[opensuse] changing video formats

Hi all, I think I know that "transcode" does this, but last time I asked a question on that list the reply was effectively "if you have to ask, you shouldn't be using transcode", so I thought I'd try here. I'd like to recode some digital video from the full resolution of my camera down to something less. Basically I have DVD stuff I burned ages ago using something under windows (Nero, I think?) and it's 640x480, or some such. But anyway, it's big, and high res. I'd like to be able to shrink it down to something smaller, mainly in terms of space, but I'd be happy enough to lose resolution too, say to 320x240? It would be useful if I could turn it back into a more "ordinary" format, like mpg, maybe. Any suggestions? And if I have to use "transcode" is there a comprehensible manual for the trivial user? [opensuse] SuSE 10.3 and running installed WinXP virtual

I'm trying to avoid booting into Windows XP for several reasons, but need to run TurboTax and Internet Explorer. TurboTax will not run in Wine/Crossover Office. So far I've tried VMware Server 2, doesn't support setup of raw disks (i.e. actual partitions, not virtual disks, a file on the host filesystem), though may be able to run legacy setups. And VMware Server 1.0.8 sets up okay but won't boot. Somewhere I ran across a note that it cannot boot from SCSI raw disks, only IDE ones. And since some kernel update, even ATA disks appear to be SCSI disks (the /dev/hdX => /dev/sdX change). Booting the virtual machine shows the BIOS screen, then GRUB, then nothing: no activity, no prompt, no echoing the keyboard. Why a Windows partition should display part of the GRUB console is beyond me. Has anyone successed in running a Windows XP Pro partition in some kind of virtual machine, VMware or other? This is an older Intel CPU without virtualization hardware support. [opensuse] Handling larg email Inbox files

I'm using OpenSuse 11.0 and Evolution 2.22.1.1 I've gotten into what's probably a bad habit of letting important emails accumulate in my Evolution Inbox. The search feature is quite good, and I can usually find an important email quite easily. The problem is, even though I try to create sub directories, there seems to be a limit on the file size that evolution can handle. Last week Evolution wouldn't crashed and wouldn't re-start. I went into the .mail / inbox file and moved the 2gig+ inbox file to another directory. Evolution then started, recreated the inbox file and functions as normal. The question is, is there a known application that I can use to access the old 2gig+ email file? I've got a number of emails in there that I'd hate to lose. [opensuse] 11.1 install stage2 - kernel oops in attach_nobh_buffers() - has anyone else seen this?

I've just been installing two new office machines, and both produced this problem - a kernel oops (null ptr in attach_nobh_buffers() during stage2, even at exactly the same point (postfix config at 81%). Totally reproducable. It sounds a lot like what this patch is meant to fix: Dave Kleikamp (1): vfs: Don't call attach_nobh_buffers() with an empty list but that didn't go into the kernel until 2.6.29-rc4, which barely a week old. [opensuse] backups via rsync leaving old junk in the backup?

All, I have a directory that I backup every night via rsync to a remote server a couple thousand miles away. (For about 2 years now.) Its a dynamic directory with files created and deleted. I just noticed that the main directory is 247GB, but the remote copy is 354GB. I assume rsync can cause the extra files on the remote to be deleted? I'm currently using: rsync -avh --delete-after --stats --links --partial-dir=<transfer_dir> --timeout=1800 <BACKUP_DIR> <remote_user>@<remote_server>/<remote_dir> Any idea what I need to change? FYI: My local dir is actually the destination of a rdiff-backup run, so it has tons of old revisions in it. [opensuse] Two workspaces, one monitor.

All, I'm one of those avid and outspoken dual-monitor users. What makes it so useful for me, isn't the second monitor per se, but the extra workspace. But sometimes I need to (begrudgingly) use a single monitor computer. So the question is, can I replicate this functionality using one (wide screen) monitor, and preferably not having to lose my gnome/kde DE. So: I essentially want to be able to split my wide screen monitor in two. So I can quickly maximize two applications side by side. For bonus points, I'd like to be able to watch movies (or even play games, not that I do that) with it spanning across both "work spaces" (my whole monitor). Insights? Thoughts? [opensuse] Wireless connections are not started

Hi, I've installed Opensuse 11.1 on a Dell Latitude E5400 Notebook. There are several problems: 1. Opensuse could not resize the Vista partition. I used kubuntu for that. 2. Opensuse broke the MBR. I had to use the backup to restore it. 3. The main problem is that wireless connections are not started: After the first reboot after installation everything worked fine. I clicked on my ESSID, entered the password and went online after some seconds. After the next reboot it did not work. Clicking on the ESSID in knetworkmanager had no effect. There was no spinning gear as normally. Just the gray globe. Some people on irc mentioned that some upgrades could cause that. Therefore I downgraded everything back to the shipped version. After that the connection worked again. But now I have restarted the machine again and again no connection is established. The strange thing is, that switching to the traditional ifup network mode allows me to go online by the wireless card. The problem only shows with NetworkManager. Unfortunately I switch networks very often and have to use the NetworkManager. Has anyone similar problems and suggestions to resolve the problem?
