[opensuse] HP only prints on HP paper

I have a deskjet F2280. Normal photocopy paper works fine. To get high quality prints, I have to use HP paper. It will not feed any other (I have tried kodak and epson which I'd like to use). Printer setup by yast. OS 11.2 with KDE 3.4.5 Is there any way I can fool it into thinking it's HP paper? [opensuse] KDE defaults after upgrade from 10.3 to 11.2

I did an update of a 10.3 system to openSUSE 11.2. I used the 11.2 DVD to do this (not zypper). As part of the update, I let the updater add the on-line 11.2 updates. No KDE repos are added. Just the 11.2 update that the install adds. For the most part all went well. Except that the desktop looks crappy, even for a user created after the update was completed. The most obvious problem is that the panel at the bottom is black, and the text on it black. Or, when leaving the desktop, the window is black with black text. ICONS are OK. There is something that is obviously not to plan. I also tried deleting the $HOME/.kde and $HOME/.kde4 directories, hoping that they would be better when the user logs in again. Nope. Same badness. Maybe this is not enough to remove to force regeneration of the user settings? Oddly, the root user has a correct appearance. No other user. I am guessing that when the system was updated, the default settings that a KDE user should get have not been properly updated. I do not know where to look for this, if that is even what it is. I am guessing that I could fiddle with a user's settings and get it looking good again. However, this is not really an option for this machine. We are trying to see how well it works to let users log with Windows Active Directory verification (which works so very nicely!). I would have to do this for each user after they create their login. Umm, no... I did follow many of the discussions about settings problems in kde 4. Most of those seemed to be about messing up old settings, and seemed to be more of an issue in older KDE 4 releases. I sort of thought the KDE in the 11.2 update directory had most of this sorted out. I use it on my 11.2-from-the-beginning system and have no complaints. I am guessing the damage was done in the initial KDE install in the 11.2 upgrade. But I might be wrong. [opensuse] KMail suddenly opens links with Quanta instead of Firefox

Running SLED 11 with Gnome. Using Kmail as mail client. Installed Quanta Plus 3.5.9 for web authoring. Now Kmail uses Quanta to open URL's instead of Firefos as i used to. I cant seem to find the place where Kmail stores what software to use. Gnome is set to use Firefox. -- /Rikard Johnels

Hi: I just bought this printer, thinking it would work right out of the box. I'm running SUSE 9.3 with CUPS, and it does not seem to support this model. Anybody got this printer to work? Any pointers would help. Best regards. -- Alfredo Cole-Tuckler

[opensuse] Latest OpenOffice missing text in bottom status bar

When editing document, the status bar at the bottom has places for text to be located, but the various places are empty. A few of them will get text when I click on them, but most stay empty. [opensuse] WiFi and KDE4 - systray icon

I recently tried out the latest PCLinuxOS release, and noticed something... in their KDE4 build, the systray icon for the WiFi is the familiar graduated bargraph style... it's very readable, easy to see signal strength on etc. Back to the openSUSE KDE4 builds, and we've got that useless circle thing that's basically unusable as a visual reference to see WiFi signal strength etc... it's just a white and blue circle... and the microscopic signal strength bar on the right is... well.. microscopic. What's the trick to enable or use a more "normal" and readable WiFi systray icon in KDE4/KNetworkManager? I've been poking Google and various forums, but haven't turned up anything useful yet. [opensuse] Thunderbird config and content file: openSUSE vs Ubuntu

Hi all, It appears that while under openSUSE the Thunderbird's files go into $HOME/.thunderbird in Ubuntu the are stored in $HOME/.mozilla-thunderbird . Not only that but the content appears somehow different - linking or copying content to the correct folder does not work. So, does anybody have any idea what all of this is about? What I am trying to accomplish is manage things in such a way as to allow users to use Thunderbird the same way whether they log into their account from a SUSE machine or an Ubuntu one.
