[opensuse] HP Printer C4380

Hi. I have an HP Photosmart C4380, that prints fine. It's a multifunction printer, ans as such it too can scan. But I'm not sure on how to set it up to do that. I have the HPLIP here. [opensuse] not seeing all scsi drives

Hello, This is odd. After every reboot of a new 10.2 install only one of the two scsi devices (Promise arrays) will appear in partioning. I wrote the guide Istavan refers to and I believe you are trying to implement. If you follow every steps exactly as written you should not have a problem with the installation. If you do please post the details and I hope I can help you. I tried many different solutions and this is the one that for me has worked the best. In general terms, installing rpm designed for the distro and version is the easy way to install. Installing rpms packages for other distros or even other versions of the OS is a prescription for problems not only with the program as well in other areas that you do not expect. Installing from source is very easy, it just take few more minutes because you have to be sure the dependencies are there. Again using yast or smart you can install some of the dependencies if you need it (in few cases they may not be available and you will have to installing from source). I am talking in general terms, yes, in some cases is a pain.... But that's not the case with efax. I can send you the rpm created by checkinstall but, they are not very robust and they are not make for distribution. The last couple of kernel upgrades have failed on my openSUSE machine, giving basically the same message as below. --- Subprocess failed. I'm trying to get hylafax up and running, I've dl'ed and installed the rpm, but when I go to run /usr/sbin/faxsetup, it errors out with: P-733:/home/Mike/DownLoads/jhylafax # /usr/sbin/faxsetup Setup program for HylaFAX (tm) 4.4.4. Created for i686-pc-linux-gnu on Mon Dec 24 14:49:25 UTC 2007. Found uuencode encoder: /usr/bin/uuencode Found base64 encoder: /usr/bin/base64 Found Quoted-Printable encoder: qp-encode Looks like /usr/bin/base64 supports base64 encoding. Found mimencode for compatibilty: mimencode Checking system for proper client configuration. Checking system for proper server configuration. [opensuse] Printer problem

This is the last unsolved problem on my system, as far as I am aware. After it goes, I expect to be a Happy Camper. As the efax-gtk problem seems well on the way to solution, I want to ask about a printer problem that surfaced a couple of weeks ago, after the printer had been installed for months, and had been working well all that time. The printer is Brother HL-1250. It is on the network, connected through a H-P 175x external print server. The problem is that when I send it a print job, the job gets to the printer, the printer comes out of its standby mode and warms up, and sheets of paper come feeding out, but the job is not properly printed. Instead, there is only a bit of printing at the top before the page is ejected, following which another page comes out with the same printing at the top, and this can go on forever, or until I turn the printer off. The printing at the top is like so: %!PS-Adobe-3.0 %%BoundingBox: 0 0 420 595 %%HiResBoundingBox: 0 0 419.55 595.25 (I have compressed this horizontally, in order to avoid breaking lines. Actually, each of the second and third segments begins only just below the ending of the segment above, so that it is all spread across the top of the page.) I do not know why it speaks of Adobe 3.0. I do not remember anything that has happened since related to the printer or to printing. I got the following message on my 11.0 version: openSUSE Updater: Unable to check for patches and updates because /usr/sbin/zypp-checkpatches-wrapper helper program is not set SUID root. This problem might be solved by setting the "File Permissions" in YaST "Local Security" tab to "easy" or by modifying /etc/permissions.local Is this a new feature of 11? [opensuse] turning off/on compiz fusion

Hi List, I have compiz fusion installed with emerald window manager, it's all realy fancy and good, but sometimes I really feel like having the standart desktop (window manager, probably?) So my question is is it possible to turn off compiz for a while without uninstalling. Now somehow when I restart the computer compiz won't start automatically (there are no titlebars on the windows) so I have to go and run compiz fuzion icon myself, and then everything is ok. So again, the main wish is would be able to turn off compiz fusion with one or more clicks, and come to the state where I had no compiz fusion installed and no gnome-xgl-config --disable-xgl... [opensuse] 10.3 Kernel problem with P5A-B motherboard.

I should be most grateful for advice on how to investigate this problem further. I have installed opensuse 10.3 on a P5A-B motherboard (Aladdin V chipset) with 512MB of SDRAM, Cyrix MII-300 processor. This runs slowly, with somewhat garbled graphics (ATI Radeon 7000) if I use X windows. Without X windows, in run level 3, the load average after booting (and after it has done various database things and settled) is about 0.50. Even if I start it with so-called safe mode and remove all loadable modules apart from those needed to drive the IDE interface the load average never falls below about 0.20. In the first case the CPU usage is about 60% idle and about 30% "si" (is this context switching?). In the second, CPU is about 95% idle, but the load average varies from 0.16 to 0.22. I assume some driver or high priority kernel process too fundamental to show up by "ps" is in a loop occupying processor time. Certainly the machine is even more sluggish than the hardware should warrant (and I am using older hardware in a router running SuSE 10.1 with load averages about .01 to .02). This is clearly too vague for a bug report, can anyone suggest how I can pin this down more, for instance find out where the CPU is spending most of its time?
