Hi, I have a laptop Dell Inspiron 1720 that using SuSE 11, I keep getting this error whenever i activate the desktop effects (compiz), here is my hardware. I've googled the web and found several howtos and have attempted to follow their instructions. I installed Swat and played around with that. Finally, I discovered GAdmin-Samba. Not much help there either. I decided to try yet another restart, forgot the 're', and got the following responses. This looks like a clue but I can't figure out what it's trying to tell me. Would someone have a look at the exchanges below and tell me if it really is a clue or am I still clueless. (Sorry. I couldn't resist.) Aany help appreciated. I don't see any requests from the Vista machines in the dhcp server logs. Is there a dhcp server broadcast that I need to set in the server that the Vista machines can recognize? [opensuse] hardware scanner

I'm looking for a hardware scanner for Linux. I tried lshw but for some reason it doesn't think I have any memory installed. Actually, I don't want to reboot and I want to know what kind of memory I have in this computer (DDR or DDR2). But a scanner could come useful, regardless. Any help appreciated. -- Michael S. [opensuse] Grub Confusion

I'm having confusion with Grub (will try to keep this from seeming like a shell game). I've got two 11.0 installs. When I do updates on one (esp kernel) the other one won't boot after restart. Just using Suse updater here. The first install on sda2 was upgraded from a previous 10.3 install. The second was a fresh test install of 11.0 on sda6. Originally I had the 10.3 install on sda2. Then I did the fresh test install of 11.0 on sda6. At that point grub was booting both installs fine, and the 11.0 grub on sda6 was updated after kernal updates, for both installs. However after I did the upgrade on sda2 from 10.3 to 11.0, the references to initrd... and vmlinuz... are not being updated, Yast is getting confused. This is worsened by the confusion I'm having over straitening this out. When I do a kernel update on sda2, it changes the sda2/boot/grub/menu.1st, but the MBR does not get updated, it is taking that from sda6/boot. If I do an kernel upgrade on sda6, it will update the booting grub, but then I can't boot into the sda2 install( the one I use). So, I have several times since, manually updated the /boot/grub/menu.1st on sda6 pointing it to the right boot parameters on sda2, but would like to straighten this out for good. I can delete the test install on sda6, but want to make sure I have the correct grub files on sda2. What is the best way for me to fix this issue? [opensuse] Installing local RPM's using Yast

This is an old problem that has re-emerged. Saving an rpm to disk and then clicking on it opens up a dialogue for installing via yast. Clicking on that and entering the password, it does all the repository checks and all that stuff and then comes back and says: Following packages haven't been found on the medium: xxxxxxxx Does anyone know of a solution or is this a bug-report job? Hi list, - and a HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL! - I'm puzzled by md5sums. I've downloaded openSuSE11 (both 32 and 64 bit versions) and openSuSE11.1 (32/64 too). - I get the same odd errors with 11 as with 11.1. This is my situation: I try to verify the md5sum of openSuSE11(i386/32), it should be ed6a5b3feb668866df812b1c2aed9d7f openSUSE-11.0-DVD-i386.iso but using "md5sum openSUSE-11.0-DVD-i386.iso", I get: a38623810009842eeb1542a2052cfc2d openSUSE-11.0-DVD-i386.iso This, of course, is wrong. If I do a "md5sum -c openSUSE-11.0-DVD-i386.iso", I get 500+ lines saying the this or that -rpm file could not be read, general i/o error or so" Now if I burn an ISO DVD, it verifies correctly when doing the "check media" before installation (!). Installation starts fine, but in some cases breaks later on, but not always... I use K3B for burning, it reports a sound md5sum. I downloaded the isos from mirrors and directly from SuSE too. I downloaded from two different locations, albeit to the same PC (my laptop). I stored the received files (during download) onto the harddisk and also onto a USB stick. Same story. As you can tell, I've done quite a few downloads...All the downloaded files yield the same md5sum (using md5sum without the -c flag), never mind what media I store onto. And regardless of wherefrom and my method of downloading. As of now, I'm not really able to install openSuSE11(1) to anything, as I can't seem to get this right. Questions: a) The md5sums listed on the openSuSE web are (of course) correct b) what's the correct and proper way of verifying the md5sums? c) I used wget, firefox directly and a FF-extension called DownThenAll for downloading. What would be your recommendation?
