It never ever contains any error information beyond that. When the return value does not match 'count', then you must use 'errno' to see what the problem was. The action to take beyond that depends on if the file descriptor is blocking or not. For a disk file, and looking at your sample code, your writes are blocking. So the only two possible return values from write() are -1 and 'count'. [opensuse] X problem on Inspiron 8200 11.2 & nVidia driver

Just did a fresh install of 11.2 on a Dell Inspiron 8200. It has the GeForce 4Go chip with 64MB VRAM. It works fine with the oss driver, but when I install the nVidia driver, I get a blank screen. It even turns the backlight off. I'm assuming there is a problem with the resolution but I'm not sure. I can't get SaX2 to run at any setting with the nVidia driver. Once I remove it, it works fine. Guys, My old server died that was running openSUSE 11.1, I got my new server up and I am running now openSUSE 11.2, but my site isn't woking correctly. I am seeing this error in my logs.... [opensuse] md RAID 10 disk identity

I'm just planning how to set up my first md software RAID. There seems to be quite a learning curve about how to configure things and to anticipate the various admin actions that may be required (adding or removing drives, isolating failing drives etc). The documentation I've found seems to be scattered and is mostly reference material or isolated specifics. I'm also concerned about how up-to-date material is. For instance, I haven't found any docs that describe growing a RAID5, which is being discussed in another thread. So can anybody recommend any good introductory/tutorial material? FWIW, I'm planning a 4-disk RAID 10. Two disks are from one manufacturer and two from another, so one of my concerns is to make sure that two disks from the same manufacturer don't end up mirroring each other, in case there is a batch quality problem. [opensuse] Add more disks to RAID 5

Hi all I have setup a home server running a RAID 5 (3 disks). Now I would like to add 2 more disks to my RAID 5 but I'm not sertain how to do it. The RAID 5 is created of sda1, sdb1, sdc1 and I would like to add sdd1, sde1 - what process do you recommend? Both sdd1 and sde1 are currently mounted under /media/. So I assume sdd and sde should be unmounted, formated to ext4 and changed to '0xFD Linux RAID' - is this correct? Anything more I should do? Thanks a lot in advance. [opensuse] 11.2 on a Thinkpad T410

First off, I've looked at the HCL, I didn't see the T410 listed. I'm trying to get 11.2 installed on a Thinkpad T410. The install goes fine until it comes time to reboot after the installation of the bootloader. Once it starts to boot from the hard drive, it scrolls some kernel messages too quickly to read (but given the green text on the right of the screen, it doesn't appear that there are any failures). After scrolling, the screen goes blank and it doesn't proceed any further. It's not X.org, I've tried clt+alt+fn and ctl+alt+backspace+backspace to no avail. Booting to single user mode, runlevel 3, or using the vga=0x367 option doesn't work either. I tried holding down the space bar to encourage a boot (as was a common issue with a previous laptop in both Ubuntu and openSUSE) to no avail. The openSUSE GNOME LiveCD exhibits the same behavior, though the 11.0 LiveCD functions. SLED 11 works on the laptop just fine aside from theethernet and wireless controllers not showing up. I'm burning a copy of 11.3 Milestone 5 to test out. Is there anything else I can try? Thank you! -- C.M.
