[opensuse] First impressions on OpenSUSE 11.3: 11.0 was better...

Hi all! it's been a while since I last watched the list and a while since OpenSUSE 11.3 hit the market so I installed it yesterday on my desktop PC at home, the same one I used with OpenSUSE 11.0 + patches before the installation: HP xw4200 (3 GB RAM, 64bit dual-core, etc). It was an installation from scratch so I backed up my account and installed everything as new... the installation process went fine (only an error message for a repository, can't remember which one now, sorry) and the system booted. I've been using SuSE since version 5.3 back in 1995-6 (?) and for the first time in so many years I have to say: I'm disappointed with the final result. Reasons for such a bold statement could be many but here I'll list just a few in random order: * I expected KDE 4.x to be faster and lighter but it's not... maybe the next lines are related to this behavior... please read on. * SaX2 is missing in action - if not, please tell me where to find it as YaST2 can't either. The only way to get a dual-head setup up and running with Xinerama on a supported nVidia gfx card with the latest official nVidia drivers/modules (1) was to dig into forums for infos and using some nvidia-* tools I never heard about before. At least I learnt something new in the meantime :-) although I don't know where/how to activate the 3D acceleration... (1) nvidia-gfxG02-kmp-desktop-256.35_k2.6.34.0_12-14.1.x86_64 and x11-video-nvidiaG02-256.35-15.1.x86_64 * some "basic" effects such as the bouncing mouse pointer to provide feedback of an application starting leave a trail across the screen which goes away after a while * similar to the previous point, moving a window across the screen causes the same effect, even with the "don't show contents", etc * in average, the box is much slower when compared to its performance running OpenSUSE 11.0 - even running Folding@Home with 11.0 wasn't that heavy load and it allowed me to run lots of applications, as expected. Changing from one virtual desktop to another or waiting for the menus appearing when you right-click on the Desktop takes ages now... * Kopete, Pidgin and Empathy (haven't tried with aMSN yet) still fail when it comes to using the audio & video features. According to the "About"-menu, those have been compiled in but are shown as grayed out so you cannot select them. No idea why this happens... any library missing? * OpenGL screensavers won't start at all and, as a Hellraiser fan, I'm missing KLament =:-) and many other OpenGL ones... * all the nice Composite effects (wobbly windows, transparencies, etc) are gone and the error message is: --- Compositing is not supported on your system. Required X extensions (XComposite and XDamage) are not available. --- Although I found some links pointing to a solution. i.e.: http://forum.kde.org/viewtopic.php?f=111&t=10337 I still can't get them to work. [opensuse] webpin for 11.3 - does it work?

Guys, I have run webpin several times on 11.3 and it always comes back with "No results ..." Is it set up yet? Example: 11:30 zephyr:/home/backup/rpms/suse11.3> webpin kdelibs3 ... performing request on http://software.opensuse-community.org/ws/searchservice/Search/Simple/openS… results found for "kdelibs3" in openSUSE_113 Now I know kdelibs3 is in OBS, I installed it earlier and I can look at it here: http://opensuse.ca.unixheads.org/repositories/KDE:/KDE3/openSUSE_11.3/i586/… but it doesn't show up in webpin.... [opensuse] openSUSE 11.3 - nl80211: 'nl80211' generic netlink not found - Problem

Hello openSUSE folks, Just did a fresh install of openSUSE 11.3 on my Toshiba Satellite laptop today. Everything works but my wireless connection. I'm using Realtek provided driver for my Realtek RTL8191SE Wireless LAN 802.11n chipset. It worked perfectly in the previous openSUSE 11.2 installation. I tried to troubleshoot why it isn't working in 11.3 When I execute ifup wlan0 it gives me this type of message: Starting wpa_supplicant nl80211: 'nl80211' generic netlink not found Failed to initialize driver interface I'm using desktop kernel. May be something relevant to my case was disabled in it? Should I change it to the plain kernel? Thank you in advance for any help or hints. [opensuse] Kernel change?

So, I got my Windows xp reinstalled and working perfectly, and updated to 11.3. Tired of dual-boot, especially now that my job requires me to go more often to Windows, I looked into VirtualBox. Looks clear enough on vavai's web site and the VB site, but ... Vavai says I absolutely _have_ to have the kernel-default. Using his instructions, I find I have kernel-desktop installed. So I look for instructions to change kernel. The wiki is empty, as far as I can find (23 pages naming "kernel", none telling how to change the kernel without reinstalling). Is it possible to change kernels without reinstalling 11.3? I can, but it seems so extravagant... [opensuse] phoning through the computer with voice modem

Hello: I have a conventinal external serial line data/vioce/fax modem. Is it possible to make phone calls through the computer using this modem? I mean I would plug a headset into the computer's sound card and making the conversation through the headset. What program can do this? I have openSUSE 11.2. [opensuse] reconfig network for vmplayer

I feel like an idiot: I cannot find the command to reconfigure the vmware/vmplayer network. The IP address on the machine has changed, and vmware needs to use a different interface. I thought it was vmware-installer, but that seems to want to install a new thing. I want to reconfigure an installed thing. I know I did this when running vmware workstation. [opensuse] KDE3 on 11.3 ??

Hello SuSE people, Planning to install 11.3 soon. (upgrade from 11.2) I want to install KDE3 also. Sorry guys I just don't like KDE4. (sacrilegious I know) but what can I tell you. Tried it in 11.1 - blew it away. Tried it in 11.2, all the way up to 4.4. better, but still no cigar. Kept reverting to my comfortable and reliable11.0 with KDE3 Will try again in 11.3, hoping it will finally reach the maturity of KDE3, but, I still want my fallback to my comfortable and reliable KDE3. I've seen on the list that at least one of our members ( Dave Rankin) has installed KDE 3 on 11.3. Any tips on the procedure, sources, etc, on how I go about doing this? (Wiki?) (docs?)
