Bad blocks on a ReiserFS volume. How to retrieve files?

I have a large hard-disk (120 GB) on which some blocks went bad. Now, it cannot be mounted. Attached is what debugreiserfs says. What can I do; I'm newbie to reiserfs architecture. I thought that ReiserFS keeps copies of the superblock or something, like ext2/3 does. reiserfsck says "error occured looks like hardware problem. bread cannot read block 13271040". That's the actual number it displays. PS I have asked the same question on the reiserfs-list, but it's extremely low traffic. Maybe someone here knows more. Sorry SuSE: 9.1 is Waste of time and money!

I am sorry to conclude that my upgrade from SuSE 9.0 Pro to 9.1 Pro has been waste of time and money for me, so far. The same I have to say about the free SuSE "Installation support". The reason is that my SuSE 9.1 installation only detects 1 of my 3 SCSCI devices (as I wrote in another subject on this forum: http://lists.suse.com/archive/suse-linux-e/2004-May/3254.html) Yamaha 4416S CDRW recorder detected HP DVD Writer 100i NOT detected Epson 1640SU scanner NOT detected It's rather stupid. I have installed 9.1 using the DVD disk just in the HP DVD drive, but after the installation of 9.1, the KDE/Konqueror /media/recorder cannot access it and YaST2 cannot install additional software from it. Only one "Cdrecorder" is found in My computer and that is the Yamaha 4416 drive, which the KDE/Konqueror file manager assign as /media/recorder11. I am sure 9.1 is the reason, as I hadn't this problems with 9.0. I have tried both an update and two several new installation of 9.1. Neither SJDS nor Windows on the same multiboot PC have problems to detect these devices. In my opinion SuSE should therefore debug 9.1 better and longer, and not leave the problems to the customers. I see SuSE notes on their web saying that they know SCSI scanners are not detected in 9.1. But regarding my HP DVD writer problem, the SuSE support (as usual) don't take the responsibility and argue that this problem (a combination of IDE disk and SCSI devices) isn't included in their free installation support! This sounds remarkable, and I have never had a modern PC of so simple model or configuration that it has fitted the limited rules for the free installation support. Terje J. Hanssen

[SLE] RealPlayer G2 on SuSe 6.2

Yesterday, I finally got sound going on my Linux setup. I downloaded RealPlayer G2 and it worked beautifully. Today, RealPlayer run but no sound coming out. All other sound functions still work. I can still play my CD, have system sound BUT no sound when I run RealPlayer. /var/log/message said kernel: Sound: DMA (output) timed out - IRQ/DRQ config error? but KDE sound still work. I have re-installed RealPlayer 3 times now, still no sound when I run the RealPlayer. Any help is appreciated. Adding fonts?

Hi all, Reading some mails on the GIMP mail list, I ran across the procedure to install some more fonts for not only Gimp, but the system and StarOffice to use also. Well, I installed the fonts, went to the shell and issued the command xset fp+ <font directory> and then the rehash command and all fonts are there! Ok, that went well, but each time I restart the system, I have to do it all over again? Hi, I am trying to set up a simple repo, I read on the opensuse site about a binary called genIS_PLAINcache, because I can't see to find it or the package yast2-packmanager either. Can someone help. It is eminently fair and for the most part, accurate. I think any inaccuracies could be attributable to unfamiliarity rather than bias. If this reviewer hadn't been what I would call a 'Power-user', and had instead been someone converting from Windows, not only would they probably not have had a successful install, but would have an article that Microsoft would probably have printed in full page ads throughout the world. [opensuse] 11.1 on a thinkpad T500

installed it yesterday on my brand new thinkpad, and most of the basic stuff seems to be working : tested the wired/wireless connection :ok. can write DVD's, sound is ok, hibernation and sleep : ok , sdcard reader : ok, and last but not least, video graphics, weel that's a special case with this laptop, it includes 2 graphic controller : 1 discrete, the ati hd3650 and am integrated controller , intel mobile GM45 express chipset. i knew i wasn't going to get this switchable graphics thing in order... by default, the installation chooses the intel chipset. which works ok, but doesn't give you the power of the ATI. i changed the bios setting to discrete graphics ( swichable off ). when booted into command line, i could run sax and it installed the correct ATI drivers. but the next reboot set me back to the intel chipset, and indeed the bios was back to switchable graphics enabled ? jef peeraer -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe(a)opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help(a)opensuse.org

