[opensuse] CUPS printer search problem on OpenSuSE 11.1

Hello listmates, Apparently, unlike under many other versions of Linux including SuSE 10.3, under 11.1 CUPS is not capable of scanning the network for available printers. [opensuse] KDE4 Mouse pointer acceleration file?

Hi, Seems the last email didn't make it to the list from 18 Jan :( On oS 11.0 I have used the Configure Desktop panel under KDE4 to enter the advanced properties of the attached PS/2 mouse. Here I set the Pointer Acceleration from the default of 2.0x to 6.8x and OK it. Mouse pointer immediately speeds up and I can navigate with ease. On each occasion that I have restarted the box after that the mouse pointer acceleration reverts back to the default of 2.0x speed. The Defaults and Reset button on the KDE window accomplish the same thing ie they revert the values back to the default. I hsve used a friend and Google has not been able to find a solution. I also tried to go into the /etc/sysconfig files via YAST, l;ook for the mouse entry and see if there was an entry there I could change. Given this is a single user box and I normally log in as the same non-root user each time, I am wondering if there is not a file I can edit with KWrite that will stop the mouse pointer acceleration resetting to the default, or at least keep it at the level I set it at after a reboot? hi list, i think, there is a bug in the latest factory-kernel 2.6.27.13-2 from http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/Kernel:/HEAD/openSUSE_Factory/. at least the kernel source has a bug, i think. i tried to install latest nvidia-driver 180.22 on an opensuse11.1 x86_64 system. former kernel 2.6.27.12-1 had no problems with this. but this time, it was not possible to load nvidia kernel module. the installation-script stopped, and told me that the built kernel module can't be loaded. there were also warnings about missing symbols at compile time. this is the relevant part of dmesg-output when loading the driver: nvidia: Unknown symbol pv_mmu_ops nvidia: Unknown symbol pv_cpu_ops nvidia: Unknown symbol pv_irq_ops nvidia: Unknown symbol pv_lock_ops it seems, the above symbols are missing. this was not the case with 2.6.27.12-1. i had to downgrade kernel to latest available 2.6.27.7-9 from oss-repo. with this version building the nvidia driver also was no problem. right now i am writing this mail with this setup. there must have been some changes between 2.6.27.12-1 and 2.6.27.13-2 which have something to do with these missing symbols. does anybody know anything about this error? -- einen schönen Tag noch DI Rainer Klier Und bitte keine TOFU-Mails (http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/TOFU) -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe(a)opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help(a)opensuse.org

[opensuse] linux in multiboot

Hello, Currently I'm running OpenSuse 11.1 32bit on an 2GHz AMD Athlon64 with 3 GiB RAM. I have 3 SATA disks: 112 GiB + 112 GiB + 186 GiB. sda1, sdb1 and sdc1 are 1 GiB and form md0 (RAID1) where /boot lives. The rest of the disk space lives in LVM. I have: /dev/system/root = / = 50 GiB /dev/system/home = /home = 100 GiB /dev/system/swap = swap = 6 GiB That leaves me with 251 GiB unpartitioned in LVM. I would like to try 64bit Linux in a multiboot configuration, while still keeping my 32bit installation. I would make another LVM partition and share /boot, /home and swap. I could also run various other Linux distributions (Debian, Ubuntu and Gentoo are on my list). I think I won't have a lot of troble seting this up, but there is one thing that worries me a bit: the /boot partition with the kernels and the grub config. 1 GiB is room enough for a lot of different kernels, but I'm worried that different Linux distributions have different ways of "automagically" configuring grub. [opensuse] novell web site broke as heck

So, I go to log in to the novell web site to order the latest retail boxed dvd, as I have done since at least 9.1 But I get presented with some new form that demands I fill in some "required" profile info (that they have been living without all these years up to now somehow...) before allowing me to proceed. So, web forms and marketing databasing and registration annoy the hell out of me and I absolutely hate crap like this, but it's universal so I fill it in anyways even though I _hate_ doing so. I'm feeling so magnanimous that I even fill in the phone number field even though it was not marked as a required field. The submit fails and the redrawn form says more info required and the phone number field is empy. So apparently it wants a phone number despite being marked as optional, and although I had actually filled in a phone number, apparently it didn't like the format I had used with no dashes, spaces, or perens. Well now I'm annoyed and perversely don't want to fill in the phone number field (even though my cmpanies main public phone number is of course no secret), and my initial tolerance for playing along and cooperating with these forms which I hate is now gone and I'm back to my real feling of hating the whole form, let alone any particula field. So I hit the feedback link on the page and submit a feedback about the form being broken. The _feedback_ form breaks! 500 internal server error OK maybe my long winded message with cut & paste copy of my filled-in form with error message was too long for the feedback form to accept (although there is no message size limit displayed on the page). So I try to submit a new fedback about _that_ with the difference being a very short and plain message with no ususual cut&paste's in the message body, just a short sentence. THAT fails! Awsome! Why didn't I think of that ingenius way to improve my own companies support statistics? Just make the support and feedback mechanisms broken and voila! Hardly any support calls or negative feedback! Pure genius! I wonder if this last ditch manual email to support(a)novell.com will bounce? I give up. I just buy the retail box sets just to be nice and because I appreciate the work that goes into the distribution. But I don't need them. I don't think I've ever actually used one of the retail dvd's to do an actual install. I always do net installs from my own mirror or else I had already downloaded an iso weeks or months before I received my nice box. They're just there to look pretty on my shelf. I'm sure I could still order the box without logging in under my usual profile, or I'm sure simply filling in that phone number with dashes or some other formatting will satisfy the form, but now I'm all annoyed and uncooperative. So if the site wants to annoy me out of buying stuff, that's really no skin off my nose. Brian K. [opensuse] Mandatory updates in 11.1

Hello, Today I started my 10.3 openSuse system and was greeted with the orange triangle telling me that there are 5 updates. On my openSuse 11.1 system the triangle never shows up. I cannot believe that there are no updates for that system so I assume something is lacking. [opensuse] 11.0 - Can't make A4 paper default go away

Whenever I try to print for the first time in a new app or new user, nothing happens if I don't remember to go into the app's paper setup and select the proper paper. It seems this is because I own no A4 paper nor A4 paper trays, yet the system defaults to A4 paper. In YaST2 printer, after waiting eternally for repo data I didn't ask for to download, I select printer options for my only printer, and driver options default paper in your printer is grayed out and set to A4. How do I change the global default to letter? What mysterious file is set to A4? How do I eradicate the possibility of using A4 paper?
