[opensuse] Introduction

Hi, I'm an Austrian sysadmin living in Montpezat (South France). I'm 100% GNU/Linux since 2001. My job currently consists in migrating public libraries around here from Microsoft Windows (or nothing at all) to Linux. Until recently, I've mostly been using Slackware, CentOS, Debian and Arch Linux, and I'm familiar with most of the major distributions. That is... except SuSE. Curiously enough, I never gave it a shot. Recently I've had a discussion with two sysadmins, who praised the good quality of openSuSE 10.3 on a desktop. So right now I want to give it a shot myself. The idea behind it is that I'm looking for something more comfortable to maintain, that doesn't need hours of tweaking (and tons of build scripts to write). I'll probably have a few questions in the near future, but I'll post them one at a time as they arise. [opensuse] bug in opensuse 11.0 RC1

Just a quick question. Having tried out opensuse 11.0 RC1, I think I have uncovered a bug and I just wanted to check if I should report it through the normal bug reporting methods or is there something specific setup for developmental programs? In case anyone is curious, my laptop has a intel 3945 wireless card. It configures etc. without any problems however, whenever I reboot the network card fails and I have to rerun yast network setup, even without needing to change anything because the setting in yast are retained. I have to manually setup routing and dns (edit the /etc/resolv.conf file). [opensuse] administer vista from opensuse

Hello, My 88 years old mother just bough a new computer. On the old one, she used openSUSE, but on the new she will use Vista (she needs to play some sort of power point files that I simply can't make play music on opensuse, even in wine - given her age, I can't ask her too much) I know little about vista, but there is some sort of "remote admin" is this feature usable from my own openSUSE? [opensuse] swap file placement

To get ready for my project, on my test box I wiped out the hard drive and installed the live CD. I noticed the placement of the swap file was first. What is the reasoning behind this? Hi, I have some suggestions regarding the problem: 1. Have you disabled IPv6? That may cause the problem with the browser. http://en.opensuse.org/Disable_IPv6_for_Firefox http://en.opensuse.org/SDB:Disabling_IPv6_completely 2. I am not sure if you are using a router, perhaps its an old one. In which case you might have a windows stacking problem. To fix this, open a konsole window, go to root, and type in this command and hit enter: echo 0 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/tcp_window_scaling It is just a temporary command for that session. Once you close the konsole window the effect goes away, and to get access again you must repeat the process. I use this quite often when I am using my laptop in various hotels, both on wireless and with a cable connection to allow me to gain access to the internet once I have connected to their router. I don't think that this is really the problem though or konqueror would be shut out as well. 3. Are you behind a proxy router? Perhaps you need to put in a proxy address. I can get konqueror, Opera, and IE6 to work with a proxy address in linux, but I have never been able to get Firefox or Thunderbird to work when I have input the proxy address.
