[opensuse] Linux Tool to check for bad blocks (ext3 & FAT32 File Systems)

I have a 500 GB SATA Hard Disk- this has partitions as follows: 12 GB, 18 GB, 20 GB, 35 GB, 55 GB - Linux (all ext3) 200 GB (FAT32) 160 GB (NTFS) This HD is used for installing both Windows XP & openSUSE 11.1 (x86). I suspect one or more partition (200 GB FAT & the 12 GB ext3) may have developed bad blocks (sectors). [opensuse] zyxel adsl modem as bridge?

All, my ageing Zyxel ADSL box is beginning to act a little strangely (lock-ups getting more and more frequent), so I'm thinking of replacing it. I like and I'm comfortable with the Zyxel boxes, so I was looking at the 660ME. [opensuse] Nikon Coolpix 900 questions

Hi all, I've got this camera which I control via gtkam. All seems well but for some reason camera settings (color, flash, etc.) seem to sometimes never take. For instance, you set it up to take a color picture and it continues spitting out monochrome images. What would this be? A dead BIOS battery (or some equivalent) inside the camera? Any ideas? Also, there does not seem to be a TWAIN driver for this one. Or is there? If not, are there other cameras that have a lens mount on the outside of the lens for which there exists a TWAIN driver? Thing is we are trying to attach this one to a microscope and hence need a mount that would make it possible. Thanks in advance for any help. I've update to the firefox 3.5 version found at http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/mozilla/openSUSE_11.1 mailto links no longer respond. I've dbl checked the network.protocol-handler.app.mailto it's set correct and other obvious settings mailto will not work. Anyone else run into this ? If so have a fix ? [opensuse] Upgrading KDE4 on 11.1

I apologise in advance that this has been covered before but I cannot find the solution. I have afresh installation of 11.1 64 bit withe KDE 4.1.3. I want to upgrade that to a newer version either 4.2 or 4.3 but I cannot resolve the dependency problems that occur whenever I try.. I have looked for howtos and googled around but cannot find the solution. Can somebody please point me to a way to do this ? Listmates, Since more and more countries seem to find it necessary to store information sent across the world wide web, I am contemplating switching to encrypted mail as much as possible. Under Linux, this is fairly easy. However, many of my contacts use Windows (I know, they shouldn't...but try telling them that). Does anyone know of a good, easy to use client for Windows XP/Vista that they could use? Preferably freeware, of course. I have been googling around for it, tried download.com, pgpi.org, but could not find anything matching the above criteria. Pgpi.org seems to offer a freeware client, but when trying to download, it turns out to be trialware. Any suggestions? Hi there! I'm writing you because I have a problem. I'm new in linux (windows user all my life) I have problems with the CPU. I have a DELL Inspiron 9400 Centrino Duo and use it mostly for internet things Sometimes when I'm using the web broser (firefox) or other simple program the CPUs start runnig at 100% each This causes that everything starts to work very slowly I check the monitoring system and I can't find the problem. When I was using windows this problem didn't happen. [opensuse] Miro is installed, can't make it play

I have installed Miro, and downloaded a first video as an exercise. It turns out to be a Quicktime clip. Clicking on this file's icon brings up Kaffeine with an empty black screen; clicking on the Play button causes a single line of text to appear, identifying the file. Nothing more happens. I tried to restart Miro, which presented an error message reading: "An unknown error prevented Miro from startup", and inviting me to file a bug report. (A short browse in Miro's bug reports shows a LOT of trouble.) If someone has an idea what has happened, I'd like to hear about it. All, In my 11.1 workstation I upgraded to the latest kde4.3b2 yesterday. Now when I try to run konqueror I get: Cannot load library /usr/lib64/kde4/konq_aboutpage.so: (/usr/lib64/libkhtml.so.5: undefined symbol: _ZNK15KdeUiProxyStyle10metaObjectEv) And the few graphics I've tried to display don't work. Anyone know what is going on? [opensuse] kmail 4.2.4: inbox messages with unknown date

My inbox is full of messages with unknown date. In fact only two had a date. this obviously happened after the recent blackout (I think). When I click on the unknown date mails they suddenly remember their date and are sorted correctly. Now I cant do that for all messages, they are too many, so I tried rebuild index. But what that did was make the messages that had obtained a date forget it again... [opensuse] OpenOffice 2.4 - Howto reduce menu font size in KDE4

Listmates, Due to an openoffice 3.1 crash, I had to uninstall ooo3.1 and reinstall ooo2.4 to get ooo to start. Now in 2.4 all of the menu fonts are 12 or 13 pt and huge to look at. My kde-control-center fonts settings are 9 pt. In kde3 I recall using a gtk app to change the size of the font appearance in openoffice apps. I can't find the app in the KDE4 menus. What is that app? [opensuse] Losing mount points on 11.1 when switching from wired <-> wireless

This weekend I upgraded from OpenSuse 10.3 to 11.1. Overall the upgrade went very well and most things are working well, even my laptop's card reader is working which is nice. I do have a couple issues. One is with jexec, which I need to do some googling on. The other, is with Network Manager. I occasionally switch from wireless to wired and vice versa. Both NICs are configured with the same ip address. On 10.3 when I switch from one to the other, it was very seamless. On 11.1 when I switch I lose connection to pidgin, which isn't a big deal because it just reconnects, but I also lose connection to my nfs and smb mounts, so I have to remount them. Is there a way to keep the mounts from disconnecting or to reconnect automatically? Is there a way to connet to a desktop running PC-DUO? I have to acces several machines running XP and PC-DUO at work. I can (of course) use the PC-DUO software under a MS XP machine, but as i haul a Linux'ed laptop i want to have the same possibility. As it is now i am not able to install any from of VNC on the windows machines. (Due to certification of platform, software and shit (blame it on the IT dept, not me)) -- /Rikard Johnels

Hi, Maybe I wrong, but I think very strange that when I setting Downloads Path on About Me configuration to a new directory, like ~/Download, all the directories and files of my home (~) are moved to that directory. I think that the Downloads Path is the directory when I put the files in internet download process. This a bug or not? Hi all, my desktop PC running OpenSuSE 11.0 lost the motherboard so it doesn't finish the boot process properly. So I took the internal hard disk and put it into another desktop computer. It started to boot up magically :-) but then the process said that it couldn't find the disk with SuSE on it...so I was given the option to fall back to another (discovered) device. Answering "y" to continue also ended up with a shell prompt where I could do nothing... After that I booted from the OpenSUSE 11.0 DVD and run a "Repair System" ... AFAIK with that the boot loader should be fixed and allow me to boot to KDE but it hangs at "Starting MySQL..." :-/ I also guess that I have to run sax2 -r because the new system has a different graphics card... funny enough the YaST2 GUI runs well when in recovery mode... So, is there any solution to my problem here or am I better off reinstalling the OS? Hi, did just install Firefox on my opensuse 11.1 system, and noticed that it doesn't save any entered user/password combination, and it doesn't even prompt me to do so. When I call the "clear private data" window (in "tools"), the field "clear saved passwords" is listed, but not available (greyed out). "Remember passwords for sites" in preferences -> security is checked. I tried to re-install Firefox and did delete ~/.mozilla, without any success. Does anybody know what could be wrong here?
