[opensuse] Disk dying ?

Hi, In a bit more than a year, my parent's laptop stopped booting after fsck a partition three times now. After the first time I installed 10.3. Later I manually ran fsck and let it repair the partition. Since I never had this on several other PC's I suspect the disk is dying so I ran smartctl's extended test. [opensuse] Explorer 4.0 Mouse w/8 buttons? Any tricks?

Listmates: I purchased a couple of ms explorer 4.0 usb/ps2 mice that were being clearanced ($6.99) and now I am experimenting with all the buttons, etc. on my laptop (11.0 kde3). Amazingly all but 2 of the buttons have functionality by just plugging it in. My best summary of the default functionality is: left button: normal right button: normal scroll wheel: normal wheel button: normal fwd thumb button: page forward in Firefox rear thumb button: page back in Firefox left tilt of scroll wheel: nothing right tilt of scroll wheel: nothing I have found some old posts (2004) regarding the need for EVDEV to be enabled in the kernel and it is: 20:18 alchemy:/usr/src/linux> grep -i evdev .config CONFIG_INPUT_EVDEV=y What other tricks can I do with this thing? [opensuse] installing packages

I have just installed opensuse 11.1 I cannot install any new software, since the 'install software' utility does not start. I have tried to get kpackage from the suse web site, to be installed by 'rpm -i', but it requires a library (kde4-kpackage-4.2.0-28.20.i586) with a version that is not available. Any hints? What I mean is an embedded viewer. When used one had the arrows to change slide in the taskbar and also a zoom with "fit in the window" > to adjust a photo. Although Microsoft originally gifted Novell $240 million to help fight Red Hat, and later added another $100 million to the pile, it doesn't seem to be enough to revive Novell's fortunes, as the company reported disappointing first-quarter earnings and a slide even in its Linux business, which had been growing fairly well. "The pipe fell apart," declared Novell CEO Ron Hovsepian, as The Register reports. That's an intriguing statement, as other open-source companies with which I work have seen their pipelines grow tremendously, as enterprises look to open source to save money and boost productivity through the downturn. Novell now plans to cut prices aggressively to increase its market share, according to Hovsepian. Part of the problem, however, is that Novell isn't really an open-source company, and it doesn't pretend to be one. Listmates, I had asked earlier if fish was working under KDE4.2 and everyone said yes. Has anyone gotten it to work with quanta??? Are there any other programs (other than Norton Ghost & partimage) that can image a Linux partition to NTFS) and restore from image properly ? Most of the free space on my HD's is on NTFS partitions. [opensuse] Plan for building Compiz 0.8 rpms XGL v. Compiz repo

J., List: Does openSuSE know if it will be building compiz 0.8 rpms and, if so, will there be builds with and without nomad in the X11/Compiz and X11/XGL repositories, respectively? The compiz team has been doing great work while navigating the normal troubled-waters that come with maturity and I was just curious if we will get rpms to be able to see the latest. If there isn't a plan for building them yet, I would suggest continuing the process of building the X11/XGL set *without* nomad to get around the emerald issue and then building with nomad in the X11/Compiz repository as usual. That seems to work fine. If there are rpms that need testing, just drop a note to the list and I would be happy to test before 0.8 is released into the repositories where it will be pulled in with a package update. Also, if testing of 0.8 shows incompatibilities with current features, etc., could we get a README or release notes dropped in the repositories to give a heads-up on any gotchas? Thanks. -- David C.
