, but the goal is to coordinate/handle the changes that impact the desktop at what was the kde.org level with the combined input and resources from all those who have an interest in seeing the desktop continue so it is done in an efficient way. Aside from the great work the guys here at openSuSE have done, another of the more notable efforts has been the Trinity project headed by Timothy Pearson (pearsoncomputing.net). The chakra project has been another player as well. I have been in contact with Pearson and the people at Chakra over the past few days. What I expect to take place in the next day or two is the expansion of a mailing list where we want to gather as much talent as possible to help contribute to solving the challenges that are bound to arise in the future as well as solving some of the current limitation with kde3 dcop/dbus, etc.. Much of this has been kicked around for some time, but in the past 36 hours, through coincidence or reason unexplained, there have been a number of kde3 folks brought into this discussion so let's make hay while the sun shine for the benefit of openSuSE and the rest of the OSS community. If you are interested, what you need to do is drop by http://chakra-project.org/bbs/viewtopic.php?pid=20476#p20476 (that is just where the current active thread is - the rest is just a flurry of emails, etc..) Details concerning the mailing list, if not posted there yet, should be posted there within the next 24 hours. What I would like to see happen is those with interest join the mailing list, especially you prior kde3 devs. (I know you are up to your eyelids in KDE4 right now, but if you only write one sentence that saves the rest of us a months worth of wastes effort you have done more than you could ever imagine -- Will, Sven...) Lord knows it will be a low-volume list requiring little input. The goal is to help those spearheading this project manage what whatever the pressing needs may be to make sure when a Linux user sits down to install a desktop on a Linux box they have the choice to install IceWM, blackbox, fluxbox, e-16, enlightenment, openbox, kde3, kde4, WindowMaker, xfce, twm, etc.. If you are one of those that believe that Linux users ought to be able to have a choice to install kde3 in the future, then we need you on the mailing list. See you there. -- David C. [opensuse] /etc/modprobe.conf on 11.3

Hi all, Due to some uncorporative collegea's i am late in my transition towards 11.3, but yesteday i came across something that i couldn't solve right away, and google wasn't my friend this time. I use virtual machines and virtual networks (xen) In some cases they oly need to communicate between themselves, so i uncomented and extended the lines in /etc/modprobe.conf and/etc/modprobe.conf.local: install dummy0 /sbin/modprobe -o dummy0 --ignore-install dummy install dummy1 /sbin/modprobe -o dummy1 --ignore-install dummy install dummy2 /sbin/modprobe -o dummy2 --ignore-install dummy ... So i can up to eight independant networks, despite the fact of only having two real nics. With 11.3 however config setup has changed. Things are now stored in: /etc/modprobe.d/nn-something.conf But where can/should i store the config for my dummy0 ... dummy6 network devices? The manpage stil talks about /etc/modprobe.conf... As "the man" says: (the /etc/modprobe.conf file can also be used if it exists, but that will be removed in a future version) So i probably could create my own /etc/modprobe.conf, but i would rather keep my config-layout up-to-date, so could i just use the same format and create my own /etc/modprobe.d/25-dummynet.conf? [opensuse] gnash is eating my cpu

Since some time I am surprised to find my CPU use up to 99-100%. Used htop and found that gtk-gnash was the culprit. Google found me that there seems to be problems with gnash since 2007. Would like to get rid of the problem because the gtk-gnash problem already starts when Mozilla Firefox discovers the information that there is a playable flash movie. The download of the page will not stop and goes on for very long. I normally do not wait for Firefox to stop. I read the page and avoid looking into the flash offer. Before I start trying out other web browsers I would like to know if there is a solution for this gnash problem. I checked and have flash-player 10.1.82.76-0.1.1, flash-plugin 10.1.82.76 release, pullin-flash-player 11.3.1-2.1.1 and gnash 0.8.7-1.29 Should I delete any of them? [opensuse] Mozilla Firefox 3.6.8 update coming as online update

Hi folks, The openSUSE maintenance team will be updating Mozilla Firefox from 3.5.11 to 3.6.8 in openSUSE 11.1 and 11.2. The updates are already in the -test update repos and will be put online some time next week. If you want to test, you can. (The -test repo is where we stage our updates. [opensuse] is there a tool to reduce image dimension by removing empty spaces?

Hello. Is there a tool existing that can reduce image dimension by removing empty spaces? Attached to this email post are two images, one original, the other I want it reduce to. the "Zealous Crop" feature in gimp would not work up to the expectation because it reduces either the space in the whole column or not. Consider the case in my original picture, to reduce the width, in the first row of buttons, the space before/after "Help" and before/after "Quit" should be removed, in the second row, the space before/after "Manual Page" should be removed, but these spaces to be removed do not overlap in some places, thus a Zealous Crop would be successful in removing all the space before "Help", after "Quit", and some space before/after "Manual Page", but won't be able to effectively remove the space after "Help" and before "Quit". Is there already such an software tool that can do what I want? Thanks in advance! Zhang Weiwu P.S. I know posting with image attachment is not welcome on mailing list but in this case both images together are less than 1kilobyte, thus keeping it somewhere on the web look more troublesome than just to attach them.

[opensuse] Repositories and priorities

I'm a long-time KDE user, familiar with Fedora and new to OpenSUSE. I find I am getting far fewer updates than expected, with huge numbers of packages apparently protected against updates. I understand the principle, but would value some help in finding documentation about the various repositories and setting priorities, since I assume this is my problem.