[opensuse] kde4 konqueror will not connect via proxy

The proxy works for firefox but not for konq in 11.0 kde 4. I've tested the proxy via yast and it works fine. Also, other browsers recognise it. Bug? Today I finally installing opensuse 11.1 kde 4.2 in all machines. Q. Using yast software manager to update the system very often I get a curl error and a connection time out. I retry and everything is OK. Everything is working OK but I had to be behind the screen to interact all the time with this connection time outs. I do not remember anything like that previously. [opensuse] Annoying Desktop behaviour of Programmes

Hi all, what is beginning to be quite annoying is working with different Desktops. I have different working groups organised on a desktop each. I often have OpenOffice Writer, Calc and Firefox open on various desktops. When I open up a link on Desktop 1 in Thunderbird, a window opens on the latest FireFox I used prevously; the one on the other desktop I used last. I have to hunt down in which desktop it opened by going to each desktop and activate it. This also happens when I open an OpenOffice document or calc file with konqueror. Closing all apps on the desktops before going to another desktop defeats the purpose of having different desktops - or have I missed the rational behind different desktops. For over 2 weeks now, there's been an OpenOffice update, but due to dependencies, I can't get it. Now, since yesterday, there's a new kernel, (I need the nVidia version) but because of a dependency, which isn't listed, I can't get that either. Can we assume someone is going to fix all the dependency issues.....soon?! I performed a fresh install of opensuse 10.3 and proceeded to go to http://software.opensuse.org/search for the codecs I selected and executed Codec-Audio-Video.ymp. During the installation process I received a dialogbox with the following major message and assoc options. I seem to recall a week or so ago, there was a complaint about 3.5.10, but there was very little follow up. That leads me to believe all is safe. [opensuse] YaST (Software Management) and zypper give different package update results

YaST does not show the same packages that zypper (through konsole, after su -) does. This was after I updated to KDE 4.2; also have KDE 3.5 installed. # rpmdb --rebuilddb # zypper refresh -b # zypper up Doing the above, after su to root from init 3, gives a totally different set of packages (which are correct, going by the version numbers), than what YaST (GUI : YAST --> Software Management) shows. Search showed me the yast2 Repair Tool at http://packages.opensuse-community.org/packageinfo.jsp?checksum=b508b5f52d3… . Any idea what this does ? how I can repair YaST GUI to accurately show updates and packages ? [opensuse] getting new laptop

i will be buying a new laptop in a week or so. In stage 1 I hope to run a dual boot system, some windoze version and then suse 10.3, probably 32 bit but that's not final, the 64 bit ver is not only faster, but it is approaching the 100% compatibility mark. no, thanks, i will not try 11.0 or 11.1 yet, i need a kde that has *no* hooks to kde4 until at least kde 4.4 as they mark them, but let's not digress. In stage 2 I hope to run suse 10.3 as the base system, then the plan is to load up vmware and run 2 or 3 virtual oss'es, and to include the "default" windoze partition as a vmware option. The plan is to Buy a core-duo from Dell or ibm/lenovo. 2.4 ghz plus, 4 gb ram, 300-500 gb hard drive, wifi. since there will be graphics involved, i might even go to a 17" lcd. blue ray read a possibility, but definitely not a must have. I first posted this problem on 23 Dec 2008. Since then, it has recurred every other day or so, sometimes more than once a day. KDE freezes up. Windows fail to respond to close requests. Window termination messages appear. System slows to a crawl. KDE does not shutdown. Today, I managed to enter a command-line shutdown. The command was accepted and I got the "shutdown in 0 seconds" message. But no further shutdown processing occurred. As a diagnostic, I've created a bash script that saves ps output in a file every three seconds. CPU usage and swap usage figures do not seem excessive. Are there better diagnostics I can run? If this is a loop in Xorg, is there a way to identify the block of code it is in? - - - Here is my original message, dated 23 Dec 2008: I have a severe intermittant problem and need help. I hope I'm posting this report on the correct list. I installed 10.2 about a month ago on a new computer. Two or three times a week, I get locked out. It happened twice yesterday. KDE first slows to a crawl then quickly freezes with active screens incompletely rendered. Usually I lose only the keyboard, but last night I also lost the mouse. Either way, the system dies. I'm sometimes able to press Ctrl-Alt-F1 just before the freeze. Even "top", running in that console under root, stopped updating its display. "xorg", with 0.7 CPU percent, was at the top of the display when the lock-out occurred. Sometimes I am able to close several KDE applications before the complete freeze. Was not able to log out, however.
