[opensuse] Backup Question

Guys. I have about twenty boxes I need to back up. I been told that cpio is go to do that, I currently use tar but by directory by directory casee, but I am having problems finding a good example of a back up script. I am looking to make a cpio image of the whole box. Lucky we have a SAN with storage that will be able to hold the back up. So far I have come up with this, but I don't think it best. What I like to ask the group is does anyone have a nice back up script that can share with me, or can you expand on my script. One more question can you do exclude with cpio like tar? [opensuse] why so many 32-bit packages in my install of 64-bit SUSE 11?

(aside: this is actually an install of SLES 11, so i hope it's not wildly inappropriate to ask about it here since i suspect it might also apply here.) i installed SLES 11 x86-64 on a gateway AMD and just now noticed that there are almost 200 packages installed with "32bit" as part of the package name -- i'm guessing because they're 32-bit, of course. i ran "rpm -q --whatrequires" on each one of them to figure out what could have forced them to be installed but, as far as i can see, there is *nothing* that requires any of those 32-bit packages. so ... why were they installed? is the same true for 64-bit opensuse? rday -- ======================================================================== Robert P. [opensuse] Help required re 11.2 MS7/KDE4.3 - deliberately posted here and not in Factory

PREAMBLE: Last Friday night (25/9 my time, Aust. EST), following some oS 11.1 updates (coincidental or not, dunno), I lost my (main) HD: on boot the next day the HD was "dead". I had to install 11.2 MS7 on new HDs[1] and, fortunately, I had a backup of my Thunderbird mail files (and Firefox), done ~week before, sitting on my flash disk so I am able to get 'back on-line'. However, while I recall reading about what I am about to ask prior to my "crash", the hassle over the past days of trying to get back a working system is making me ask the questions here rather than trying to search the archives for the answers. Sorry, but my max. stress levels ain't what they used to be :-( . PREAMBLE OFF What I about to ask has already been answered either in this forum or in factory - but I do not remember the solutions. My questions are: (1) I installed 11.2/MS7 from the KDE Live CD. Everything was OK until last night when I did a zypper up after which I suddenly lost the (?)plasma "box" which had all the applications I could click on to run them. The only thing on the Desktop was the desktop background, and I had the (?)taskmanager bar. Nothing I could think of would bring the original "box" back - "Folder View" was the only thing which would bring back the icons of the apps. I had in the "plasma box" (or whatever). Deleting .kde4 in /home didn't do a thing. Installing the widget "Folder View" didn't do a thing. How do I get back the original "box" (top, left, corner) containing the icons of the apps. I run?; (2) this installation of 11.2 is not running the nVidia driver for my card (6600). I installed the kernel-source, using YaST, but teying to compile the nVidia driver using the usual procedure results an error message that some bit is missing in the kernel-source and the nVidia driver cannot compile. And the nVidia driver is not updated via zypper :-( . Why isn't the kernel-source which YaST downloaded work as it has always done in the past :-( ? What do I need to do to get the nVidia driver for 11.2MS7 working so that I can test the desktop effects, et alia? (At the moment I am getting ~60fps when I should be getting ~3000fps); and finally, (3) where, in heaven's name, has the xorg.conf file been squirreled away?! Used to be in /etc/X11 but where is it now? (Sorry everyone, stress level are at bursting point :-( . Apoligies.) [1] I bought lat May 2 new Seagate HDs on which, I mentioned at the time, I could not install 11.1: at the first boot to continue 'part 2' of the installation, grub would come up with an error message. I gave up on the HDs as something one wastes money sometime in their life. When my main HD failed last week I decided to give those HDs one more chance with 11.2MS7- and this time it all seems to be OK. 11.2MS7 is operational.....so far....fingers crossed. Can I figure out the reason for the change for the better? No. Nothing has changed (same m/b, same everything) except that it is 11.2MS7 with the latest kernel.
