[opensuse] Disk dying ?
Hi, In a bit more than a year, my parent's laptop stopped booting after fsck a partition three times now. After the first time I installed 10.3. Later I manually ran fsck and let it repair the partition. Since I never had this on several other PC's I suspect the disk is dying so I ran smartctl's extended test. Why don't you get a new disk? This one's only 40GB, then you use Ghost and try to copy the files over. Ghost is on Hiren's BootCD. Errors on the disk are common when you don't save a file correctly either... How many are you getting.. Thanks for the link, but how do you read the table from the disk ? I'm confused because all 'VALUEs' are the same as 'WORST'. So I looked at 'RAW_VALUE' where the 'Reallocated_Event_Count' is 1, so 1 bad sector realloacted isn't that bad. And Reallocated_Sectors_Ct is 0 (raw value). Or should I read this as 'tried to reallocate one sector, but failed' ? I compared with my own laptop where I put in a new drive about a month ago. No, it means "the worst value so far is:" - it doesn't mean that parameter failed. A parameter has failed when the value is lower than the treshold.

Smartctl does not show anything wrong, as far as I can see. I don't think your errors are related to that. Well, in my case, I get errors due to bad ribbon cables, those do not show in an smartctl test. - -- Cheers, Carlos E.
